Consumer and Health Care Professional Perspectives on a Digital Platform to Support Preventive Antenatal Care: Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Modifiable health risks in pregnancy are common and contribute to adverse maternal and infant outcomes, yet preventive care addressing these risks can be difficult to deliver within time-limited antenatal appointments. Hybrid models combining in-person care with digital platforms offer a promising solution; however, there is limited evidence regarding consumer and health care professional perspectives on the preferred content and functionality of such platforms to inform their design. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore consumer and health care professional perspectives on the

Measuring Health and Quality of Life for Women Undergoing Testing and Screening for Chlamydia: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Most economic evaluations of interventions to prevent or control curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, have focused on the longer-term health impacts avoided. However, there is a range of qualitative evidence suggesting that those who think that they might have an STI and/or undergo testing can experience impacts on their quality of life (QoL) at the testing and diagnosis stage. A systematic review was undertaken to identify and evaluate studies that have measured QoL and sexual health for women undergoing testing and screening for chlamydia. METHODS:

Integration of HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health in the era of anti-retroviral-based prevention: findings from assessments in Kenya, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Background: Though substantial progress has helped curb the HIV epidemic, high rates of new HIV infections persist among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting critical gaps in reaching them with integrated HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The scale-up of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and multiple novel HIV prevention products on the horizon offer countries a unique opportunity to expand innovative approaches to deliver comprehensive, integrated HIV prevention/SRH services. Methods: This article comparatively analyzes f

Availability of services for emergency contraceptive pills at high school-based health centers.

CONTEXT: School-based health centers have the potential to increase adolescents' awareness of, access to and use of emergency contraceptive pills, which can prevent unintended pregnancy following unprotected sex. METHODS: In 2001, 250 high school-based health centers responded to a nationwide mail survey that assessed the provision of education, referral and prescription services for emergency contraceptive pills, as well as the perceived benefits and barriers related to offering these services. Frequencies, cross-tabulations and logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. RESU

Smoking cessation in drug treatment programs.

Substance abusers are more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general population. Yet, in most drug treatment programs smoking cessation receives little attention. The purposes of this study were to: (1) examine substance abuse counselors' attitudes toward and practices related to nicotine addiction and smoking cessation treatment; and (2) describe barriers to smoking cessation treatment and smoking policies in substance abuse treatment facilities. A total of 254 substance abuse counselors in Kentucky completed mailed questionnaires (53% response rate). Almost one-fourth were current smokers.

AIDS Community Demonstration Projects for HIV prevention among hard-to-reach groups.

The AIDS Community Demonstration Projects are multicenter prevention projects directing community-based interventions to members of hard-to-reach groups at risk of infection from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The projects are supported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Interventions are derived from theories of behavior change and have as their goal reducing HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in the communities. The current objectives, intentionally narrow to improve the project's specificity and clarity, are to inc

Mammogram utilization among farm women.

Utilization of preventive health care services is lower in rural populations than in urban populations, possibly as a result of barriers to preventive health care that are characteristic of rural settings. This study was conducted to identify factors associated with mammogram utilization among farm women. Mammogram utilization among farm women from six southern Minnesota counties was examined as part of a larger community-based cancer intervention study. Farm women aged 40 and older were randomly selected from a list of farm households and interviewed by telephone to determine mammogram utiliz

Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Services in the Pediatric Setting.

Pediatricians are an important source of health care for adolescents and young adults and can play a significant role in addressing their patients' sexual and reproductive health needs, including preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and promoting healthy relationships. STIs, HIV, and unintended pregnancy are all preventable health outcomes with potentially serious permanent sequelae; the highest rates of STIs, HIV, and unintended pregnancy are reported among adolescents and young adults. Office visits present opportunities to provide comp

Qualitative assessments of anemia-related programs in Ghana reveal gaps and implementation challenges.

In spite of multiple program efforts in Ghana, progress in reducing the burden of anemia is slow. The objective was to conduct multilevel assessments of existing childhood (<5 years) anemia prevention and treatment programs according to UNICEF's conceptual framework of malnutrition, and to elucidate implementation gaps in Ghana. Purposive and snowball sampling strategies recruited 25 program personnel from 20 organizations to participate in audiorecorded interviews conducted through in-person, telephone, or email correspondence in August 2018. Interview guides constructed around UNICEF's conce

The Upcoming Epidemic of Heart Failure in South Asia.

Currently, South Asia accounts for a quarter of the world population, yet it already claims ≈60% of the global burden of heart disease. Besides the epidemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease already faced by South Asian countries, recent studies suggest that South Asians may also be at an increased risk of heart failure (HF), and that it presents at earlier ages than in most other racial/ethnic groups. Although a frequently underrecognized threat, an eventual HF epidemic in the densely populated South Asian nations could have dramatic health, social and economic consequen
