Treatment in Children and Adolescents With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Review for Practitioners.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most debilitating mental health conditions, interrupting functioning at school and social well-being in children and adolescents. Youth tend to delay interventions and when sought, response to treatment might not be optimal. The current article discusses treatment guidelines for youth with OCD and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric symptoms. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, 61(8), 11-15.].

Prevalence & predictors of sexual functioning & sex hormone profiles among men with opioid dependence: A community-based, cross-sectional study.

Background & objectives Though sexual dysfunction are common in individuals with opioid dependence, the relative contribution of hormonal and psychological determinants remains unclear. Studies assessing sexual functioning and sex hormone levels together in this population remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate self-reported sexual dysfunction and sex hormone alterations, and their association with demographic, psychosocial, and hormonal factors in men with opioid dependence, primarily using heroin. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 143 sexually active males (aged 18-50 yr) with opi

Health-related quality of life in patients with pediatric onset of end-stage renal disease: state of the art and recommendations for clinical practice.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is increasingly recognized as a key outcome in both clinical and research settings in the pediatric population with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This review aims to: (1) summarize the current knowledge on HRQoL and socioprofessional outcomes and (2) provide strategies for incorporation of HRQoL assessment into clinical practice. Studies report that pediatric patients with ESRD have significantly lower HRQoL scores compared with children with other chronic diseases. Patients treated by dialysis are at particularly high risk for impaired HRQoL. Furthermo

Gender differences in the interference of sleep difficulties and daytime sleepiness on school and social activities in adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: During adolescence, changes in the circadian and homeostatic systems, combined with psychosocial factors, create a phase delay in the sleep of adolescents. These changes in sleep are associated with increased sleep difficulties and a shortened sleep duration, which has a negative impact on daytime functioning of adolescents. Some studies showed that teenage girls report worse sleep quality and shorter sleep duration than boys during adolescence. The objective of this study was to investigate gender differences in the impact of sleep difficulties and sleepiness on daytime functionin

Changes in brain functional networks in remitted major depressive disorder: a six-month follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with remitted major depressive disorder (rMDD) show abnormal functional connectivity of the central executive network (CEN), salience networks (SN) and default mode network (DMN). It is unclear how these change during remission, or whether changes are related to function. METHODS: Three spatial networks in 17 patients with rMDD were compared between baseline and the six-month follow-up, and to 22 healthy controls. Correlations between these changes and psychosocial functioning were also assessed. RESULTS: In the CEN, patients at baseline had abnormal functional connectiv…

Treatment resistant schizophrenia is associated with the worst community functioning among severely-ill highly-disabling psychiatric conditions and is the most relevant predictor of poorer achievements in functional milestones.

The aim of this work was to compare achievements in milestones of community functioning in highly disabling psychiatric conditions, including treatment resistant schizophrenia (TRS), schizophrenia (responsive to antipsychotics), bipolar disorder, and anxiety/depressive diseases. Also, we investigated the predictors of community functioning outcomes across several domains. Among consecutive patients screened, 188 met inclusion criteria and 118 ultimately entered the study. Diagnosis of TRS was made by stringent criteria, including historic and perspective evaluations and excluding potential con

The Health-Related Quality of Life of German Desmoid Patients: Results from the PROSa-DES and PROSa Study.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DT) is a rare, locally aggressive soft tissue tumor with a frequently chronic course and substantial impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). While international studies have demonstrated considerable symptom burden and psychosocial impairment, data from Germany are lacking. This study aimed to assess HRQoL in German patients and to identify factors associated with HRQoL. In this cross-sectional analysis, adult patients with histologically confirmed DT completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the disease-specific Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis Quality of Life Questionnair

Heightened sensitivity to the caregiving environment during adolescence: implications for recovery following early-life adversity.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence has been proposed to be a period of heightened sensitivity to environmental influence. If true, adolescence may present a window of opportunity for recovery for children exposed to early-life adversity. Recent evidence supports adolescent recalibration of stress response systems following early-life adversity. However, it is unknown whether similar recovery occurs in other domains of functioning in adolescence. METHODS: We use data from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project - a randomized controlled trial of foster care for children raised in psychosocially deprivin
