Genetic variant and vitamin D in multiple sclerosis: Association of the BsmI (rs1544410) Polymorphism in a western Mexican population.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a multifactorial disease; result of an interaction among environmental and genetic factors, among vitamin D hypovitaminosis. Genetic variants in vitamin D receptor (VDR) may affect vitamin D functionality and levels, increasing the susceptibility to MS risk. OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between the BsmI (rs1544410) polymorphism of the VDR gene, using dominant, recessive, co-dominant, and the risk of MS in a western Mexican population. METHODS: A case-control study was performed. One hundred and seventy-five patients with MS and 118 controls we

The Electroretinogram I-Wave, a Component Originating in the Retinal OFF-Pathway, Associates With a Myopia Genetic Risk Polymorphism.

PURPOSE: One of the strongest genetic associations with myopia is near the GJD2 gene. Recently, this locus was associated with cone-driven electroretinograms (ERGs), with findings highlighting OFF pathway signals specifically. The ERG i-wave is thought to originate in retinal OFF pathways. We explored this component and tested the hypothesis that it would be associated with the myopia risk locus. METHODS: International standard LA3 ERGs, recorded with conductive fiber electrodes, were analyzed, first from patients with rare monogenic deficits impairing the ON pathway, or both ON and OFF pathw

MMP2 and MMP9 are associated with the pathogenesis of recurrent pregnancy loss through protein expression rather than genetic polymorphism.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) degrade extracellular matrix proteins and are important for placenta formation during early pregnancy. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is associated with abnormalities in endometrial extracellular matrix remodeling. This study aimed to elucidate the roles of MMP2 and MMP9 in RPL pathogenesis. In total, 295 women with a history of RPL and 101 controls were included in this genetic study. Genotype analysis was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphisms. For proteolytic analysis, decidua and villi were collected from 1

Genetic Polymorphism on Chromosome 4q25 (rs17570669) May Predict Recurrence After Successful Electrical Cardioversion in Patients with Persistent Atrial Fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: Direct current electrical cardioversion (DCCV) is an effective rhythm-control option for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Despite initial success, a high recurrence rate remains a significant challenge. There is limited data on the genetic predictors of AF recurrence following successful DCCV. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with AF are also linked to recurrence after DCCV in the Turkish population. METHODS: Seventy-five patients with persistent AF, who achieved stable sinus rhythm following DCCV, we

The TRKB rs2289656 genetic polymorphism is associated with acute suicide attempts in depressed patients: A transversal case control study.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide Attempts (SA) are the main complications of Major Depressive Episodes (MDE) and are difficult to predict. Suicide is associated with the expression of Receptor Tyrosin-Kinase B (TRKB), the receptor of the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) involved in MDE. However, the impact of its genetic polymorphisms as predictive factors of SA should be clarified. Our main aim is to assess the association of 8 TRKB genetic polymorphisms and SA in depressed patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 624 patients currently experiencing an MDE in the context of Major Depressive Disorder

Genetic polymorphism of rs9277535 in HLA-DP associated with rheumatoid arthritis and anti-CCP production in a Chinese population.

HLA-II molecules are critical in triggering human immune response, especially in activating CD4+ T cells. HLA-DP, belonging to HLA-II molecules, draws increasing attention for its role in presentation of viral antigen and autoantigen to T cells. Researches reported single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of HLA-DP associated with HBV infection and autoimmune diseases such as SLE. However, little is known about the relationship between HLA-DP and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Rs9277535 is located in 3' UTR region of HLA-DPB1, a subunit of HLA-DP, and was reported to affect HLA-DP mRNA expression. In

GSTO1*E155del polymorphism associated with increased risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease: association hypothesis for an uncommon genetic variant.

Glutathione S-transferases are multifunctional enzymes involved in cellular detoxification. A genetic linkage was found between Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and the chromosome 10q, where the GSTO1 and GSTO2 genes are located, leading to the hypothesis that GST Omega class (GSTO) genes may be an AD risk factor. Since it is still controversial, we decided to explore GSTO polymorphisms in Italian cohorts. We analyzed 119 AD patients and 114 healthy controls for the GSTO gene polymorphisms. In particular we investigated two common polymorphisms (GSTO1*A140D, GSTO2*N142D) and two uncommon variants (GST
