Psychological and neuropsychological assessment of regular hoasca users.

BACKGROUND: Hoasca (also called ayahuasca) is a N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) - containing psychedelic brew originally used for magico-religious purposes by Amerindian populations of the Amazon Basin. Recently, Brazilian syncretic churches have helped spread the ritual use of hoasca to Western societies. The aim of this study was to evaluate substance use, and neuropsychological and psychological functioning of regular hoasca users within a religious setting. METHODS: Assessment of socio-economic status, mood, personality traits, impulsiveness, drug use, quality of life, extrinsic and intrinsi

Does Personality Predict Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia? Results from PACO Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Premorbid personality could play a role in the onset of behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPS) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but prospective studies are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed at prospectively assessing the influence of premorbid personality traits on BPS evolution in a population of patients with prodromal or mild AD. METHODS: We used a multicenter prospective cohort study of 237 patients followed-up for 18 months. The influence of personality traits on BPS evolution, measured with Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), was assessed using linear mixed-effect m

What makes people anxious about pain? How personality and perception combine to determine pain anxiety responses in clinical and non-clinical populations.

Although anxiety has both dispositional and situational determinants, little is known about how individuals' anxiety-related sensitivities and their expectations about stressful events actually combine to determine anxiety. This research used Information Integration Theory and Functional Measurement to assess how participants' physical concerns sensitivity (PCS) and event expectancy are cognitively integrated to determine their anxiety about physical pain. Two studies were conducted - one with university students and other with anxiety clinic patients - in which participants were presented wit

Histrionic disorder among Iranian high school and college students.

This study was designed to explore the sex and group differences in histrionic personalities of high school and university students, and also to explore the results of this study with those of Crown and Crisp from 1966 in England. A sample of 160 high school students (80 girls and 80 boys) were selected randomly from four high schools in Shiraz and Shiraz University. The mean ages for high school girls and boys were 15.3 and 17.3 yr., for university women and men were 20.6 and 23.2 yr., respectively. The hysteria (H) scale of the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire was used. The questions of this

Personality change after severe head injury.

Personality change is widely reported after head injury, but rarely investigated quantitatively. This Paper summarises recent quantitative studies concerned with the natural history of personality change after severe head injury; its nature; its prediction; and its consequences. Reports of personality change increase with increasing time after injury, and the changes reflect a variety of phenomena including changes in affect, behaviour, maturity, and responsibility. Although there is a relationship between injury severity and personality change, other features such as premorbid personality and

Psychopathy: traditional and clinical antisocial concepts.

Advances in our knowledge about the concept of psychopathy and the repeated occurrence of antisocial behaviors in the face of adversity and punishment have been limited by a complex interplay of conceptual and methodological issues that have not yet been addressed adequately by psychosocial scientists. Foremost among the problems facing clinicians and researchers interested in this topic is the lack of agreement on the meaning and labelling of the construct. Scholars have not reached consensus in describing a category within a diagnostic system that distinguishes a relatively homogeneous group

[Experimental and psychopathological characteristics of psychophysical infantilism in the structure of the hysterical form of psychopathy].

The authors report of some results of an experimentalpathopsychological study of 100 patients with hysterical forms of psychopathy and the syndrome of psychophysical infantilism. It was demonstrated that there is an irregular intellectual development (according to Wecksler's method) which is described by the authors in the form of a characteristic "intellectual profile" and a high level of claims with inadequate reactions of selection, a high assessment of physical and psychic "I", with a low evaluation of the "situational I". The achieved personality characteristics are closely connected with

[Psychiatric manifestations in children with speech disorders with and without minimal brain dysfunction].

Several studies have shown not only that children with psychiatric problems are having more speech and language disorders than control groups. Moreover it has been shown that other developmental disorders are more common in groups with speech and language disorders. In a study in Munich including all children with diagnosis of specific developmental disorders of speech and language seen in our outpatient department from 1981 to 1986 we found significantly more psychiatric diagnoses in a subgroup of children with MBD. This was proved for the boys only however not for the smaller group of girls.

[Cognitive mental processes and personality characteristics of socially unadjusted students].

Examination of 42 first-year students from the Pomor State University in Arkhangelsk has shown that 61.91% of them had obvious signs of social disadaptation and high reactive and personality anxiety and 38.09% had no social disadaptation with low and moderate anxiety. Examination was performed in the intersession period. Students with phenomena of social disadaptation displayed reduced functioning of basic cognitive mental processes: memory, thinking, attention. The individual properties predisposing to disadaptation were as follows: instability of central nervous system performance and the pe

The relationship between panic disorder/agoraphobia and personality disorders.

This selective review of the relationship between panic disorder/agoraphobia and DSM-III personality disorders points to a preponderance of dependent, avoidant, and histrionic features and reveals a certain degree of covariation between severity of Axis I disorder and personality functioning. However, the link between panic/agoraphobia and Axis II disorders does not appear to be specific because (1) general features such as neuroticism, stress, dysphoric mood, and interpersonal sensitivity, rather than duration and severity of panic attacks and phobias, emerge as unique predictors or determina

Personality types of women attending an STD clinic: correlation with keeping first review appointments.

One hundred and eighty new women patients attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic answered the Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ) which measures psychoticism, extraversion, neuroticism, and a tendency to "fake good". These personality scores were correlated with the patients' attendance or non-attendance for their first review appointments. The results showed that the mean psychoticism scale scores of the 41 non-attenders was significantly higher than that of the 139 who kept their first appointment. This relation was confirmed using point biserial correlations. The mean sco

Psychopathy, aggression, and family history in male veteran substance abuse patients: a factor analytic study.

Forty-one male patients consecutively admitted to an inpatient VA substance abuse program completed the Psychopathic States Inventory, the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, and the WAIS. Multiple significant intercorrelations between scale scores were noted, prompting a factor analysis to identify constructs to explain these correlations. Four orthogonal factors were isolated: Factor I--impulsivity/narcissism/sociopathy; Factor II--assaultive aggression; Factor III--irritative aggression; Factor IV--IQ. Patient factor scores were distributed independent from family history of alcohol or other s

A controlled study of type A behavior and psychophysiologic responses to stress in anorexia nervosa.

Adolescents and young adults meeting DSM-III criteria for anorexia nervosa (n = 13) and atypical eating disorders (n = 7) were compared with weight-recovered anorectics (n = 6) and normal weight controls (n = 11) using a type-A structured interview and a computerized stress procedure. Heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiographic changes were monitored. Anorexia nervosa subjects demonstrated significantly more type-A characteristics than controls. The emaciated and weight-recovered anorectics had elevated hostility scores on the type-A interview, which has been shown in recent studies o

Type A behaviour and other psychological factors in peptic ulcer disease.

A variety of personality traits and psychological symptom states have been reported to be associated with peptic ulcer disease. In the present study, male patients with confirmed duodenal or gastric ulcer(s) are compared with patient and non-patient control groups in terms of Type A behaviour, the Eysenck personality dimensions, hostility, state and trait anxiety, and depression. By comparison with cardiac patients, the peptic ulcer groups obtained lower Type A scores but were similar on the other variables. By comparison with age and sex matched community controls. GU patients obtained higher

Type A behavior in married couples in a family practice population.

Type A behavior is characterized by status insecurity, hyperaggressiveness, free-floating hostility, time urgency, and self-destructive tendencies. In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 72 married couples from a family practice residency patient population completed self-administered questionnaires assessing the relationship between behavior type and perceived stress, social support, health perceptions, psychosomatic symptoms, health habits, marital discord, and family function. Type A men slept less, had more headaches, and reported more job stress than type B men. Type A women tended to

Clinical Subgroups of Individuals Receiving Care in a Forensic Hospital: A 20-Year Comparison and Treatment Need Implications.

This study examines whether clinical need subgroups in forensic care have evolved over 20 years and explores differences in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and assaultive behaviors across groups. This retrospective observational study used data from a hospital for men; Sample 1 (S1, N = 97) collected in 1990, and Sample 2 (S2, N = 176) in 2009-2012. A data-driven multiple correspondence analysis and a cluster analysis was conducted on S1 based on clinical needs, then applied to S2. ACEs and assault proportions within each cluster were compared using chi-square tests. Clusters identified:

Enduring Effects of One-Day Training in Good Psychiatric Management on Clinician Attitudes About Borderline Personality Disorder.

Time-limited interventions may attenuate stigma and negative beliefs about borderline personality disorder (BPD) among mental health clinicians. This study examined whether a 1-day training in good psychiatric management (GPM) changed clinician attitudes and beliefs and whether those changes persisted over time. Fifty-two mental health clinicians attended a 1-day GPM training and completed a 13-item assessment of attitudes about BPD before and after the training and again 6 months later. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variances and dependent sample t-tests demonstrated significant chang
