Modified 3D-printed screwdriver as a rescue innovation for activation of a mandibular external multi-vector distractor.

Device failures during critical medical procedures can jeopardize treatment outcomes. This report documents the innovative use of 3D scanning and resin 3D printing to fabricate a modified screwdriver to achieve effective activation of bilateral mandibular external multi-vector distraction devices on a patient undergoing counterclockwise craniofacial distraction osteogenesis. The modified screwdriver served as a rescue device, as the external midface device obstructed activation of the mandibular external distractors with the manufacturer-supplied activation screwdriver. By designing and fabric

3D-Printed Mucoguide Surgical Template to Increase Predictability in Mucogingival Surgery: Technical Note and Case Report.

Mucogingival surgery is a reliable technique to treat both functional and esthetic issues on teeth. In particular, the treatment success of gingival recessions depends on the flap design, as an inaccurate flap design could lead to surgical failure. For this reason, a new software-guided tool to design and perform mucogingival incisions was proposed. After selecting a flap design in accordance with the mucogingival technique, a template is designed that allows the clinician to guide the mucogingival flap in terms of incision line positions and blade inclination. The guide also incorporated the

Electrochemical quantification of condensed tannins in extracts and herbal medicines using 3D-printed electrodes.

Many herbal medicines contain bioactive polyphenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, and lignans. Assessing the quality of these medicines requires sensitive and selective analytical methods for this class of compounds. However, traditional colorimetric assays like Folin-Ciocalteu and vanillin sulfuric lack specificity since they respond to several classes of phenolics, which may lead to overestimated results. Furthermore, these assays demand extensive sample preparation and specialized infrastructure, limiting their application in rapid or on-site analyses. In this stu

Structure-guided regulation of polysaccharide composite hydrogels by metal ions, nanomaterials, and their synergistic interactions for extrusion-based 3D printing applications.

Natural polysaccharide-based hydrogels have emerged as important material platforms in food science and biomedical research; however, the roles among polymer structure, metal ions, and nanomaterials in determining network formation and printability remain insufficiently understood in an integrated framework. This review systematically examines six representative polysaccharides (chitosan, alginate, starch, pectin, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate), with emphasis on how their different functional groups govern ion-mediated crosslinking, nanomaterial incorporation, and the synergistic re

Multi-Printhead Parallel Printing of Polycaprolactone Barrier/Filler-Integrated Scaffolds for Alveolar Bone Repair.

Most current guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures rely on manual assembly of membranes and filler materials during surgery, which often results in reduced shape fidelity, potential loss or displacement of graft powder, decreased operational efficiency and consistency. Here, we propose a multi-printhead parallel printing strategy for the fabrication of barrier/filler-integrated GBR scaffolds for alveolar bone repair by upgrading a conventional melt extrusion-based printing system with a parallelized 10-printhead module. Compared with conventional single-printhead system, the parallel 10-pr

A Hand-Held Digital Printer for On-Site Fabrication of Micro/Nano Composite Dressings.

Timely management of skin defects requires simultaneous filling of deep tissue defects with a scaffold and coverage of the surface to support tissue repair and barrier protection. However, conventional dressings and dermal substitutes often rely on in vitro prefabrication and secondary application, which are time-consuming and results in suboptimal interfacial integration. In situ printing enables point-of-care fabrication of dressings for early wound care; however, existing hand-held in situ printers typically employ a single fabrication modality, making it difficult to rapidly construct micr

Development and validation of 3D-printed anatomically accurate liver model for endoscopic ultrasound-based endo-hepatology training (with video).

BACKGROUND: Ex vivo endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) training relies on animal tissue, which is anatomically variable, perishable, and requires dedicated endoscopes. As EUS-based liver assessment (EUS-LA)-including parenchymal imaging, shear-wave elastography (SWE), attenuation imaging, and EUS-guided liver biopsy (EUS-LB)-expands, an anatomically accurate, tissue-free training platform could be a valuable educational tool. We developed a synthetic training tool that integrated a gelatin liver and silicone foregut and assessed its validity. METHODS: CT data from a healthy female were extracted to

Insight into Cys and its derivatives metabolism in living system with 3D-printed portable smartphone platform via multifunctional fluorescent probe.

Cysteine (Cys) is a crucial biological thiol that facilitates broad range of biological circumstances and health conditions. Especially the aberrant Cys level in human serum is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. What more, Cys metabolism (Cys to SO2) is typically connected with illnesses such as lung cancer, and are recognized as biomarker. Herein, an innovative multifunctional fluorescent probe was rudimentarily designed and utilized, not only for realizing real-time visualization of the metabolism of Cys to SO2 in tumors through two self-sufficient channels without spect

Plant-based edible emulsion gels from rye secalin for 3D-printed fat mimetics.

Plant proteins are lauded as sustainable proteins for climate control and have been intensively researched as muscle meat mimetics, yet far less attention has been paid to plant-based oil systems for mimicking fat tissues, which is critical in embarking flavor and texture of the meat. Herein, we developed fat mimetics from sunflower oil and secalin, a rye prolamin, which served as both an emulsifier and gelator. The mechanical properties of secalin-based emulsion gels (SEGs) could be fine-tuned by adjusting the ratio of sunflower oil to 70 % ethanol (O:E), acting as templating agent and solven

Rapid and Inexpensive Image-Guided Grayscale Biomaterial Customization via LCD Printing.

Hydrogels are an important class of biomaterials that permit cells to be cultured and studied within engineered microenvironments of user-defined physical and chemical properties. Though conventional 3D extrusion and stereolithographic (SLA) printing readily enable homogeneous and multimaterial hydrogels to be formed with specific macroscopic geometries, strategies that further afford spatiotemporal customization of the underlying gel physicochemistry in a non-discrete manner would be profoundly useful toward recapitulating the complexity of native tissue in vitro. Here, we demonstrate that gr

Nasal Fluid Dynamics Visualization Using Particle Image Velocimetry in a 3D-Printed Nasal Replica Model.

The effectiveness evaluation of nasal drug delivery is heavily dependent on the airflow pattern visualization within the nasal cavity. While traditional methods such as dye filament visualization and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have provided considerable predictions of flow and particle transport within the nasal cavities, however, they lack detailed 3D-flow pattern measurements and face challenges in reliable experimental verification. To fill this research gap, this study develops an innovative experimental platform that combines Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with a 3D-

Application of 3D Printing Technology in Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Neuralgia via Retrosigmoid Craniotomy.

Retrosigmoid craniotomy is the preferred surgical approach for treating cerebellopontine angle (CPA) lesions, particularly for microvascular decompression in primary trigeminal neuralgia. However, inaccurate localization of the transverse-sigmoid sinus junction (TSSJ) often leads to postoperative complications. To address this issue, the E-3D digital medical modeling and design system was employed for preoperative visualization and localization of the TSSJ, enabling precise surgical planning. The E-3D software identified the optimal position for the strategic burr hole, visualized its spatial
