Wilson disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the accumulation of copper in the body due to a defect of biliary copper excretion. Alloxan is known to induce diabetes in experimental animals through destruction of insulin-producing 3-cells of pancreas. The mechanism of DNA damage induced by alloxan was investigated using 32P-labeled human DNA fragments. Cu(II)-dependent DNA damage increased with the concentration of alloxan and NADH.
