Oral health and dental services in Irish prison populations.

PURPOSE: There is insufficient data on the oral health of those incarcerated in Ireland and oral health is generally poorer in people in prison. The purpose of this study is to investigate and describe the oral health needs of people in prison, patterns of dental care and the outcomes of dental services in Irish prisons. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A retrospective chart review of patient dental records was undertaken from a sample across Ireland. Outcomes included the presence of active decay, reasons for initial presentation and patterns of service use. FINDINGS: The sample totalled 389 in…

Prison Abolition: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis With Implications for Nursing.

AIMS: To clarify the concept of prison abolition in the context of United States mass incarceration and to discuss its implications for nursing ethics, knowledge production, and practice. DESIGN: A critical literature review using Rodger's evolutionary concept analysis. METHODS: We coded and thematically analysed sources to identify associated terms, attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the concept of prison abolition. DATA SOURCES: We searched six databases and a book catalogue between May 2024 and April 2025 to yield a sample of 30 interdisciplinary academic texts. No date limits

Self-harm in prison: moving towards contextual understanding.

BACKGROUND: Rates of self-harm in prisons in England and Wales are historically high. Despite extensive evidence linking self-harm in custody to adversity exposure, psychiatric morbidity, neurodevelopmental conditions, acquired brain injury (ABI), substance misuse, and treatment in prison (including use of solitary confinement and experiences of victimisation), frontline officers frequently characterise self-harm as "manipulative". Framing self-harm as uncontextualized manipulation is associated with more hostile, and less therapeutic responses and may contribute to punitive institutional prac…

Proposed therapy for treating dual diagnosis in a prison setting.

OBJECTIVES: To present a therapeutic tool that combines group and individual therapy, and evaluate its effects on the reduction of substance use, the improvement of negative psychological symptoms, and decrease in conflict among inmates with dual diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a pre-experimental mixed-methods study, conducted in the Mental Health Module of Topas Prison (Salamanca) between 2017 and 2023, involving a total of 54 male inmates, with a maximum of 8 subjects a year. The intervention included 20 group sessions and 5 individual sessions per period. Data were collected throug

Prison Vaccination in a pandemic: Geographic disparities and policy insights.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, carceral communities suffered disproportionate impacts across multiple health indicators despite numerous protective measures. As the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in 2021, many states introduced plans and policies, including prioritization, decarceration, and incentivization, that could increase the vaccination coverage of these vulnerable communities and protect them from further spread. Here, we analyze the geographic distribution of COVID-19 vaccination coverage among incarcerated populations and assess the impact of implemented policies on

The association between health and prison overcrowding, a scoping review.

It is estimated that the majority of prisons globally are overcrowded. There is consensus that overcrowding leads to negative health outcomes, however quantitative research of this association appears limited. This scoping review aimed to identify literature examining the association between prison overcrowding and health outcomes, and to summarize these associations. Two databases and a grey literature site were searched for quantitative studies where overcrowding was an independent variable, and the outcome was any physical or mental health issue. This yielded 34 records from 16 mostly high-…

Neural mechanisms of cooperation and fairness in iterative prisoner's dilemma.

Cooperation is a universal human principle reflecting working with others to achieve common goals. The rational decision-making model contends that cooperation is the best strategy for maximizing benefits in an iterative prisoner's dilemma. However, the motivations for cooperation (or betrayal) are complex and diverse, and often include fairness reflections. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study underlying neural differences in brain regions related to fairness when people interact with an opponent who tend to cooperate or betray, at different decision-making st

Racism and violence in policing: Perspectives from a juvenile prison.

Following recent events involving racism and violence in policing, the current study sought to understand factors associated with support for related social movements and worries about personal, family, and peer safety. Data were from 78 currently incarcerated young people (M = 16.5 years; 31% Black) and 20 juvenile prison staff (M = 40.3 years; 72% Black) via online surveys. A comparable proportion of young people (47.3%) and staff (47.4%) reported participating in the Black Lives Matter movement. Among young people, prior experiences with police were significantly associated with support for

Effectiveness of Systematic Screening and Treatment of Tuberculosis in Prison in Thailand.

The global incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in prison is 5 to 70 times greater than that in the general population. The systematic screening and treatment of TB in prison benefit TB control and treatment outcomes. However, no study has supported this in Thailand. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of long-term, continuous, systematic screening for TB control. We conducted a retrospective study in Suratthani Central Prison, Thailand, using annual TB screening from 2016 to 2020. A positive TB screening was defined as having any TB symptoms or chest radiography abnormality. We collected sputum sm

Prisoners' experience of health self-management: A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Among the noninstitutionalized population, health care is increasingly shifting from a paternalistic model toward promoting patients' involvement in decision-making and in managing their condition. This paradigm shift toward health self-management is less applicable to individuals in prison whose health management choices are limited. The aim of this study was to explore prisoners' health self-management needs and the strategies used to maintain health self-management in a highly restrictive prison environment. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenological study design was selected for this

Terror and Crime: Anatomy of an Austrian Jihadist Prison Cohort.

Between 2014 and 2018 there was an unprecedented wave of jihadist terrorist activity in Austria that was mostly related to the "Islamic state." Meanwhile, many individuals have been or are gradually being released from prison. While many were able to disengage, two prevented and sentenced foreign fighters planned attacks in Vienna, one of them succeeded. In order to better understand this type of perpetrator, files of a cohort of 56 convicted jihadist terrorist offenders were analyzed. Half of this cohort were foreign fighters or attempted to become foreign fighters, while others contributed f

Forgotten and without Protections: Older Adults in Prison Settings.

The number of older adults incarcerated in prisons is growing significantly, and there is a great need for legal authority, processes, and resources to mitigate individual and social burdens of elder neglect and abuse within these settings. Older adults in prison may be particularly vulnerable to abuse, neglect, or exploitation. They are dependent on the carceral system for basic resources, are at risk for retaliatory actions for reporting mistreatment, and bear disproportionately high health burdens. This essay first considers standards and resources for mitigating elder mistreatment in the c…

Methamphetamine poisoning due to body packer swallowing in a prisoner.

Individuals who introduce illicit substances such as opioids and amphetamines into the gastrointestinal tract by swallowing or inserting them into the rectum are known as body packers. We describe a prisoner who developed severe poisoning symptoms after swallowing amphetamine packets and was promptly removed by laparotomy.

A Global View of Women, Prison, and Aftercare: A Call for Reform.

Ending violence against women-part of the priority theme of the CSW65-is an international human rights issue. We must prevent and combat violence against all women, including those who are incarcerated worldwide. Incarcerated women are among the most marginalized populations; they have suffered numerous victimizations without ever seeing their perpetrators brought to justice. Though most incarcerated women have committed non-violent offenses, they are locked away in prisons, far away from their loved ones, and subject to inhumane conditions. According to international human rights law, prevent…
