Sit-to-stand manoeuvre in hemiparetic patients before and after a 4-week rehabilitation programme.

The objective of the study was to document the sit-to-stand of 35 moderately affected hemiparetic patients before and after a 4-week inpatient rehabilitation programme and to investigate the influence of the side of hemiparesis and impaired proprioception on its outcome. The therapists trained the patients to distribute equal weight on both legs and to avoid lateral compensatory tilt of the trunk. The body weight distribution and the displacement of the centre of mass in the frontal plane were studied by assessment of triaxial ground reaction forces. Symmetrical weight acceptance and minimal l…

Sensory integration dysfunction in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Insights from a clinical balance assessment using the m-CTSIB.

Sensory integration dysfunction contributes to postural instability, particularly in conditions challenging vestibular and proprioceptive processing. This study evaluated balance function in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (m-CTSIB).A cross-sectional study was conducted with 80 participants (40 AIS, 40 controls), assessing postural stability under various sensory conditions, including a novel foam-surface, eyes-closed, head-movement condition designed to challenge vestibular function. AIS patients exhibited significantly

The Superior Parietal Lobule of Macaque Monkey: Relative Influence of Gaze and Static Arm Position during Reaching.

The superior parietal lobule (SPL) integrates somatosensory, motor, and visual signals to dynamically control arm movements. During reaching, visual and gaze signals are used to guide the hand to the desired target location, while proprioceptive signals allow to correct arm trajectory, and keep the limb in the final position at the end of the movement. Three SPL areas are particularly involved in this process: V6A, PEc, PE. Here, we evaluated the influence of eye and arm position on single neuron activity of these areas during the holding period at the end of arm reaching movements, when the a

[Segmental and somatic dysfunction : How does manual medicine work?].

BACKGROUND: Manual medicine is based on neurophysiologic and biomechanical principles. Impaired senso-motor regulation causes segmental and somatic dysfunction. Via segmental mapping, somato-sensory and vegetative dysfunction arises. Local pain, referred pain, and vague symptoms can occur in the thoracic and abdominal regions. Myofascial structures can transfer these dysfunctions to other body areas, where segmental neuronal connections lead to further dysfunction. Manual medicine addresses these aspects. TECHNIQUES: Manual interventions work by influencing the proprioceptive system, improvin

[Parietal Cortices and Body Information].

Proprioceptive signals originating from skeletal muscles and joints contribute to the formation of both the human body schema and the body image. In this chapter, we introduce various types of bodily illusions that are elicited by proprioceptive inputs, and we discuss distinct functions implemented by different parietal cortices. First, we illustrate the primary importance of the motor network in the processing of proprioceptive (kinesthetic) signals originating from muscle spindles. Next, we argue that the right inferior parietal cortex, in concert with the inferior frontal cortex (both regio

Analysis of Neuromuscular Control and Sensory and Psychological Anxiety Affecting Shock Absorption Capacity in Patients After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Patients who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery are at high risk of re-injury and osteoarthritis due to increased impact during landing. The characteristics of patients after reconstruction surgery include significant co-contraction of the knee joint antagonistic muscles, decreased proprioception of the knee joint, and psychological anxiety. However, it is unclear whether these factors are related to shock absorption capacity during landing. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether neuromuscular control and sensory and psychological a…

Somatosensory evoked potentials after posterior tibial nerve stimulation in focal spinal cord diseases.

We investigated the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) produced by posterior tibial nerve (PTN) stimulation in 8 infants and children with focal spinal cord disorders. The spinal responses of the PTN-SEPs were considered to assist in the localization of spinal lesions because their abnormalities were consistent with the neurologic and/or radiologic findings in all 6 examinations that revealed abnormal spinal SEPs. The cortical responses correlated significantly with proprioception in the lower limbs because proprioception was only disturbed when the cortical SEPs were absent (3 examination…

Hand Ownership Is Altered in Teenagers with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy.

We explored hand ownership in teenagers with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) compared with typically developing teenagers. Eighteen participants with UCP and 16 control teenagers participated. We used the rubber hand illusion to test hand ownership (HO). Both affected/non-affected hands (UCP) and dominant/non-dominant hands (controls) were tested during synchronous and asynchronous strokes. HO was assessed by measuring the proprioceptive drift toward the fake hand (as a percentage of arm length) and conducting a questionnaire on subjective HO. Both groups had significantly higher proprioceptiv

The use of a neoprene knee sleeve to compensate the deficit in knee joint position sense caused by muscle fatigue.

The importance of good proprioceptive abilities is stressed in many rehabilitation protocols. In contrast, it has been shown that muscle fatigue has a negative influence on proprioception. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a neoprene knee sleeve (NKS) on the joint position sense in a fatigued knee joint. Sixty-four healthy subjects underwent four successive assessments of the same active joint repositioning test (AJRT) in an open kinetic chain setting under different conditions. First, each subject performed the AJRT without brace. One knee was braced during the second…

Examining the physical and psychological effects of combining multimodal feedback with continuous control in prosthetic hands.

Myoelectric prosthetic hands are typically controlled to move between discrete positions and do not provide sensory feedback to the user. In this work, we present and evaluate a closed-loop, continuous myoelectric prosthetic hand controller, that can continuously control the position of multiple degrees of freedom of a prosthesis while rendering proprioceptive feedback to the user via a haptic feedback armband. Twenty-eight participants without and ten participants with upper limb difference (ULD) were recruited to holistically evaluate the physical and psychological effects of the controller

The ups and downs of motion sickness.

Nearly everyone will experience motion sickness at some point. It's thought to be caused by confusion among the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems; the associated nausea is thought to involve neurons in the hypothalamus and a portion of the cerebral cortex. Although many remedies are available, none has been proven to be effective for everyone. Pharma cologic treatments include antihistamines, scopolamine, and gingerroot. Nonpharmacologic treatments include efforts to control gastric motility, such as wearing a wristband that stimulates the P6 acupressure point, and efforts to affe

Alien limb following posterior cerebral artery stroke: failure to recognize internally generated movements?

We describe two rare cases of alien limb syndrome following right posterior cerebral artery (PCA) stroke. Both patients present with left hemianopia, visual neglect and proprioceptive loss in addition to their alien limb symptoms. Lesion subtraction from seven control PCA patients revealed that medial parietal-occipital and thalamic areas were selectively damaged in the alien limb patients. We propose that loss of the sense of motor intention and internal model of the current state of the arm, combined with deficient proprioceptive and visual feedback of the moving limb, are critical for genes
