The Management of Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer in a Veteran Patient Population: Issues and Recommendations.

The ability of the Veterans Health Administration System to care for veterans with bladder cancer is influenced by the increased complexity of both veterans and the system's capacity to do so, which is determined by personnel and equipment allocation. Herein, we review the guidelines for bladder cancer management in the context of this population and highlight unique veteran characteristics that impact the delivery of bladder cancer care within the Veterans Health Administration System. There are opportunities for standardization and implementation, which can improve the quality of this care,

'Teeth Matter': engaging people experiencing homelessness with oral health promotion efforts.

People with experience of homelessness commonly suffer from poor oral health and are likely to have low-level engagement with dental services. 'Teeth Matter' was a pilot study developed to examine whether peer education could result in improved plaque management among people who are experiencing homelessness. Based on the experience gained from developing and implementing the study, and taking into consideration the views of everyone involved, this paper provides a list of suggestions and resources that can be used to improve engagement of this population with oral health promotion activities.

A Report from the Cambodia Training Event for Awareness of Melioidosis (C-TEAM), October 2017.

Melioidosis is an endemic infection in Cambodia, a lower middle income SE Asian country. Despite more laboratories isolating and identifying Burkholderia pseudomallei in recent years, the infection remains under-recognised and under-diagnosed, particularly in the adult population. Lack of knowledge about the disease and lack of utilization of microbiology laboratories contributes to this, along with laboratory capacity issues. Treatment costs often hamper optimal management. In response to these issues, a national one-health training event was held in October 2017 to raise awareness of the dis

Acute respiratory failure.

Pregnancy entails many unique physiologic changes that make the management of ARDS both challenging and unique. Most of these women are young and in excellent health before their acute injury, and their survival should exceed that of the general population who develop ARDS. We advocate aggressive management of the suspected lung injury including early intubation and the institution of invasive hemodynamic monitoring. This approach ensures the most thorough assessment of the extent of the initial injury and allows rapid assessment of therapeutic maneuvers and their subsequent adjustment. Our go

Perspectives on primary care management of chronic hepatitis B in refugees: findings from qualitative interviews with healthcare providers in Melbourne, Victoria.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, healthcare providers face significant challenges in meeting the niche health needs of refugees. Social determinants of health, including limited health literacy and finances, complicate refugees' access to treatment for conditions, such as chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Understanding the strategies utilised by a specialised general practice for refugees can offer guidance for treating this population. The aim of this study was to explore how primary care is currently managing CHB care tailored to refugees and to identify areas for potential improvements. METHODS: Between

Developing a Public Health Response to Mycoplasma genitalium.

Although Mycoplasma genitalium is increasingly recognized as a sexually transmitted pathogen, at present there is no defined public health response to this relatively newly identified sexually transmitted infection. Currently available data are insufficient to justify routinely screening any defined population for M. genitalium infection. More effective therapies, data on acceptability of screening and its impact on clinical outcomes, and better information on the natural history of infection will likely be required before the value of potential screening programs can be adequately assessed. The Community Paramedicine at Clinic Program: Improving Participant Health while Preserving Healthcare System Resources.

Vulnerable populations such as low-income older adults in social housing suffer from poor quality of life and are impacted by chronic diseases. These populations are also high users of emergency services, which contribute to high healthcare costs. Community-based, patient-centred interventions, such as community paramedicine (CP) programs, can address the healthcare gaps for these underserved populations. Community Paramedicine at Clinic (CP@clinic) is an innovative, evidence-based, chronic disease prevention/management program that improves patient health and quality of life, connects them wi
