BACKGROUND: Antemortem plasma and structural MRI biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are increasingly utilized for diagnosis and prognosis but their ability to predict regional tau burden remains relatively unexplored. We aimed to evaluate predictive models based on antemortem AD plasma and structural MRI for prediction of regional tau pathology in postmortem brain tissue.
METHODS: Autopsy data from 62 participants in the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA) were analyzed (mean age of 84.6 years; 32% female; 1.4 years of mean time of last plasma draw to death). Tau pathology in the hippocampu

OBJECTIVE: Hyponatraemia is often observed in patients with ACTH deficiency who are thought not to suffer from volume depletion. Their high plasma AVP levels relative to plasma osmolality are presumed to be maintained by non-osmotic mechanisms. We attempted to assess volume status from changes in selected clinical measurements related to body fluid balance in the course of i.v. fluid supplementation and following glucocorticoid (GC) replacement in ACTH-deficient patients, and to interpret plasma AVP levels in the context of the estimated volume status.
PATIENTS AND DESIGN: This report consist

The renal handling and effects of an intravenous bolus of frusemide with and without plasma volume expansion with dextran or albumin, and with large variations in plasma albumin concentration, have been studied in five patients with the nephrotic syndrome. Decreased renal sensitivity to frusemide was found in only one patient, who also had hypovolaemia and an activated renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Plasma volume expansion increased the diuresis but not the saluresis, and slightly increased renal sensitivity to frusemide. An increase in albuminuria after albumin infusion did not reduce …

Ethanol intake increases plasma concentrations of triglycerides and chronic ethanol use impairs lipid metabolism and causes chronic inflammation. The gut plays an important role in metabolic handling of nutrients, including lipids, and a leaky gut associated with alcohol intake, allowing inflammatory signals to the portal vein, has been proposed to constitute a mechanism by which ethanol induces hepatic inflammation. We compared the effects of enteral and parenteral administration of ethanol on a range of circulating inflammation markers (including soluble CD163, a marker of liver macrophage a

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is a unique disease of pregnancy. Delivery via caesarean section is the most important way of terminating the pregnancy and treating preeclampsia. Perioperative fluid therapy is performed to maintain the circulatory volume and reduce tissue edema. This study evaluated the effects of hypertonic sodium chloride hydroxyethyl starch 40 (HSH40) as perioperative fluid therapy for preeclampsia patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty preeclamptic women were randomly divided into two groups: the Ringer's solution group and the HSH40 group. Their ECG, HR, MAP, and SPO2 were monit

To define changes in the magnocellular neuroendocrine system during lactation and pregnancy, we compared plasma levels of oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) after polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced hypovolemia and cholecystokinin (CCK) stimulation. Conscious virgin, pregnant (day 20), and lactating (day 6) Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with either PEG (70-600 mg/ml; 35 or 70 ml/kg sc), CCK (100 micrograms/ml; 4 ml/kg ip), or vehicle and decapitated 4 h (PEG) or 5 min (CCK) later. The acute effects of phenylephrine (PHE) administration or intravascular volume loading on right ventricular (RV) function were examined in 34 patients undergoing elective coronary artery surgery. After anesthetic induction with sufentanil and midazolam, 20 patients received PHE to treat hypotension and increase systemic arterial pressure 20% above baseline values. PHE effectively restored arterial pressure without changing stroke index (SI), although RV ejection fraction (RVEF) declined (41.3% to 37.6%) with concomitant increases in RV end-diastolic volume index (RVEDVI) (86.3 to 97.5 mL/m2)

The intravascular volumes were determined in 42 protein-calorie-depleted Shi children, and in 14 healthy patients. The red cell volume (RCV) was determined by a radiochromium technique; the total blood volume (TBV), the plasma volume (PV), and the total circulating albumin (TCA) were derived. The values were related to weight without edema, to expected weight for height, and to body surface area. Related values were averaged and were correlated with both the weight deviation and the plasma albumin level. Figures for healthy Shi children were comparable with American normal standards. Malnouris…

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that low-volume high-intensity swimming has a larger impact on insulin sensitivity and glucose control than high-volume low-intensity swimming in inactive premenopausal women with mild hypertension.
METHODS: Sixty-two untrained premenopausal women were randomised to an inactive control (n = 20; CON), a high-intensity low-volume (n = 21; HIT) or a low-intensity high-volume (n = 21; LIT) training group. During the 15-week intervention period, HIT performed 3 weekly 6-10 × 30-s all-out swimming intervals (average heart rate (HR) = 86 ± 3 % HRmax) interspersed by

In Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1), accumulation of the lipid substrates glucosylceramide and glucosylsphingosine (lyso-GL-1 or lyso-Gb1), primarily in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow, leads to progressive hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and skeletal disease. Plasma glucosylceramide elevations are modest, variable, and normalize within weeks of starting treatment before clinical changes are evident, and therefore, have limited value for monitoring treatment responses. Serum chitotriosidase activity, a widely used GD biomarker, is also elevated in many other conditions but is not

The affect of negative thermal stress on hematological variables at rest, and during submaximal (sub ex) and maximal exercise (max ex) were observed for young males who volunteered in two experimental sessions, performed in cold (0 degree C) and in normal room temperature (20 degrees C). At rest, hematological variables such as RBC and derivates Hb and Hct were significantly increased (P less than 0.05) during cold stress exposure, while plasma volume decreased. The findings of this study suggest that the major factor inducing hypovolemia during low thermal stress can be imputed to local plasm…

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL) plays a major role in atherosclerosis. We undertook the present study to clarify the relationship between plasma OxLDL and the ischemic volume. We used ELISA to determine plasma OxLDL levels, and performed diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MRI (DWI, PWI) to measure the ischemic volume in 44 ischemic stroke patients. Based on the location of the ischemic lesion, they were divided into three groups: Group I (GI, n = 21) had cortical lesions, Group II (GII, n = 17) had lesions in the basal ganglia or brain stem, and Group III (GIII, n = 6) had massive lesi

Plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), aldosterone (PA), vasopressin (AVP), and the plasma renin activity (PRA) were examined in 15 vascularly decompensated patients suffering from liver cirrhosis, before and after administration of albumin and after a subsequent administration of furosemide. The initial ANP level was lower in 9 patients (group "A") and higher in 6 patients (group "B") than in healthy controls (Group "A": 19.5 +/- 3.0 fmol/ml; group "B": 36.7 +/- 3.9 fmol/ml; control: 25.8 +/- 2.4 fmol/ml). The initial PRA (4.4 +/- 1.0 ng AngI/ml/h) and AVP (8.5 +/- 1.5 pg/ml) acti

Exogenous human serum albumin (HSA) is generally used empirically and its role in surgery is poorly defined. The function and kinetics of HSA in the body are reviewed to provide rational guidelines for its use in surgery. Starling's law of transcapillary exchange is important, especially when applied to the capillary beds of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscle, lungs and intestines; but it overestimates the importance of maintaining oncotic pressure in the two situations where HSA is clinically beneficial--hypovolemia and plasma volume sequestration. In hypovolemia, the harmful e…
