Predicting Stroke Risk Based on Health Behaviours: Development of the Stroke Population Risk Tool (SPoRT).

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours, important factors in cardiovascular disease, are increasingly a focus of prevention. We appraised whether str … using self-reported information focused on health behaviours. Risk assessment can be performed with population health surveys to support population health planning or outside of clinical settings to support patient-focused prevention.

Genomewide association study on chronic periodontitis in Korean population: results from the Yangpyeong health cohort.

AIM: This study aims to locate the genes related to periodontitis through genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Korean population. METHODS: Total of 677 adults aged 44-88 years were recruited from the Yangpyeong cohort in Korea. The participants did not have self-reported metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases or cancer. Periodontitis was assessed using alveolar bone loss from a digital panoramic radiograph and classified into three groups: normal to mild, moderate and severe periodontitis. DNA from blood samples were genotyped using the Illumina Human 1M-duo Beadchip. Multivariable lo

Self-rated health and risk of incident essential tremor: A prospective, population-based study (NEDICES).

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET), a highly-prevalent, progressive, aging-associated neurological disease, poses a significant public health challenge. Aside from its associated motor features, the disease affects cognition in some patients, mood, and morale, and has been associated with increased risk of mortality in the elderly. Studies have not investigated the relationship between self-rated health and risk of ET. We determined whether baseline poor self-rated health was associated with increased risk of incident ET. METHODS: In this prospective, population-based study of people ≥65 years

Sexual orientation disparities in physical health: age and gender effects in a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have identified substantial health disparities between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals compared to heterosexuals. However, possible variation in sexual orientation health disparities by age and according to gender remains largely unexplored. PURPOSE: To examine physical health disparities between LGB and heterosexual individuals in a general population sample in Sweden, to explore potential age and gender differences in these disparities, and to test potential mechanisms underlying any observed disparities. METHOD: Between 2008 and 2013, 60,922 individ

A population-based study of US women's preferred versus usual sources of reproductive health care.

OBJECTIVE: We characterized US women's preferred and usual sources of reproductive health care. STUDY DESIGN: Data were drawn from the Women's Health Care Experiences and Preferences Study, an Internet survey of 1078 women aged 18-55 years randomly sampled from a national probability panel. We described and compared women's preferred and usual sources of care (women's health specialists including obstetricians-gynecologists and family-planning clinics, primary care, other) for Papanicolaou/pelvic examination, contraception, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services using χ(2), logisti

Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between serum bilirubin and dyslipidemia in a health screening population.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between serum total bilirubin (TB) and dyslipidemia. METHODS: Odds ratios (ORs) of prevalent dyslipidemia for TB were calculated in 2113 men and 1265 women. Correlation coefficients between baseline TB as well as the change in TB over 5 years and baseline log triglycerides, baseline HDL cholesterol and the changes in log triglycerides and HDL cholesterol over 5 years were calculated. Hazard ratios (HRs) of incident hypertriglyceridemia and hypo-HDL cholesterolemia for TB over 5 years were calculated in 1324 men and 915 wo

Current smoking is associated with incident ankylosing spondylitis -- the HUNT population-based Norwegian health study.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking contributes to progression of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Because smoking is also a risk factor for incident rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis, our aim was to test whether smoking habits are associated with incident AS. METHODS: Using data from the HUNT health study of the entire adult population of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway, participants in HUNT2 (1995-1997) and HUNT3 (2006-2008) were identified who reported a diagnosis of AS in HUNT3 but not in HUNT2 (n = 107). Incident AS cases were compared with AS-unaffected individuals (n = 35,278) in a case-control desi

Social disparities in women's health service use in the United States: a population-based analysis.

PURPOSE: Poor and disparate reproductive health outcomes in the United States may be related to inadequate and differential receipt of women's health care. We investigated trends in and determinants of adult U.S. women's health service use, 2006-2010. METHODS: We analyzed population data from 7897 women aged 25-44 years in the National Survey of Family Growth from 2006 to 2010 using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Women's health service use in the past year was reported by 74% of the sample. Among noninfertile, sexually active women, 47% used contraceptive services; fewer used pr

The association between sleep problems and perceived health status: a Japanese nationwide general population survey.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems in humans have been reported to impact seriously on daily function and to have a close association with well-being. To examine the effects of individual sleep problems on physical and mental health, we conducted a nationwide epidemiological survey and examined the associations between sleep problems and perceived health status. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys with a face-to-face interview were conducted in August and September, 2009, as part of the Nihon University Sleep and Mental Health Epidemiology Project (NUSMEP). Data from 2559 people aged 20 years or older we

Associations between deprived life circumstances, wellbeing and self-rated health in a socially marginalized population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of self-rated health among socially marginalized people provide insufficient understandings of what influences their self-rated health. This study aimed to examine how disadvantaged life circumstances (homelessness, substance abuse, poverty) and general well-being were associated with poor self-rated health among the socially marginalized. METHODS: In a nationwide survey in Denmark, 1348 users of shelters, drop-in centres, treatment centres and social psychiatric centres answered a self-administered questionnaire. We analysed data using logistic regression. RESUL

Enduring fluoride health hazard for the Vesuvius area population: the case of AD 79 Herculaneum.

BACKGROUND: The study of ancient skeletal pathologies can be adopted as a key tool in assessing and tracing several diseases from past to present times. Skeletal fluorosis, a chronic metabolic bone and joint disease causing excessive ossification and joint ankylosis, has been only rarely considered in differential diagnoses of palaeopathological lesions. Even today its early stages are misdiagnosed in endemic areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Endemic fluorosis induced by high concentrations of fluoride in water and soils is a major health problem in several countries, particularly in vol

Relationships between body mass index, mental health, and suicidal ideation: population perspective using two methods.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), mental health, and suicidal ideation in a general population. METHOD: Two random and representative samples were drawn from the South Australian population. The interview techniques differed, as did the measures of depression and suicidality. One involved 3034 people in face-to-face interviews, and the other involved 30 214 persons providing information via a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) system. BMI was classified according to World Health Organization criteria. In face-to

Development of ambient air quality population-weighted metrics for use in time-series health studies.

A robust methodology was developed to compute population-weighted daily measures of ambient air pollution for use in time-series studies of acute health effects. Ambient data, including criteria pollutants and four fine particulate matter (PM) components, from monitors located in the 20-county metropolitan Atlanta area over the time period of 1999-2004 were normalized, spatially resolved using inverse distance-square weighting to Census tracts, denormalized using descriptive spatial models, and population-weighted. Error associated with applying this procedure with fewer than the maximum numbe

A population-based survey assessing support for mandatory domestic violence reporting by health care personnel.

BACKGROUND: State laws mandating health care personnel to contact police when treating patients injured as a result of domestic violence are controversial. Attitudes toward these laws have been studied in select groups, but never in a large population-based sample. METHODS: We measured support for mandatory reporting (MR) among 845 women in 11 cities who participated in a telephone survey assessing risk factors for intimate partner violence. Abused women were oversampled to create equal groups (427 abused and 418 non-abused); results are presented stratified by abuse status or weighted based
