Evaluation of pityriasis versicolor in prisoners: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a mild but recurrent superficial fungal infection of stratum corneum. Many predisposing factors such as late teen and young adulthood age, tropical and subtropical climate (and to a lesser extent temperate climate), immunosuppression, malnutrition, use of oral contraceptives, hyperhidrosis, poor hygiene and a few other factors have been proposed for this condition. AIM: Regarding these probable and possible risk factors, we felt that jail is a unique population which can be affected by this infection and therefore we decided to evaluate some aspects o…

Study of role of streptococcal throat infection in pityriasis rosea.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rosea is a common, acute exanthem of uncertain etiology. The exact cause of pityriasis rosea is not known but various hypotheses have been postulated incriminating infective agents such as viruses, bacteria, spirochete and noninfective etiologies such as atopy and autoimmune causes have also been investigated. AIM: We undertook a study to investigate the role of Streptococcus haemolyticus in the causation of pityriasis rosea and study the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and ASLO titer in patients with pityriasis rosea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 20 pa…

Pityriasis lichenoides and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in a young girl.

Pityriasis lichenoides is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by erythematous, desquamative papules and plaques. An acute form, pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta, and a chronic form, pityriasis lichenoides chronica, represent the two ends of the spectrum of this disorder. Most commonly seen in children and young adults, its etiology is unknown. We describe a young patient with concurrent pityriasis lichenoides and idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, a previously unreported association.

Extracorporeal photochemotherapy for the treatment of exanthematic pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare papulosquamous skin disease of unknown aetiology that has been categorized into five clinical types based on age at onset, cutaneous features and prognosis. We present a patient with chronic exanthematic type II atypical adult PRP, whose skin status was significantly improved with monthly extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP). Various therapeutic regimens including narrow-band UV-B, bath PUVA therapy, systemic fumaric acid esters and systemic cyclosporin had failed. Oral retinoids could not be administered due to a type IIa hyperlipoproteinemia with pr…

Differentiation and clonality of lesional lymphocytes in pityriasis lichenoides chronica.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) and pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) are benign T-cell diseases that share several overlapping clinicopathologic features, leading many to believe that they exist as a spectrum rather than as single entities. Previous molecular studies have shown that PLEVA is a clonal lymphoproliferative disorder. To further characterize the immunohistologic features of PLC and to determine whether PLC demonstrates clonality, we studied 6 cases of PLC using a frozen section-immunoperoxidase technique and polymerase chain reaction/denaturin…

[Pityriasis versicolor in children: a retrospective study of 164 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial mycosis uncommonly reported in children. It occurs frequently in warm humid climates. Clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by mycology examination of a biopsy sample or a patch-test. The aim of our work was to assess the frequency of pityriasis versicolor in children in our region and ascertain the contribution of the cutaneous patch test and its diagnostic specificity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in patients meeting the following inclusion criteria over a 5-year period: age < 14 years, clinical presentation …

Pityriasis rubra pilaris as the initial manifestation of internal neoplasia.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare papulosquamous disorder of unknown aetiology. There are only three cases reported occurring coincident with internal neoplasia. We report a case of this disorder presenting as the initial manifestation of a previously undiagnosed malignancy with metastases in the liver. The primary tumour was not detected. The patient had a complete remission of his PRP with topical steroids alone, but died of the malignancy.

Pityriasis rotunda: report of a familial occurrence and review of the literature.

Pityriasis rotunda is an uncommon dermatosis characterized by multiple, widely distributed, strikingly circular hypopigmented or hyperpigmented patches that are slightly scaly. It has been described in Oriental and black patients, usually in association with certain infective or malignant systemic diseases. Pityriasis rotunda is rare in white patients and does not act as a marker of malignancy. Our ultrastructural and histologic findings demonstrated that pityriasis rotunda is more closely related to congenital ichthyoses than ichthyosis vulgaris, contrary to previous reports. On the basis of …

An epidemiological study of pityriasis rosea in Middle Road Hospital.

Pityriasis rosea is a common skin disorder seen in dermatological practices. A one year prospective study on pityriasis rosea was carried out in Middle Road Hospital, Singapore. A total of 214 patients were studied. The incidence rates by age, sex and month were analysed. The peak incidence was in the 20-24 age group. There was a male predominance. More patients with pityriasis rosea were seen in the months of March, April and November. The clinical features in our patients concur with other studies. Blood for VDRL was done on 170 patients. Two had a biological false positive test. Total white…

Pityriasis rotunda in a Caucasian woman from the Mediterranean area.

Pityriasis rotunda (PR) has been known to affect, almost exclusively, Japanese and South African Bantu, often in association with various systemic diseases. However, the occurrence of PR in Caucasian patients is extremely rare, and has been previously described in only three reports. We hereby report a case of an apparently healthy Caucasian woman from Israel having clinical and histological features characteristic of PR. Pityriasis rotunda (PR) is a rare disorder of keratinization characterized by strikingly well demarcated, perfectly round scaly brownish patches of variable number and diamet…

Relationship of pityriasis amiantacea to psoriasis. A follow-up study.

46 patients with pityriasis aminantacea have been reexamined with regard to the later development of psoriasis and atopic diseases, and their occurrence in first and second degree relatives. HLA antigens of the A, B and C series were also determined. Earlier suggestions of a close association with psoriasis were not confirmed. An association with atopic diseases could not be established. Occurrence of seborrheic dermatitis seems, however, common in patients with pityriasis amiantacea.

Predisposing factors on the surface of the skin in persons with pityriasis versicolor.

This is a report on biochemical and physiological examinations carried out on 20 test persons who in the last 2 years had contacted and completely recovered from pityriasis versicolor and on 25 control persons of corresponding age and sex. The tests on the skin surface of the patients with pityriasis versicolor show, when compared with the corresponding control group, the following significant results: 1. Significantly more amino acids could be extracted from the skin of the pityriasis versicolor patients than from the skin of the control persons. 2. A significantly shorter alkali neutralisati…
