Amniocele associated with placental abruption: a case report.

Amniocele is a rare condition involving herniation of the amniotic sac through a uterine breach. Our case is of a 29-year-old pregnant woman at 31 weeks of pregnancy who presented to the maternity triage of the Mirebalais Teaching Hospital for abdominal pain and the passage of blood through the vagina. After an ultrasonographic evaluation, the diagnosis of amniocele was made. In practice, for a third-trimester, nonlaboring pregnant woman with this symptomatology, the most common diagnoses that come to mind are placenta previa and placental abruption. This case highlights that a diagnosis of si

A review of feto-placental vasculature flow modelling.

The placenta provides the vital nutrients and removal of waste products required for fetal growth and development. Understanding and quantifying the differences in structure and function between a normally functioning placenta compared to an abnormal placenta is vital to provide insights into the aetiology and treatment options for fetal growth restriction and other placental disorders. Computational modelling of blood flow in the placenta allows a new understanding of the placental circulation to be obtained. This structured review discusses multiple recent methods for placental vascular mode

Placental dysfunction in obese women and antenatal surveillance.

Obesity is a significant health concern worldwide and is associated with numerous health complications, including placental dysfunction during pregnancy. Placental dysfunction can lead to adverse outcomes for both the mother and the foetus, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and foetal growth restriction. Studies have shown that maternal obesity can lead to placental dysfunction through various mechanisms, including chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and dysregulation of metabolic pathways. These factors can contribute to changes in the placenta's structure and fun

Placental Listeriosis: Case Report and Literature Review.

Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne, facultative, intracellular gram-positive bacillus, is one of 17 species of the Listeria genus and was responsible for the world's largest outbreak of listeriosis in 2017-2018 in South Africa. Listeria monocytogenes tends to cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms in healthy individuals. However, pregnancy-associated listeriosis can be fatal to the fetus and can lead to serious adverse effects in the neonate. Listeria monocytogenes has an affinity for the placenta, as opposed to other nonreproductive organs. Herein, we present a case of placental listeriosis di

Placental Cyclophilin A Expression in Pregnancies Complicated with Hypertension.

Introduction: Cyclophilin A was reported to be increased in the serum of mothers with preeclampsia, and is implicated in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to determine the expression of cyclophilin A in the placenta of mothers with and without hypertension, and to correlate its expression with maternal complications and adverse perinatal outcomes. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of a total of 70 cases (35 cases of mothers with hypertension, and 35 normotensive mothers as a control). Cyclophilin A immunohistochemistry was performed on a paraffin-embedded tissue section of placenta

Obesity and Maternal-Placental-Fetal Immunology and Health.

Obesity rates in women of childbearing age is now at 29%, according to recent CDC reports. It is known that obesity is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, including disruptions in cellular function and cytokine levels. In pregnant women who are obese, associated placental dysfunction can lead to small for gestational age (SGA) infants. More frequently, however, maternal obesity is associated with large for gestational age (LGA) newborns, who also have higher incidence of metabolic disease and asthma due to elevated levels of inflammation. In addition, anthropogenic environmental

Interventions for placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction.

Pregnancy complications adversely impact both mother and/or fetus throughout the lifespan. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs when a fetus fails to reach their intrauterine potential for growth, it is the second highest leading cause of infant mortality, and leads to increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases in later life due 'fetal programming'. Abnormal placental development, growth and/or function underlies approximately 75% of FGR cases and there is currently no treatment save delivery, often prematurely. We previously demonstrated in a murine model of FGR that nanoparticle

Human Chorionic Villous Differentiation and Placental Development.

In humans, the placenta provides the only fetomaternal connection and is essential for establishing a pregnancy as well as fetal well-being. Additionally, it allows maternal physiological adaptation and embryonic immunological acceptance, support, and nutrition. The placenta is derived from extra-embryonic tissues that develop rapidly and dynamically in the first weeks of pregnancy. It is primarily composed of trophoblasts that differentiate into villi, stromal cells, macrophages, and fetal endothelial cells (FEC). Placental differentiation may be closely related to perinatal diseases, includi

Management of Placental Transfusion to Neonates After Delivery.

This review summarizes high-quality evidence supporting delayed umbilical cord clamping to promote placental transfusion to preterm and term neonates. In preterm neonates, delayed cord clamping may decrease mortality and the need for blood transfusions. Although robust data are lacking to guide cord management strategies in many clinical scenarios, emerging literature is reviewed on numerous topics including delivery mode, twin gestations, maternal comorbidities (eg, gestational diabetes, red blood cell alloimmunization, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection, and severe acute respirator

Influence of COVID-19 infection on placental function.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnant women are more susceptible to infectious diseases because of their natural immunosuppression. SARS-CoV-2 seems to be a potential risk for the condition of women and the fetus. Unfortunately, knowledge of the influence of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) on pregnant women and their children is still very limited, and further investigation and analysis are needed. The aim of the study was to conduct a meta-analysis of research about the impact of COVID-19 on the placenta. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Articles published between 2020 and 2021 and contained in the PubMed and Elsevie

Placental chorioangioma: an unusual cause of neonatal cardiomyopathy.

A late preterm baby presented with clinical and echocardiographic features of cardiomyopathy and cardiac failure soon after birth. After extensive metabolic, infective and genetic investigations, the likely cause was established to be due to multiple small placental chorioangiomas. While large placental chorioangiomas are associated with maternal, fetal and neonatal complications, small chorioangiomas are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally on placental histology. Our case demonstrates that multiple small chorioangiomas might behave like a giant chorioangioma, causing significant n

The road (not) taken - Placental transfer and interspecies differences.

Species differences are among the main reasons for the high failure rate of preclinical studies. A better awareness and understanding of these differences might help to improve the outcome of preclinical research. In reproduction, the placenta is the central organ regulating fetal exposure to a substance circulating in the maternal organism. Exact information about placental transfer can help to better estimate the toxic potential of a substance. From an evolutionary point of view, the chorioallantoic placenta is the organ with the highest anatomical diversity among species. Moreover, frequent

Formulating a Meaningful and Comprehensive Placental Phenotypic Classification.

INTRODUCTION: While many placental lesions have been identified and defined, the significance of multiple overlapping lesions has not been addressed. The purpose of our analysis was to evaluate overlapping patterns of placental pathology and determine meaningful phenotypes associated with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: Placental pathology reports were obtained from a single hospital between 2009 and 2018. Placental lesions were grouped into four major categories: acute inflammation (AI), chronic inflammation (CI), maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM), and fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM).

The Impact of Hypoxia in Early Pregnancy on Placental Cells.

Oxygen levels in the placental microenvironment throughout gestation are not constant, with severe hypoxic conditions present during the first trimester. This hypoxic phase overlaps with the most critical stages of placental development, i.e., blastocyst implantation, cytotrophoblast invasion, and spiral artery remodeling initiation. Dysregulation of any of these steps in early gestation can result in pregnancy loss and/or adverse pregnancy outcomes. Hypoxia has been shown to regulate not only the self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation of trophoblast stem cells and progenitor cells,

Placental Location in Maternal-Fetal Surgery for Myelomeningocele.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine incision based on the placental location in open maternal-fetal surgery (OMFS) has never been evaluated in regard to maternal or fetal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether an anterior placenta was associated with increased rates of intraoperative, perioperative, antepartum, obstetric, or neonatal complications in mothers and babies who underwent OMFS for fetal myelomeningocele (fMMC) closure. METHODS: Data from the international multicenter prospective registry of patients who underwent OMFS for fMMC closure (fMMC Consortium Registry, De

Interleukin-6 pathobiology in equine placental infection.

PROBLEM: Ascending placentitis is the leading cause of abortion in the horse. Interleukin (IL)-6 is considered predictive of placental infection in other species, but little is understood regarding its role in the pathophysiology of ascending placentitis. METHOD OF STUDY: Sub-acute ascending placentitis was induced via trans-cervical inoculation of S zooepidemicus, and various fluids/serum/tissues collected 8 days later. Concentrations of IL-6 were detected within fetal fluids and serum in inoculated (n = 6) and control (n = 6) mares. RNASeq was performed on the placenta (endometrium and chor

Placental Pathology in Maternal Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency is the most common urea cycle disorder, inherited in an X-linked manner. Males are severely affected. Female phenotypes vary from asymptomatic to severe, and symptoms may be triggered by high metabolic states like childbirth. Literature on OTC deficiency in pregnancy and placental pathology is limited. METHODS: Pathology records were searched at a single referral center from 2000-2020 and identified three placental cases from two mothers heterozygous for OTC deficiency. Placental pathology and maternal and neonatal history were reviewe
