Effects of a pyrethroid pesticide on endocrine responses to female odours and reproductive behaviour in male parr of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.).

Reproductive behaviour of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) from an anadromous stock was studied in a large stream water aquarium. Four adult ma … than control males after exposure to ovarian fluid and urine (known to contain reproductive priming pheromones). When ethanol-exposed males were exposed to ovarian fluid and urine they had significantly higher plasma levels of 17,20beta-P compared to those exposed to water only.

Secretory proteins as potential semiochemical carriers in the horse.

Two soluble proteins were isolated as major secretory products of horse sweat and of the parotid gland and characterized for structural and functional properties. The first protein, lipocalin allergen EquC1, was characterized for its glycosylation sites and bound glycosidic moieties. Only one (Asn53) of the two putative glycosylation sites within the sequence was post-translationally modified; a different glycosylation pattern was determined with respect to data previously reported. When purified from horse sweat, this protein contained oleamide and other organic molecules as natural ligands.

Cell-surface redox regulation coordinates chemotropism and hyphal fusion for root colonization in a vascular wilt pathogen.

Soilborne fungal pathogens must locate host roots, stably attach to their surface and assemble a persistent mycelial network before invading the plant, yet how host perception is coupled to these cellular outputs remains poorly understood. Here, we characterize HAM-7, a GPI-anchored cell wall protein of Fusarium oxysporum and orthologue of the Neurospora crassa cell wall integrity sensor, and show that it is required for two mechanistically distinct processes essential for root colonization. Targeted deletion of ham-7 strongly impaired stable mycelial retention on tomato roots while leaving ge

Metagenomic insights into regional gut microbiota variation of invasive Spodoptera frugiperda across the Gaoligong Mountains.

BACKGROUND: The invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda poses a potential threat to the ecological security of western Yunnan, using the Gaoligong Mountains as an important cross-border corridor and overwintering site. However, the potential role of gut microbiota in the local adaptation of S. frugiperda during its invasion remains poorly understood. METHODS: Adult populations were monitored using sex pheromone traps, and metagenomic sequencing was performed on larval gut microbiota from different regions of the Gaoligong Mountains. The gut microbial composition and functional potential were anal

Cosmopolites sordidus G. as a dispersal agent of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc TR4) in Cavendish banana crops (Musa AAA).

Cosmopolites sordidus Germar is the most limiting insect pest in the production of musaceous crops. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the population density of C. sordidus and the incidence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc TR4) in Cavendish banana plantations with high, medium, and low disease incidence in La Guajira, Colombia. The farm's weekly phytosanitary records from 2022 to 2023 defined the incidence levels as follows: high (>80 foci), medium (>30-80 foci), and low (<30 foci). For each incidence level, we installed ten ramp-type

Liver metabolomic profiles of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) are influenced by sex and maturation stages.

INTRODUCTION: Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a unique vertebrate model to examine how liver metabolomes support different reproductive functions. Juvenile sea lamprey prey on other fish species by attaching to their body and feeding on their blood and body fluids. Once reaching adulthood, they cease feeding, migrate to spawning streams and begin their final sexual maturation. During these processes, the male livers produce large quantities of bile acid pheromone precursors to be modified and released via gills, whereas the female livers synthesize vast amounts of vitellogenin (yolk lipoph

Enterococcus faecalis hijacks FABP2 to activate quorum-sensing signals and aggravate Crohn's disease by inducing gut dysbiosis.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterised by intestinal dysbiosis. While inflammation-induced leakage of host proteins is a known phenomenon in CD, how these proteins affect the gut microbiota and contribute to dysbiosis remains unclear. One hypothesis is that commensal bacteria hijack these proteins, exacerbating inflammation in CD. DESIGN: To investigate host-microbiota interactions in CD, we measured fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2) levels in patients with CD and in mouse models of dextran sulfate sodium induced enteritis and interleukin 10 knock

Repellent effect of oregano essential oil and carvacrol analogs against imported fire ants.

BACKGROUND: Imported fire ants are highly destructive invasive pests that damage agriculture and ecosystems. Their control largely depends on synthetic pesticides, which raise concerns about environmental contamination and resistance. This highlights the need for natural product-based alternatives. RESULTS: Oregano essential oil from Origanum vulgare exhibited potent repellency against red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) and hybrid imported fire ants (S. invicta × S. richteri), with a minimum repellent effective dose (MRED) of 15.6 and 7.8 μg g-1, respectively. Efficacy of a Self-Vaccination Strategy for Influenza A Virus, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, and Lawsonia intracellularis in Swine.

Background/Objectives: Environmental enrichment (EE) devices are required in various countries and markets to promote animal welfare, with dual-purpose devices more likely to encourage adoption. We developed an EE device that allows pigs to self-administer liquids, designed to align with natural and play behaviors, and utilized a maternal pheromone (MP) to attract pigs to the device. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of this device in delivering vaccines for Erysipelas, Ileitis, Mycoplasma, and Influenza to growing pigs. Methods: Pigs were assigned to three treatments groups: Control (

Identification and characterisation of PRXamide peptides in the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis.

Insect CAPA-PVK (periviscerokinin) and pyrokinin (PK) neuropeptides belong to the PRX family peptides and are produced from capa and pyrokinin genes. We identified and characterised the two genes from the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. The capa gene transcribes three splice variants, capa-a, -b, and -c, encoding two CAPA-PVKs (EVQGLFPFPRVamide; QGLIPFPRVamide) and two PKs (ASWMPSSSPRLamide; DSASFTPRLamide). The pyrokinin mRNA encodes three PKs: DLVTQVLQPGQTGMWFGPRLamide, SEGNLVNFTPRLamide, and ESGEQPEDLEGSMGGAATSRQLRTDSEPTWGFSPRLamide, the most extended pheromone biosynthes

Proteomic analysis of the mouse sperm acrosome - towards an understanding of an organelle with diverse functionality.

The acrosome located within the mammalian sperm head is essential for successful fertilization, as it enables the sperm to penetrate the extracellular layers of the oocyte and fuse with oolemma. However, the mammalian acrosomal vesicle is no longer considered to contain only hydrolytic enzymes. Using label-free nano-scale liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-MS/MS) proteomics, we identified a total of 885 proteins in the acrosome isolated from spermatozoa obtained from cauda epididymis of free-living house mice Mus musculus musculus contains a total of 885 proteins. Ste24: An Integral Membrane Protein Zinc Metalloprotease with Provocative Structure and Emergent Biology.

Ste24, an integral membrane protein zinc metalloprotease, is found in every kingdom of eukaryotes. It was discovered approximately 20 years ago by yeast genetic screens identifying it as a factor responsible for processing the yeast mating a-factor pheromone. In animals, Ste24 processes prelamin A, a component of the nuclear lamina; mutations in the human ortholog of Ste24 diminish its activity, giving rise to genetic diseases of accelerated aging (progerias). Additionally, lipodystrophy, acquired from the standard highly active antiretroviral therapy used to treat AIDS patients, likely result

Bumble Bee Workers Give Up Sleep to Care for Offspring that Are Not Their Own.

Sleep is ubiquitous in vertebrates and invertebrates, and its loss is typically associated with reduced performance, health, or survival, for reasons that are yet unclear [1-3]. Nevertheless, some animals can reduce sleep for increasing foraging time [4], under predation risk [5-8], during seasonal migration [9-11], or for having greater mating opportunities [12, 13]. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) workers give up sleep for improving brood care. We combined video recordings, detailed behavioral analyses, sleep-deprivation experiments, and response-thr

Application of ethnobotanical repellents and acaricides in prevention, control and management of livestock ticks: A review.

Ticks transmit at least the same number or even more pathogens than any other group of blood-feeding arthropods worldwide affecting humans and animals. The eco-friendly control and management of tick vectors in a constantly changing environment is a crucial challenge. Besides the development of vaccines against ticks, IPM practices aimed at reducing tick interactions with livestock, emerging pheromone-based control tools, and few biological control agents, the extensive employment of acaricides and tick repellents still remain the most effective and ready-to-use strategies. However, the former

Vomeronasal organ lesion disrupts social odor recognition, behaviors and fitness in golden hamsters.

Most studies support the viewpoint that the vomeronasal organ has a profound effect on conspecific odor recognition, scent marking and mating behavior in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). However, the role of the vomeronasal organ in social odor recognition, social interaction and fitness is not well understood. Therefore, we conducted a series of behavioral and physiological tests to examine the referred points in golden hamster. We found that male hamsters with vomeronasal organ lesion showed no preference between a predator odor (the anal gland secretion of the Siberian weasels (Mu

Transfer of [³H]estradiol-17β and [³H]progesterone from conspecifics to cohabiting female mice.

Estradiol-17β (E₂) and progesterone (P₄) play critical roles in female reproductive physiology and behavior. Given the sensitivity of females to exogenous sources of these steroids, we examined the presence of E₂ and P₄ in conspecifics' excretions and the transfer of excreted steroids between conspecifics. We paired individual adult female mice with a stimulus male or female conspecific given daily injections of [³H]E₂ or [³H]P₄. Following 48  h of direct interaction with the stimulus animal, we measured radioactivity in the uterus, ovaries, muscle, olfactory bulbs, mesencephalon and diencepha

Efficacy of verbenone for protecting ponderosa pine stands from western pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) attack in California.

The western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a major cause of ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., mortality in much of western North America. Currently, techniques for managing D. brevicomis infestations are limited. Verbenone (4,6,6-trimethylbicyclo [3.1.1] hept-3-en-2-one) is an antiaggregation pheromone of several Dendroctonus spp., including D. brevicomis, and it has been registered as a biopesticide for control of mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, and southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm

Activation of family C G-protein-coupled receptors by the tripeptide glutathione.

The Family C G-protein-coupled receptors include the metabotropic glutamate receptors, the gamma-aminobutyric acid, type B (GABAB) receptor, the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), which participates in the regulation of calcium homeostasis in the body, and a diverse group of sensory receptors that encompass the amino acid-activated fish 5.24 chemosensory receptor, the mammalian T1R taste receptors, and the V2R pheromone receptors. A common feature of Family C receptors is the presence of an amino acid binding site. In this study, a preliminary in silico analysis of the size and shape of the amin

Antennal expressed genes of the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti L.); characterization of odorant-binding protein 10 and takeout.

A small cDNA library was constructed from antennae of 100 adult male Aedes aegypti yellow fever mosquitoes. Sequencing of 80 clones identified 49 unique gene products, including a member of the Odorant Binding Protein family (Aaeg-OBP10), a homologue of Takeout (Aaeg-TO), and transposable elements of the LINE, SINE and MITE classes. Aaeg-OBP10 encodes a 140 amino acid protein including a predicted 25 amino acid signal peptide. Aaeg-OBP10 expression was adult male enriched, increased with adult age, and greatest in antennae and wings but also present in maxillary palps, proboscis and leg. Aaeg-
