Effect of growth hormone treatment on adult height in peripubertal children with idiopathic short stature: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

GH is often used to treat children with idiopathic short stature despite the lack of definitive, long-term studies of efficacy. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine the effect of GH on adult height in peripubertal children. Subjects (n = 68; 53 males and 15 females), 9-16 yr old, with marked, idiopathic short stature [height or predicted height < or = -2.5 sd score (SDS)] received either GH (0.074 mg/kg) or placebo sc three times per week until they were near adult height. At study termination, adult height measurements were available for 33 patients a

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of subcutaneous administration of GM-CSF as a vaccine adjuvant: effect on cellular and humoral immune responses.

Thirty healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either a single subcutaneous injection of GM-CSF or placebo at the time of vaccination with tetanus and diptheria toxoid (Td), influenza and hepatitis A vaccines. Humoral response was measured by weekly serum samples assayed for antibodies to tetanus toxoid (TT), influenza and hepatitis A; while cellular response to TT was determined by measuring IL-2 expression in T-cells following in vitro exposure to TT antigen using a flow cytometric assay. It was hypothesized that (1). GM-CSF would augment immune response and (2). that the freque

The natural course of acute sciatica with nerve root symptoms in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial evaluating the effect of piroxicam.

To study the natural history of acute sciatica, 208 patients with obvious symptoms and signs of a lumbar radiculopathy (L5 and S1) were examined within 14 days of onset. A concomitant double-blind investigation of the effect of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam was performed. The results measured by visual analog scale and Roland's functional tests showed a satisfactory improvement throughout the 4 weeks of observation. The piroxicam-treated group had same results as the control group. Based on questionnaires at months 3 and 12 approximately 30% of the patients still complained

Effects of doxycycline on intrusive experimental trauma memory: a pre-registered, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

A core clinical feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is recurrent reexperiencing of the traumatic event in the form of intrusive memories. Doxycycline is a matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) inhibitor. MMP-9 is required for late-phase, NMDA receptor-dependent long-term potentiation in the hippocampus and the basal and central amygdala nuclei, which are important to various forms of learning and memory. Here we examined the effect of doxycycline on the development of intrusive memories in a pre-registered randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial ( https://osf.io/72ys9 ). He

Effects of monoglucosyl hesperidin on human lymphatic circulatory function: A randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial.

Monoglucosyl hesperidin promotes nitric oxide production in vascular endothelial cells and contributes to blood flow improvement and edema reduction. While preclinical studies in animal subjects have also suggested a role in promoting lymphatic drainage, its effect on human lymphatic function remains unexplored. Here, we examined the effect of monoglucosyl hesperidin intake (300 mg/day) on the lymphatic system in a controlled trial in healthy human adults (n = 30). Thoracic duct diameter was assessed by high-frequency ultrasonography as a surrogate marker of central lymphatic flow. While no ef
