Beyond viral suppression: determinants of health-related quality of life in a national HIV cohort in Turkiye.

This multicentre study evaluated Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and identified sociodemographic and clinical determinants of physical and mental health outcomes in a large national HIV cohort in Turkiye. This cross-sectional study included 1303 adults across 23 centres. HRQoL was assessed using the Turkish MOS-HIV Health Survey, yielding Physical Health Summary (PHSS) and Mental Health Summary (MHSS) scores. HRQoL scores were dichotomised into "higher" (>50) and "lower" (≤50) groups. Data were analysed via univariate tests and multivariable logistic regression. Participants (88.6% male

Transdiagnostic effects of combined sleep-circadian interventions on depressive symptoms and sleep outcomes in adults with mental disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbance and circadian rhythm dysregulation are common in mental disorders and may contribute to depressive symptoms and functional impairment. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the impact of non-pharmacological interventions targeting sleep and circadian rhythms on depressive symptoms and sleep-related outcomes in adults experiencing mental disorders. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across several databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang, covering the period from their inception until A

Effects of aerobic exercise on cognitive performance and individual psychopathology in depressive and schizophrenia patients.

Cognitive deficits are core symptoms in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD), but specific and approved treatments for cognitive deterioration are scarce. Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that aerobic exercise may help to reduce psychopathological symptoms and support cognitive performance, but this has not yet been systematically investigated. In the current study, we examined the effects of aerobic training on cognitive performance and symptom severity in psychiatric inpatients. To our knowledge, to date, no studies have been published that directly

The adverse event profile of pregabalin: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

PURPOSE: Despite the widespread use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) across different neurologic and psychiatric disorders, no study has systematically reviewed all available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of a given AED to fully uncover its tolerability profile. We aimed at identifying treatment emergent adverse events (AEs) associated with pregabalin through a systematic review and meta-analysis of all available RCTs. We also assessed the association between serious AEs and pregabalin, and investigated whether pregabalin AEs display a dose-response relationship. METHODS: We searched MEDLI

A feminist analysis of the theories of etiology of depression in women.

Women in the United States are more likely to be hospitalized for depression than be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, despite the continued underrecognition and underdiagnosis of depression. According to the DSM-IV, unipolar depression is a severe mood disorder characterized by a loss of pleasure in most activities, along with one or a combination of associated symptoms. Women between the ages of 20 and 45 are most prone to depression, with the incidence declining as they age. The likelihood of a correct diagnosis and the method of treatment of depression, as is true for oth

Exploring the impact of the adaptive disclosure technique on reducing the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in veterans: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents significant mental health challenges for veterans, leading to substantial physical, cognitive, and psychological difficulties, including heightened risks of social issues and suicidal ideation. Adaptive Disclosure (AD) is a novel, emotion-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach developed by the military for combat-related PTSD. This technique involves exposure therapy and an empty-chair technique, allowing patients to verbalize unresolved issues. Despite its short, six-session duration, AD appears well-tolerated and effecti

Cumulative anticholinergic burden is associated with lower clozapine metabolic ratios: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine is the most effective treatment for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, yet substantial interindividual variability in serum concentrations complicates dose optimization and therapeutic drug monitoring. While factors such as smoking and inflammation are known to influence clozapine metabolism, a substantial portion of the variability remains unexplained. Anticholinergic burden, reflecting cumulative exposure to anticholinergic medications, may be a clinically relevant yet underexplored factor associated with pharmacokinetic variability. METHODS: This retrospective cross-s

Examination of the enrichment of neuronal extracellular vesicles from cell conditioned media and human plasma using an anti-NCAM immunocapture bead approach.

BACKGROUND: The isolation of neuron-derived extracellular vesicles (nEVs) from biofluids offers the potential to discover novel biomarkers to aid in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. A few studies have used anti-NCAM antibody-bead-based immunocapture to enrich nEVs from plasma, some with little method validation. We therefore examined in detail this method for nEV enrichment. METHODS: EVs were isolated from SH-SY5Y cell-conditioned media by precipitation, or from plasma using size exclusion chromatography. EVs were characterised using nanoparticle tracking

A double burden: depression and early pain recurrence following surgical management of trigeminal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by recurrent, unilateral episodes of electric shock-like facial pain, frequently triggered by routine activities, that can significantly impair quality of life. Although interventions such as microvascular decompression, stereotactic radiosurgery, and minimally invasive percutaneous procedures often provide rapid pain relief, recurrence remains a clinical challenge. Psychological comorbidities, particularly depressive disorder, may play a role in predicting outcomes after surgical intervention. This study aimed to determine whether a preexi

Disparity in Risk of Readmission in Adult Burn Patients: Analysis of a Nationwide Readmission Database.

INTRODUCTION: Burn injuries remain a significant cause of disability, impacting long term quality-of-life and imposing large costs on our health systems. Readmission is a metric of quality and an important contributor to this economic burden. The association of socioeconomic and insurance status with burn readmission is not well established. The aim of our study is to develop a predictive risk model of factors associated with readmission after burns. METHODS: Using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's 2018 Nationwide Readmission Database, we identified patients ≥18 y of age with burn

Pattern of ventral temporal lobe interconnections in rhesus macaques.

The entorhinal cortex (EC, A28) is linked through reciprocal pathways with nearby perirhinal and visual, auditory, and multimodal association cortices in the temporal lobe, in pathways associated with the flow of information for memory processing. The density and laminar organization of these pathways is not well understood in primates. We studied interconnections within the ventral temporal lobe in young adult rhesus monkeys of both sexes with the aid of neural tracers injected in temporal areas (Ts1, Ts2, TE1, area 36, temporal polar area TPro, and area 28) to determine the density and lamin

Imbalance of multiple neurotransmitter pathways leading to depression-like behavior and cognitive dysfunction in the triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer disease.

Depression is among the most frequent psychiatric comorbid conditions in Alzheimer disease (AD). However, pharmacotherapy for depressive disorders in AD is still a big challenge, and the data on the efffcacy of current antidepressants used clinically for depressive symptoms in patients with AD remain inconclusive. Here we investigated the mechanism of the interactions between depression and AD, which we believe would aid in the development of pharmacological therapeutics for the comorbidity of depression and AD. Female APP/PS1/Tau triple transgenic (3×Tg-AD) mice at 24 months of age and age- a

A Systematic Review of Interventions for Prevention and Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Childbirth.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum women can develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in response to complicated, traumatic childbirth; prevalence of these events remains high in the U.S. Currently, there is no recommended treatment approach in routine peripartum care for preventing maternal childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD) and lessening its severity. Here, we provide a systematic review of available clinical trials testing interventions for the prevention and indication of CB-PTSD. DATA SOURCES: We conducted a systematic review of PsycInfo, PsycArticles, PubMed (MEDLINE), ClinicalTrials.gov, CINAHL

Predicting treatment response to cognitive behavioral therapy in panic disorder with agoraphobia by integrating local neural information.

IMPORTANCE: Although neuroimaging research has made substantial progress in identifying the large-scale neural substrate of anxiety disorders, its value for clinical application lags behind expectations. Machine-learning approaches have predictive potential for individual-patient prognostic purposes and might thus aid translational efforts in psychiatric research. OBJECTIVE: To predict treatment response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on an individual-patient level based on functional magnetic resonance imaging data in patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia (PD/AG). Astrocytes generated from patient induced pluripotent stem cells recapitulate features of Huntington's disease patient cells.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's Disease (HD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder that clinically manifests as motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms. There is currently no cure for this progressive and fatal disorder. The causative mutation of this hereditary disease is a trinucleotide repeat expansion (CAG) in the Huntingtin gene that results in an expanded polyglutamine tract. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain the preferential striatal and cortical degeneration that occurs with HD, including non-cell-autonomous contribution from astrocytes. Although

Electronic monitoring in medication adherence measurement. Implications for dermatology.

Poor adherence with prescribed therapy often results in decreased efficacy, annoying for patient both and physician. Negative health improvement adds extensive costs to the healthcare system. Thus, physicians need to carefully examine medication adherence before investigating possible pharmacologic reasons for drug failure or initiating alternative treatments and special diagnostic tests. Documenting medication adherence can also help with the development of new drugs and establishing optimized treatment regimens. Reliable distinction between non-adherence and nonresponse is a new issue for me
