Blur limits for defocus, astigmatism and trefoil.

We investigated the limits at which blur due to defocus, crossed-cylinder astigmatism, and trefoil became noticeable, troublesome or objectionable. Black letter targets (0.1, 0.35 and 0.6 logMAR) were presented on white backgrounds. Subjects were cyclopleged and had effectively 5mm pupils. Blur was induced with a deformable, adaptive-optics mirror operating under open-loop conditions. Mean defocus blur limits of six subjects with uncorrected intrinsic higher-order ocular aberrations ranged from 0.18+/-0.08 D (noticeable blur criterion, 0.1 logMAR) to 1.01+/-0.27 D (objectionable blur criterion

Brain plasticity in the adult: modulation of function in amblyopia with rTMS.

Amblyopia is a cortically based visual disorder caused by disruption of vision during a critical early developmental period. It is often thought to be a largely intractable problem in adult patients because of a lack of neuronal plasticity after this critical period [1]; however, recent advances have suggested that plasticity is still present in the adult amblyopic visual cortex [2-6]. Here, we present data showing that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the visual cortex can temporarily improve contrast sensitivity in the amblyopic visual cortex. The results indicate conti

Second-order motion shifts perceived position.

Many studies have documented that first-order motion influences perceived position. Here, we show that second-order (contrast defined) motion influences the perceived positions of stationary objects as well. We used a Gabor pattern as our second-order stimulus, which consisted of a drifting sinusoidal contrast modulation of a dynamic random-dot background; this second-order carrier was enveloped by a static Gaussian contrast modulation. Two vertically aligned Gabors had carrier motion in opposite directions. Subjects judged the relative positions of the Gabors' static envelopes. The positions

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of early visual pathways in dyslexia.

We measured brain activity, perceptual thresholds, and reading performance in a group of dyslexic and normal readers to test the hypothesis that dyslexia is associated with an abnormality in the magnocellular (M) pathway of the early visual system. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure brain activity in conditions designed to preferentially stimulate the M pathway. Speed discrimination thresholds, which measure the minimal increase in stimulus speed that is just noticeable, were acquired in a paradigm modeled after a previous study of M pathway-lesioned monkeys. Dysl

Secondary hyperalgesia to mechanical but not heat stimuli following a capsaicin injection in hairy skin.

A psychophysical investigation was carried out to examine whether heat hyperalgesia exists within the secondary mechanical hyperalgesia zone surrounding a capsaicin injection site on hairy skin. A non-contact laser stimulator was used to deliver temperature controlled stimuli to sites within and outside the zone of mechanical hyperalgesia. Heat testing was carried out before and after the intradermal injection of 50 micrograms of capsaicin into the volar forearm. The zones of mechanical hyperalgesia to punctate and stroking stimuli and the region of flare were also mapped after the capsaicin i

Signal-detection analysis of the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions.

Perceptual error in the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions was quantified using nonparametric signal-detection measures of sensitivity and response bias. Sensitivity scores were positively related to signal strength with the greatest values observed for the strongest signals. Sensitivity at each signal strength did not differ between the two illusions. Response-bias scores were inversely related to signal strength, with the most conservative biases observed for the strongest signals. Response biases for each signal strength were significantly more conservative for the Horizontal

Perceiver bias in the processing of human faces: neuropsychological mechanisms.

Previous research has suggested that in face-to-face contexts perceivers are biased to judge the side of the poser's face to their left as more similar to the full face than the side to their right. Traditional explanations of the perceiver bias have presumed that it is a visual field effect, with the side of the poser's face falling within the perceiver's left visual field dominating impressions of the full face. In this study, five experiments are reported. In the first experiment, the validity of the perceiver bias phenomenon was supported. The remaining experiments examined three alternati

[Critical flicker fusion frequency in man during exposure to noise].

The critical frequency of flicker fusion in the central and four peripheral points of the retina was investigated in 12 test subjects during and after one hour exposure to wide-band noise of 95 dBA. The subjects showed two types of response: three displayed an increase and nine a decrease of the flicker fusion critical frequency as compared to the control level. The changes showed individual variations. No correlation was found between the sign of changes in the parameter and its pretest level or the retinal site of registration.

The time course of different surround suppression mechanisms.

What we see depends on the spatial context in which it appears. Previous work has linked the suppression of perceived contrast by surrounding stimuli to reduced neural responses in early visual cortex. This surround suppression depends on at least two separable neural mechanisms, "low-level" and "higher level," which can be differentiated by their response characteristics. We used electroencephalography to demonstrate for the first time that human occipital neural responses show evidence of these two suppression mechanisms. Eighteen adults (10 women, 8 men) each participated in three experimen

Typical numerosity adaptation despite selectively impaired number acuity in dyscalculia.

It has been suggested that a core deficit of the "number sense" may underlie dyscalculia. We test this idea by measuring perceptual adaptation and discrimination thresholds for numerosity and object size in a group of dyscalculic and typical preadolescents (N = 71, mean age 12). We confirmed that numerosity discrimination thresholds are higher in developmental dyscalculia, while size thresholds are not affected. However, dyscalculics adapted to numerosity in a similar way to typicals. This suggests that although numerosity thresholds are selectively higher in dyscalculia, the mechanisms for pe

Motion perception deficit in Down Syndrome.

It is a well established fact that Down Syndrome (DS) individuals have a tendency to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Lott, I.T., Head, E., 2005. Alzheimer disease and Down syndrome: factors in pathogenesis. Neurobiol. Aging 26, 383-389). They have therefore been proposed as a model to study the pre-dementia stage of Alzheimer's (Mann, D.M., 1988. The pathological association between Down syndrome and Alzheimer disease. Mech. Ageing Dev. 43, 99-136). One of the specific deficits exhibited by AD patients is optic flow motion perception (Tetewsky, S.J., Duffy, C.J., 1999. Visual loss and gettin

Context-dependent sequential effects of target selection for action.

Humans exhibit variation in behavior from moment to moment even when performing a simple, repetitive task. Errors are typically followed by cautious responses, minimizing subsequent distractor interference. However, less is known about how variation in the execution of an ultimately correct response affects subsequent behavior. We asked participants to reach toward a uniquely colored target presented among distractors and created two categories to describe participants' responses in correct trials based on analyses of movement trajectories; partial errors referred to trials in which observers

The flash grab effect.

When an object moves back and forth, its trajectory appears significantly shorter than it actually is. The object appears to stop and reverse well before its actual reversal point, as if there is some averaging of location within a window of about 100 ms (Sinico et al., 2009). Surprisingly, if a bar is flashed at the physical end point of the trajectory, right on top of the object, just as it reverses direction, the flash is also shifted - grabbed by the object - and is seen at the perceived endpoint of the trajectory rather than the physical endpoint. This can shift the perceived location of

Response normalization and blur adaptation: data and multi-scale model.

Adapting to blurred or sharpened images alters perceived blur of a focused image (M. A. Webster, M. A. Georgeson, & S. M. Webster, 2002). We asked whether blur adaptation results in (a) renormalization of perceived focus or (b) a repulsion aftereffect. Images were checkerboards or 2-D Gaussian noise, whose amplitude spectra had (log-log) slopes from -2 (strongly blurred) to 0 (strongly sharpened). Observers adjusted the spectral slope of a comparison image to match different test slopes after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images. Results did not show repulsion effects but were consistent

Influence of optical defocus on peripheral vision.

PURPOSE: Peripheral optical corrections are often thought to give few visual benefits beyond improved detection acuity. However, patients with central visual field loss seem to benefit from peripheral correction, and animal studies suggest a role for peripheral vision in the development of myopia. This study was conducted to bridge this gap by systematically studying the sensitivity to optical defocus in a wide range of peripheral visual tasks. METHODS: The spatial frequency threshold for detection and resolution in high and low contrast with stationary and drifting gratings were measured off

Initial destination of the disaccommodation step response.

Peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation step responses remain invariant of response magnitude for a constant starting position and they increase linearly with proximity of starting position. This suggests that disaccommodation response is initiated towards an initial (default) destination and is switched mid-flight to attain the desired final destination. The dioptric location of initial destination was estimated from the x-intercept of regression of peak velocity on response starting position. The x-intercept correlated well with subject's cycloplegic refractive state and poor

Cortical locus of coherent motion deficits in deaf poor readers.

Samar and Parasnis [Samar, V. J., & Parasnis, I. (2005). Dorsal stream deficits suggest hidden dyslexia among deaf poor readers: correlated evidence from reduced perceptual speed and elevated coherent motion detection thresholds. Brain and Cognition, 58, 300-311.] reported that correlated measures of coherent motion detection and perceptual speed predicted reading comprehension in deaf young adults. Because deficits in coherent motion detection have been associated with dyslexia in the hearing population, and because coherent motion detection is strongly dependent on extrastriate cortical area

The effects of different aperture-viewing conditions on the recognition of novel objects.

The process of learning the structure of novel objects involves the selective use of information available in the distal stimulus. By allowing participants to explore the object within a limited field of view, we were able to examine more rigorously what regions of the object are actually selected in the learning process. Participants explored objects either by moving a circular aperture over a stationary novel object (the aperture-movement condition), or by moving the object behind a stationary aperture (the object-movement condition). Given the differences in how the spatial layout of object

Head-centred motion perception in the ageing visual system.

Stationary objects appear to move in the opposite direction to a pursuit eye movement (Filehne illusion) and moving objects appear slower when pursued (Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon). Both illusions imply that extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals lead to lower estimates of speed than corresponding retinal motion signals. Intriguingly, the velocity (i.e. speed and direction) of the Filehne illusion depends on the age of the observer, especially for brief display durations (Wertheim and Bekkering, 1992). This suggests relative signal size changes as the visual system matures. To test the signal-size
