Homonymous visual field defects are rare in patients with MS and are usually caused by large lesions in the white matter of the posterior optic radiations and visual cortex. The postulate of Holmes and others, early this century, that optic radiation lesions could produce quadrantic defects has recently been questioned. We report the full recovery of a patient with probable MS who presented with congruous quadrantanopia from a small white matter lesion in the contralateral trigone area.

The management of 14 cases of radiation injury to the intestinal tract over a 4-year period is evaluated. The longest latent interval between radiation treatment and symptoms was 30 years. Chemodectomas of carotid artery bifurcation are generally managed with surgery, irradiation being reserved for inoperable, bulky, and recurrent tumors. Probably due to this "pretreatment" selection of patients, chemodectomas are anedoctally considered radioresistant tumors, although this concept is not supported by the recent literature. Post-irradiation cerebral pathologies may appear in various forms from localized radiation necrosis to a plurifocal type or from local to diffuse vasculopathies. Contrary to the current prevalent opinion, these lesions are not rare in children since young nerve tissue is particularly sensitive to ionizing radiation. Given the seriousness of some of these lesions, the authors recommend careful evaluation of the risk involved in relation to the real necessity of administering irradiation therapy in childhood.

The data on 216 cases of cancer of the thoracic part of the esophagus treated by radiation are presented. The course of treatment was completed in 169 patients only. Two modalities of Co-60 teletherapy were employed. Complete regression of tumor was slightly more frequent in patients who were exposed to split-course radiation at two weeks' intervals than in those receiving a continuous course (22 +/- 4 and 33 +/- 6%, respectively). A five-year disease-free survival after a full course totalling a NSD of 60-70 Gy was registered in 14%.

Between 1960 and 1979, 41 patients with adenocarcinoma of the endometrium who were poor surgical risks were treated with radiation therapy at the University of Iowa. Local tumor control was achieved in 78% of the patients, 5% manifested complications, and 46% survived 5 years ("uncorrected" 5-year survival rate).
