INTRODUCTION: Traumatic cauda equina syndromes due to projectile wounds often have a poor prognosis. We report on an unusual ballistic cauda equina traumatism with a good functional outcome.
CLINICAL CASE: A 44-year-old man was admitted to emergency room for an incomplete cauda equina syndrome after trying to kill himself by means of a pneumatic nail gun. In this report, we describe the case of a patient with a long-term radiculopathy due to epidural lipomatosis at the L3-4 intervertebral disc level. The fatty tissue was located on the dorsal side of the dural sac in the spinal canal and compressed the dural sac. The fatty tissue was removed endoscopically. After surgery, the symptoms disappeared, and neurological deficits normalized. We would like to state that epidural lipomatosis is a good candidate for minimally invasive endoscopic surgery because of its anatomic location.

In about 10% of cases, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) presents with additional myeloradiculitic features mimicking acute poliomyelitis, which can rarely appear as the sole symptom. We report on a 59-year-old man infected with TBE in Thuringia,Germany, who developed polyradiculitis with rapidly progressive, predominantly proximal tetraparesis and respiratory failure. We discuss the differential diagnosis and the epidemiological relevance in conjunction with a second typical case of TBE acquired in the same region and time period.

One should distinguish two types of polyradiculoneuritis during visceral carcinoma. Metastic polyneuritis and paraneoplastic polyneuritis. They fulfil distinct anatomical criteria and their pathogenesis is different. Both, however, have clinical analogies and a similar course. The survival time in both types is usually a few weeks. It rarely exceeds one year.

A 29-year-old pregnant woman was delivered by cesarean section under a combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. Thirty hours after an uneventful surgery, she complained of weakness in her lower extremities and developed fecal and urinary incontinence. OBJECT: Intradural cauda equina and conus medullaris tumors (CECMTs) are rare. Only a few large clinical series exist to date. Therefore, clinical symptoms, surgical complications, and outcomes are poorly understood. Neuropathic pain associated with spinal cord injury is caused by complex neural mechanisms and is often refractory to standard therapy. Salmon calcitonin was an effective treatment for neuropathic symptoms in this case series of three patients with recent spinal cord injury. Salmon calcitonin is already used to help manage pain after limb amputation and also after vertebral fractures and it is perhaps surprising that it has not been trialled previously for spinal cord injury pain. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman was admitted for evaluation of vertigo. An unruptured fusiform aneurysm of left distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery was found and presumed to be the cause of her vertigo.
