Update in disease-specific quality-of-life studies in facial plastic surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Improvements in the quality of life (QOL) of patients undergoing facial plastic and reconstructive surgery are readily apparent to any practitioner performing these procedures and interacting with these patients. However, proving these benefits objectively has become ever more important in the current practice environment and there has been a body of literature reported to address this need. RECENT FINDINGS: As techniques for facial reanimation, revision cleft surgery and other procedures are further developed and the tailored treatments of these ailments are honed, the bod

Review of AlloDerm Acellular Human Dermis Regenerative Tissue Matrix in Multiple Types of Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

PURPOSE: AlloDerm acellular human dermis is used for repair or replacement of damaged or inadequate skin tissue. It has been used successfully in multiple types of surgeries, including abdominal wall reconstruction, breast reconstruction, and head and neck reconstruction. Its application to ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery is less well described. This study seeks to evaluate the efficacy and factors influencing surgical outcomes using Alloderm in multiple types of oculofacial plastic surgery. METHODS: Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review of 84 patients who und

Training and oculoplastics: past, present and future.

PURPOSE: To describe the evolution of ophthalmic plastic surgical training since the establishment of an oculoplastic subspecialty. METHODS: A systematic search and consultation was undertaken, involving various oculoplastic societies and selected members, to better define the previous and currently evolving training paradigms in oculoplastics. The salient events along with variances that exist in programs across the world today are analysed. RESULTS: Oculoplastics emerged as a distillation of expertise from other specialties following World War 2 where a high rate of ophthalmic and oculopla

History of craniosynostosis surgery and the evolution of minimally invasive endoscopic techniques: the University of Florida experience.

Craniosynostosis is the premature and abnormal fusion of 1 of the 6 suture lines that form the living skull and can occur as part of a syndrome or as an isolated defect (nonsyndromic). The first reported surgical procedure for correction of craniosynostosis was performed in 1890 by Lannelongue who advocated releasing, but not resecting, the fused suture. Craniofacial surgery has developed its own identity in the last 3 decades, with the Frenchman Tessier seen as the founding father. There have been many new developments such as distraction osteogenesis, biodegradable miniplate fixation, and th

Lengthening temporalis myoplasty: a surgical tool for dynamic labial commissure reanimation.

Lengthening temporalis myoplasty (LTM), first described by Labbé in 1997, ensures the transfers of the entire temporal muscle from the coronoid process to the upper half of the lip without interposition of aponeurotic tissue. The temporal muscle changes function because it is entirely mobilized toward another effector: the labial commissure. Thanks to brain plasticity, the muscle loses its chewing function, and after 6 months of speech rehabilitation it acquires its new smiling function. We describe technical points especially the coronoid process approaches both through an upper temporal foss

Ischemic optic neuropathy and implications for plastic surgeons: report of a new case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative visual loss is a rare and devastating complication after nonocular as well as ocular surgery. A case of such a complication arising as a consequence of nonocular surgery prompted a review of the literature, and an appraisal of current theories on etiology, risk factors, and potential treatment options, as well as implications for informed consent. It is clear from our review that all patients undergoing both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery are at risk. METHODS: A literature review was performed to identify all cases of ischemic optic neuropathy (both anterior and

The corner of the mouth lift and management of the oral commissure grooves.

In many facial plastic surgery cases, the downward turn to the corner of the mouth can be the single remaining aging factor that "spoils" an otherwise excellent rejuvenative surgical effort and is the area patients report that they wish that their facelift had corrected. This article discusses pointing out to the consultative, prospective patient the adjunctive procedures required to correct the downward turn of the mouth and help efface the deep oral commissure grooves. Various procedures and techniques for corner of the mouth rejuvenation are presented, including minimally invasive injectabl

A comparison of cyclizine, ondansetron and placebo as prophylaxis against postoperative nausea and vomiting in children.

Nausea and vomiting is a relevant and common problem with unfavourable sequelae in children undergoing some plastic surgery procedures. There is a lack of anti-emetic trials performed in children, with only a few investigating the roles of the older anti-emetic agents such as cyclizine compared with newer ones such as ondansetron. This randomised, controlled, double-blind study examined the effectiveness of a single dose of ondansetron (0.1 mg x kg-1), cyclizine (20 mg) and placebo (normal saline) in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in 150 children (mean age 3.6 years) under…

[Plastic surgery reconstruction following irradiation].

Radiation damage after combined tumor therapy may involve skin, subcutaneous tissue, nerves, bones and viscera. Ulceration and subsequent infection can result in life-threatening conditions. Early reconstructive procedures restore function, prevent further damage and alleviate pain. Plastic surgery has developed special fasciocutaneous and musculocutaneous flaps for each region.

Periodontal plastic surgery associated with treatment for the removal of gingival overgrowth.

BACKGROUND: Excisional biopsies of gingival overgrowths, performed with safety margins, frequently result in mucogingival defects. These defects may produce esthetic problems and increase the chances of dentin hyperesthesia and its possibility of hindering oral hygiene. METHODS: Two clinical cases are reported in which gingival overgrowths were removed by excisional biopsy, resulting in unsightly defects. The first clinical case presents an invasive approach for the treatment of a recurrent pyogenic granuloma in the anterior maxilla, and the second depicts a complete removal of a peripheral o

Traumatic ulna fracture with plastic deformation of the radius in a skeletally mature pregnant female: a case report.

CASE: A 20-year-old pregnant female presented with an ulna fracture after a crush and bending type injury. Anatomic reduction of her ulna was not possible due to plastic deformation of the radius, requiring a corrective osteotomy of the radius. She is now 16 months out from surgery with full painless range of motion and radiographic union. CONCLUSION: Plastic deformation of forearm fractures in adults is a rare phenomenon. It is possible that the patient's pregnancy contributed to her injury. Patients with uncommon fracture morphology can make operative intervention more complicated and neces

Communication and Branding in Aesthetic Surgery: Insights from an ISAPS Fellowship.

Patient communication and ethical branding are crucial determinants of satisfaction and outcomes in aesthetic surgery. This article summarizes insights from an ISAPS Fellowship at Velthuis Kliniek, Rotterdam, under Dr. H.P.Jeroen Stevens and Dr. Jacques van der Meulen, highlighting strategies for patient-centered consultations and professional branding. Consultations emphasized precise, constructive language, avoiding anxiety-inducing terms such as "complication" or "revision," and favoring expressions like "refinement" and "individual variability" to manage expectations effectively. Passport Not Required: A Comparison of Plastic Surgery Complications From Domestic and International Medical Tourism.

INTRODUCTION: Medical tourism, commonly defined as the practice of traveling to another country for medical care, has increased in popularity over the past decade, particularly in aesthetic surgery where high costs lead patients to seek cheaper options abroad. Although patients may save money, inherent risks to medical tourism include truncated postoperative care and limited ability to evaluate providers. When complications arise, patients present to local institutions rather than to their original surgeons. Although literature describes complications from international tourism, less is known
