The age-related characteristics of adults with asthma who visited emergency departments in Korea from 2007 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the patterns of emergency department (ED) visits of patients with asthma is important for disease control and prevention of exacerbations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of adult patients who visited EDs because of their asthma. METHODS: Patients with asthma, ages ≥19 years old, who visited 117 EDs throughout Korea between January 2007 and December 2012 were identified in the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) data base using the International Classification of Disease, 10th revision, codes J45 (asthma) and J46 (

Peer Support for the Hardly Reached: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities are aggravated when prevention and care initiatives fail to reach those they are intended to help. Groups can be classified as hardly reached according to a variety of circumstances that fall into 3 domains: individual (e.g., psychological factors), demographic (e.g., socioeconomic status), and cultural-environmental (e.g., social network). Several reports have indicated that peer support is an effective means of reaching hardly reached individuals. However, no review has explored peer support effectiveness in relation to the circumstances associated with being h

[Possible sources of Trichinella infection in the indigenous population of Chukotka].

Statistical methods confirmed that the dietary intake of traditionally made meat from marine mammals and polar bear could cause Trichinella infection in the residents of the communities of the Chukotka Peninsula.

Type 2 diabetes in indigenous Australian children and adolescents.

Rates of type 2 diabetes are higher among Indigenous than non-Indigenous Australian children and adolescents. Presentation may be incidental, part of obesity investigation, symptomatic (polyuria and polydipsia) or in ketoacidosis. Investigation should include assessment of fasting insulin, c-peptide and autoantibodies, as well as assessment of diabetes complications and co-morbidities. Management is a challenge, particularly in a resource-limited setting. Management should involve the whole family and, in some cases, extended family, and community, local health-care providers are key, and a mu

An epizootic of leptospirosis in California sea lions.

Between May and December 1984, an epizootic of leptospirosis in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) occurred along the west coast of the United States from Monterey County, Calif, northward to Seattle, Wash. Clinical signs observed were severe depression, excessive thirst, and tucked-up posturing, with associated leukocytosis and increased globulin, BUN, and creatinine values. Effective antibiotic therapy consisted of tetracycline (22 mg/kg of body weight every 8 hours, orally) or potassium penicillin G (44,000 U/kg every 12 hours, orally or IM) for 10 to 14 days. Sixty-six sea lions

Significance of genetic factors in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: a review.

Observations suggesting a genetic basis for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are reviewed with particular emphasis on the finding of familial aggregation. Studies of both Tourette syndrome and simple tic have found that approximately 30% of patients have a positive family history of tic. The significance of this figure depends on a number of factors, in particular the prevalence of positive tic histories in the population. If the latter figure is 10%, which the best available evidence suggests is a reasonable estimate, approximately 30% of families in the general population would be expected to

User perceptions of a point-of-use water filtration device: Qualitative, focus group study.

Universal access to clean water is sixth of the United Nations sustainable development goals. It has not yet been achieved. Boiling water, for water purification, is cost prohibitive and polluting. Diarrheal diseases linked to unsafe water cause morbidity and mortality in young children in Uganda, where most if the rural population lacks access to treated water. Bacterial water contaminants include Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhi. Community perceptions of water quality and mitigation efforts in rural Uganda is unknown. In the absence of safe drinking water, a low-cost method of water pur

Environmental and structural risk factors for mycetoma in the White Nile State, Sudan: an ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: For decades, poor Sudanese communities in rural areas have silently battled mycetoma, a stigmatizing, disabling, neglected tropical disease. Its linkage to specific, ecology-dependent livelihoods such as farming, woodcutting and collecting and animal herding has obscured its cause and environmental and structural dimensions at both the local and global levels. This ethnographic study challenges the prevailing singular focus on the injuries that have dominated biomedical reasoning for years. METHODS: We deployed an ethnographic approach utilizing participant observation, in-depth in

Healing Together: Advocating for Community Mental Health Through Restorative Circles in Low-Income Latine and Pre-Columbian Indigenous Immigrant Communities.

Low-income immigrant communities experience significant trauma and structural health inequities, particularly in mental health access, quality of care, and outcomes. This study evaluates the effects of restorative circles as a community-driven intervention for psychological trauma among low-income Latine and Pre-Columbian Indigenous immigrants in rural California. We conducted three focus groups (N=34), each representing a distinct immigrant community. Findings revealed diverse, community-specific challenges: Relocated immigrants (n=14) reported post-COVID-19 trauma, economic precarity, and th

Adherence challenges to therapeutic footwear among high risk diabetic foot populations in urban Southwest China.

Diabetic foot ulcers [DFUs] are severe complications of diabetes, and therapeutic footwear plays a crucial role in their prevention. However the factors influencing adherence to therapeutic among high-risk individuals in urban areas remain poorly understood. With increasing urbanization and migrant workers, this study aims to explore the challenges of adherence to therapeutic footwear among high-risk diabetic foot patients in urban area. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, and analyzed using a

Co-creation and community engagement in implementation research with vulnerable populations: a co-creation process in China.

Background Top-down implementation strategies led by researchers often generate limited or tokenistic community engagement. Co-creation, a community engagement methodology, aims to create a shared leadership role of program beneficiaries in the development and implementation of programs, and encourages early and deep involvement of community members. We describe our experience using a four-stage co-creation approach to adapt and implement a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) testing intervention among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Methods We adapted a four-stage approach to co-cre

The association of age at menarche and adult height with mammographic density in the International Consortium of Mammographic Density.

Similar overall effect estimates were observed in meta-analyses across population groups. CONCLUSIONS: In one of the largest international studies to date, later age at menarche was positively associated with mammographic density. This is in contrast to its association with breast cancer risk, providing little evidence of mediation. In …

Implementation of School-Based COVID-19 Testing Programs in Underserved Populations.

Evidence suggests that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing in schools can add a layer of protection to reduce the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 and facilitate a safer return to in-person learning. Despite this evidence, implementation of testing in school settings has been challenging initially because of a lack of funding and limited availability of testing, but, as the pandemic has progressed and more funding and resources have been devoted to testing, other implementation challenges have arisen. We describe key implementation barriers and strategies that

Historic and bioarchaeological evidence supports late onset of post-Columbian epidemics in Native California.

Catastrophic decline of Indigenous populations in the Americas following European contact is one of the most severe demographic events in the history of humanity, but uncertainty persists about the timing and scale of the collapse, which has implications for not only Indigenous history but also the understanding of historical ecology. A long-standing hypothesis that a continent-wide pandemic broke out immediately upon the arrival of Spanish seafarers has been challenged in recent years by a model of regional epidemics erupting asynchronously, causing different rates of population decline in di
