Effects of speed, agility and quickness training programme on cognitive and physical performance in preadolescent soccer players.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of a short-term (4 weeks) non-soccer-specific training programme based on speed, agility and quickness (SAQ) and a soccer-specific training programme based on small-sided games (SSG) on cognitive and physical performance in preadolescent soccer players. Twenty-one participants were randomly assigned to SAQ group (n = 11) or SSG group (n = 10). They were tested pre and post interventions on physical (5 m sprint, 20 m sprint and sprint with turns of 90°) and cognitive (inhibitory control by means of the Flanker task and perceptual speed

Variation in salivary cortisol responses in yearling Thoroughbred racehorses during their first year of training.

Thoroughbred horses are bred for competitive racing and undergo intense training regimes. The maintenance of physical soundness and desirable behavioural characteristics are critical to the longevity of a racing career. Horses intended for Flat racing generally enter training as yearlings and undergo introductory training prior to exercise conditioning for racing. This period requires rapid adjustment to a novel environment. As a prey animal, a horse's 'fight-or-flight' response is highly adapted, in which a well-understood component of this response, the hypothalamic-pituitary-axis, is activa

Inter- and Intra-Rater Reliabilities of the Army Combat Fitness Test Three-Repetition Maximum Deadlift Event Among Raters of Varying Professional Experience.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Army is updating the physical fitness assessment for soldiers to the six-event Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). A paucity of data regarding the ACFT maximum deadlift (MDL) event, especially in military populations, has increased concern over the objectivity of the test. The reliability of scoring the MDL has not been established. It is unknown if grader professional experience impacts the reliability of scoring, and if so, what level of experience is required for reliable assessment. Performance and assessment of the MDL could impact military occupational selection, prom

Post-traumatic Nerve Issues Around the Elbow.

Nerve injury about the elbow is a commonly reported problem after upper extremity trauma and surgery. Understanding the complete workup and management of these injuries is crucial in preserving upper extremity function and ensuring high-grade nerve injuries are diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. Assessment begins with a thorough history and physical examination, along with required imaging to evaluate bony or vascular injury as needed. Patients with neurological deficits in the surgical field of bony fixation or evidence of high-grade nerve injury on imaging may be candidates for early …

Neurologic analysis of face pain.

Analysis of face pain is predicated on knowledge of the structures of the face, head, and neck that may generate this sensation. Of particular importance in this process are historical data; characteristics of the pain, as elicited in history taking, should lead to the definition of recognized syndromes that may threaten a patient's survival or function and for which appropriate intervention may bring relief. Among these syndromes are trigeminal neuralgia and neuropathy, cluster headache, cranial arteritis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and psychogenic face pain.

Commentary: evaluation of driver fitness--the role of continuing medical education.

Faced with demographic trends that predicted large increases of older drivers within a relatively short period combined with the realization that screening for driver fitness was largely dependent upon health professionals, principally physicians, in 2004 the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) initiated measures that sought to achieve better cooperation with the health professionals performing the screening. A program was initiated that sought to improve the health professionals' understanding of road safety considerations. This article examines the measures included in this pr

The Role of Positional Release Therapy in Treating Recalcitrant Brachial Plexus Neuritis: A Case Report.

A 17-year-old female soccer player presented with severe right shoulder pain and scapular winging due to brachial plexus neuritis. The patient was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner syndrome, a rare condition often resistant to traditional physical therapy, which typically persists for 6 months to years, at times requiring surgical intervention. Over the course of 6 weeks, the patient received positional release therapy once a week coupled with electrical modalities, massage, and a daily home exercise program. This case report is unique because we believe we were the first to use positional relea

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Summary of Clinical Practice Guideline Recommendations-Using the Evidence to Guide Physical Therapist Practice.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common upper extremity nerve compression syndrome. Patients with CTS experience reduced sensation, dexterity, and function. Irreversible changes in nerve structure and function due to demyelination and axonal damage can occur in long-standing cases. Published in the May 2019 issue of JOSPT, clinical practice guidelines for CTS summarize the best available evidence on incidence and prevalence, pathophysiology, classification, risk factors, examination techniques, and interventions. These guidelines provide practical recommendations for physical therapy e
