Sleep architecture in adults with epilepsy: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether sleep architecture differs in subgroups of adults with epilepsy or in adults with epilepsy compared to control populations. METHODS: We completed a systematic review of papers published in two databases up to May 2018, with adults with epilepsy who have undergone either two consecutive nights of in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) or one night of ambulatory PSG. Our review followed the PRISMA statements and guidelines and the protocol was registered in the PROSPERO platform prior to initiation of the review process (record CRD42018084009). RESULTS: Five studies …

Quantifying Leg Movement Activity During Sleep.

Currently, 2 sets of similar rules for recording and scoring leg movement (LM) exist, including periodic LM during sleep (PLMS) and periodic LM during wakefulness. The former were published in 2006 by a task force of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group, and the second in 2007 by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This article reviews the basic recording methods, scoring rules, and computer-based programs for PLMS. Less frequent LM activities, such as alternating leg muscle activation, hypnagogic foot tremor, high-frequency LMs, and excessive fragmentary myoclonus are brie

Tracheobronchomegaly associated tracheomalacia: analysis by sleep study.

Tracheobronchomegaly (TBM) occasionally may progress to extensive tracheomalacia which leads to respiratory failure. Spirometry, dynamic expiratory multidetector computed tomography (CT), bronchoscopy are used to diagnose patients of suspected tracheobronchomalacia. We used the technique of night-time monitoring of respiratory variables to show the presence of respiratory abnormalities during sleep and which was corrected by applying nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The study showed the presence of both apnoea and hypopnoeas, which were obstructive in nature with an apnoea-hyp

How do sleep outcomes differ between children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and peers without diabetes? A meta-analysis and meta-regression.

This study examined differences in sleep duration (primary outcome) and sleep quality (secondary outcomes) between children and adolescents … d no clear difference (Mean Difference [MD] = -7.30 min/night, 95% CI -19.66 to 5.06; I2 = 19.58%); polysomnography suggested shorter sleep in type 1 diabetes with wide confidence intervals (MD = -19.56 min/night, 95% CI -50.39 to 11.26; I2 = 36.06%); questionnaires tended to report shorter self-reported sleep with substantial heterogeneity (MD = -21.03 min/night …

Polysomnographic arousal index and periodic limb movement index in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting: an exploratory case-comparison study.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD), but its phenotypic variations and their imp … (CABG). METHODS: This case-comparison study analyzed a prospective adult patient group undergoing polysomnography before CABG, compared to an age- and gender-matched retrospective group undergoing polysomnography for employment screening. Sleep parameters, including PLMI, arousal index, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and sleep onset latency, were assessed. Statist …

Association Between Severe Obesity and Pediatric Obstructive Apnea-A Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of severe obesity on the severity of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. SETTING: Tertiary stand-alone pediatric hospital. METHODS: Consecutive children with obesity (≥95th percentile body mass index [BMI]) who underwent full-night polysomnography between January 2021 and December 2021 were analyzed. Patients were categorized into obesity (≥95th percentile BMI and <120% of the 95th percentile) and severe obesity (≥120% of the 95th percentile BMI). The association between severe obesity and severe OSA was asse…

Deep Sleep, Olfactory Loss, and Cognition in Early-stage Parkinson's Disease: Pilot Study Results.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) have a higher risk of developing dementia compared to age-matched controls. Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and hyposmia can influence symptoms severity. We report associations between polysomnography-assessed sleep architecture, olfactory identification, and cognition. Twenty adults with early-stage PD (mean age 69 ± 7.9; 25% female) completed cognitive assessments, the Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT), and overnight in-clinic polysomnography. A global cognitive score was derived from principal component analysis. Linear regress…

Evaluation of auditory system in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with auditory dysfunction both to the cochlear and higher auditory pathways. However, available literatures presented conflicting results. We aimed to study the impact of OSA severity and their polysomnography parameters on hearing function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients were included after evaluation for sleep disorders and were divided into four groups in accordance with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Pure tone audiometry (PTA), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) wer…

Developmental Profile of Sleep and Its Potential Impact on Daytime Functioning from Childhood to Adulthood in Sickle Cell Anaemia.

UNLABELLED: Young individuals with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) experience sleep disturbances and often experience daytime tiredness, which in turn may impact on their daytime functioning and academic attainment, but there are few longitudinal data. METHODS: Data on sleep habits and behaviour were taken on the same day as an in-hospital polysomnography. This study assesses the developmental sleep profiles of children and young adults aged 4-23 years old with SCA. We examined retrospective polysomnography (PSG) and questionnaire data. RESULTS: A total of 256 children with a median age of 10.67 y…

Surgical Treatment for Central Sleep Apnea due to Occipitocervical Compression Myelopathy in a Patient with Klippel-Feil Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Central sleep apnea (CSA) due to occipitocervical compression myelopathy is an extremely rare condition. Here we report a case of surgical treatment for CSA due to occipitocervical compression myelopathy in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old man had become aware of a gradually progressive clumsiness and gait disturbance without any cause of injury 5 years before. He had complicated respiratory discomfort during sleep for the previous month and visited our hospital. Neurologic examination revealed severe myelopathy. Polysomnography showed CSA and …

Long-Term Follow-up Investigation of Isolated Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Without Atonia Without Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder: A Pilot Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a harbinger of synuclein-mediated neurodegenerative diseases. It is unknown if this also applies to isolated REM sleep without atonia (RWA). We performed a long-term follow-up investigation of subjects with isolated RWA. METHODS: Participants were recruited from 50 subjects with isolated RWA who were identified at the sleep laboratory of the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of Innsbruck between 2003 and 2005. Eligible subjects underwent follow-up clinical examination, polysomnography, and a…
