Linguistic intergroup bias: differential expectancies or in-group protection?

The linguistic intergroup bias describes the tendency to communicate positive in-group and negative out-group behaviors more abstractly than negative in-group and positive out-group behaviors. This article investigated whether this bias is driven by differential expectancies or by in-group protective motives. In Experiment 1, northern and southern Italian participants (N = 151) described positive and negative behaviors of northern or southern protagonists that were either congruent or incongruent with stereotypic expectancies. Regardless of valence, expectancy-congruent behaviors were describe

Interactions between peers with and without severe handicaps: dynamics of teacher intervention.

The impact of teachers' verbal interventions upon the dyadic social interactions between 40 elementary school children with severe mental retardation and their regular-education peers was investigated. All interactions occurred in the context of a structured program designed to facilitate social interactions. Half of the dyads were further instructed in specific cooperative play behavior. Students' and teachers' behaviors were coded. Results showed that the intervention initially positively affected various social play behavior; however, these effects diminished or reversed themselves as the i

Assessment of seasickness and its consequences by a method of peer evaluation.

A Seasickness Questionnaire, based on a peer-rating technique, was administered to 172 Israeli Navy sailors. Use of interrater agreement as a reliability index and two cutoff points for the partition of the sample resulted in the elimination of about one-third of the initial sampl and the formation of two subsamples-the "sick" (N equals 45) and "not sick" (N equals 73) sailors. By using differentially weighted scores for various intensities of seasickness, it was demonstrated that two normally confounded aspects of seasickness can be assessed independently: physical symptoms, which constitute

Effect of enhanced peer PrEP referral with HIV self-testing delivery among young Kenyan women: A randomized controlled trial of peer networks.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Africa experience high HIV acquisition risk and low engagement in prevention services. Knowledge of HIV-negative status paired with peer support might motivate AGYW-who are highly socially connected-to initiate HIV prevention services, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04982250) of AGYW peer networks in Central Kenya. Index peers aged 16-24 years who had used oral PrEP in the past 12 months were randomized 1:1 to: (1) enhanced peer referral:

Home-based peer social networks of young children with Down syndrome: a developmental perspective.

Numerous dimensions of the peer social networks of children with Down syndrome were examined within a developmental framework. Results revealed that for many key measures, particularly involvement in play, linkages to other settings, and control of play, children with Down syndrome have less well-developed peer networks even in comparison to a mental age matched group of typically developing children. This suggests both an absence of any social advantage in the peer context for children with Down syndrome and the existence of unusual difficulties that may be traced to underlying problems in pe

A mixed methods evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-led physical activity behaviour change intervention for inactive people living with and beyond cancer.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural physical activity (PA) interventions have shown success among people living with and beyond cancer (LWBC). Intervention delivery typically involves qualified exercise professionals (QEP); however, peer mentors (i.e. active people LWBC) may enhance such interventions as they can provide practical and emotional support from their lived experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-delivered PA behaviour change intervention for inactive people LWBC. METHODS: Inactive people LWBC participated in a 6-week intervention infor

Assessing the Transferability of Peer-Assisted Ultrasound Training for Medical Students: A Comparative Study Between Two Institutions in Germany and the UK.

Ultrasound (US) is a clinically important imaging modality that can also enhance medical students' understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. However, its integration into preclinical curricula often remains limited due to challenges such as resource constraints and instructor availability. To address these shortcomings, we implemented and evaluated a peer-assisted learning (PAL)-based US course-Summer School of Anatomy-based Sonography Heidelberg (SASH)-with a daughter course at a second institution, the University of Cambridge (Cam-SASH). Both programs focused on teaching fundament

Study on adolescents' smoking intentions: the influence of peer smoking and the mediating roles of beliefs and attitudes toward smoking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Reducing adolescents' smoking rates is an important priority for global public health. Smoking intention is the most direct factor influencing smoking behavior and the best predictor of its occurrence. Smoking intention is influenced by peer smoking behavior, which strengthens adolescents' willingness to smoke. Understanding adolescents' smoking intentions and their influencing factors will be a key component of future tobacco control. This study aims to explore the relationship between peer smoking and adolescents' future smoking intentions, investigate the potential roles of beli

Students as co-educators: Exploring peer-led digital tutorials to enhance clinical reasoning in undergraduate nursing education.

AIM: To discuss the potential of peer-led online tutorials using digital learning platforms as an educational innovation to enhance the application of the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC) in undergraduate nursing education. BACKGROUND: The CRC is widely integrated into nursing curricula to support safe and effective decision-making. However, many students find it challenging to apply the cycle effectively to case-based and reflective assessments. Literature indicates that peer-assisted learning (PAL) can enhance engagement, confidence and clinical skills in nursing education; however, limited r

Understanding the roles and experiences of mental health peer support workers in England: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support roles in mental health services are significantly increasing in the United Kingdom and internationally. However, there is wide variation in these roles and limited research exploring the ways in which Peer Support Workers (PSWs) are currently working. We aimed to explore: 1) the values underpinning the PSW role; 2) the distinctive features of the work that PSWs’ do; and 3) the perceived impact of the PSW role. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with paid mental health PSWs working across a range of settings. We took a co-produced, participator

The Women's Wellness with Type 2 Diabetes Programme: Feasibility of an online peer support and goal-setting intervention for midlife women.

OBJECTIVE: The Women's Wellness with Type 2 Diabetes Programme (WWDP) is a complex intervention, encouraging positive lifestyle behaviours to enhance wellness outcomes. A previous feasibility study found the original WWDP had a good effect signal and was acceptable to women but had challenges with national scalability. In response, the programme was revised (WWDP+). This study evaluated the feasibility of delivering the WWDP+ and its evaluation procedures and assessed physical and psychosocial outcomes in midlife women to inform the design of a future randomised controlled trial. METHODS: A s

Understanding Family-Peer Linkages: The Interplay Among Family Emotional Expressiveness, Social Skills, and Friendship Quality From Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Family emotional expressiveness (FEE) is an important manifestation of parental emotion socialization that influences children's socioemotional development. However, previous research examining FEE and social skills from the perspective of parental emotion socialization has primarily focused on socioemotional skills and has simply treated FEE as a global construct. More importantly, whether parental emotion socialization can spill over to other social systems (e.g., friendship) and form a reciprocal association with them remains unknown. METHODS: Using data from 901 children (Ma

Perceived maternal disapproval of peer affiliates forecasts child friendship dissolution.

Parents who express disapproval of their children's friends presumably do so to disrupt the affiliation. This study examines the efficacy of this practice. Participants included 394 students (200 boys, 194 girls) attending public schools in Lithuania (ages 9-14). Nearly all were ethnic Lithuanian. Three times, across 2 school years, participants completed surveys describing perceptions of friendship social support and maternal disapproval of peer affiliates. Stable reciprocated best friends (N = 197) were identified from friend nominations during the Fall and Winter of the initial school year

Culturally mediated recovery: A cross-perspective qualitative study of psychosocial treatment for drug dependence in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial treatment is central to recovery from drug dependence, yet most evidence comes from Western contexts emphasizing autonomy, family involvement, spirituality, and peer support. In South Korea, recovery unfolds within distinct legal and relational structures, suggesting a culturally mediated treatment process. This study examined how Korean therapists and patients experience psychosocial treatment for drug dependence. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 participants (13 therapists, 9 patients) from addiction hospitals and recovery facilities. Data

Parents Use Online Communities to Seek Guidance on Child Substance Use, Parental Use, and Family Substance Use Challenges: A Content Analysis of Reddit Posts.

OBJECTIVE: Parents play a role in shaping their children's beliefs and behaviors around substance use. When faced with unfamiliar or challenging situations, many parents turn to peers for advice. This study characterized the substance use-related advice parents sought from peers in an online parenting forum. METHOD: We conducted a content analysis of substance use-related posts from the r/parenting subreddit. Among the advice-seeking posts included in this study (n = 156), thematic coding assessed the presence (yes/no) of seven themes: (1) general communication with children about alcohol and

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), remains a public health concern in China. Health education is a fundamental intervention for its control. Even in transmission-interrupted areas like Wuhan, sustained awareness is crucial. However, recent literature on school-based interventions evaluating knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among children in such areas is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of peer-led education versus routine health education in improving schistosomiasis-related KAP among elementary students in a
