In utero exposure to low-doses of ionizing radiation decelerates neuronal migration in the developing rat brain.

In order to elucidate the possible mechanisms for the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation on the developing rat cerebral cortex we studied how neuronal migration can be affected by prenatal in utero irradiation. We have demonstrated an effect of ionizing radiation on neuronal migration at doses as low as 15 cGy together with a changing pattern of expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM. After a dose of 15 cGy or more there was a reduction in N-CAM immunoreactivity in the matrix cell zone which became apparent about 24 h after exposure and continued until 48 h after exposur

[The correction of free-radical oxidation processes in patients with chronic cholecystitis subjected to ionizing radiation exposure].

An activation was found of lipid peroxidation system as well as suppression of antioxidant defence tending to be more profound in blood erythrocytes, in 47 patients with chronic cholecystitis having been in the zone of abnormal radiation. Correction of the above alterations revealed unithiol, clinical and biochemical effects to be pronounced compare with those or tocopherol. Direct antioxidant effect or unithiol, its capability of serving as an antidote of heavy of heavy metals are believed to account for the above observation.

G2/M-phase arrest and release in ataxia telangiectasia and normal cells after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Cells from patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) are abnormal in their response to irradiation as judged by clonogenic survival and accumulation in G2 phase. The relationship of the results of these two assays, however, is still a matter of controversy. Flow cytometry was used to measure the distribution of cells in the phases of the cell cycle after 2 Gy irradiation in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) and SV40-transformed fibroblasts. AT cells showed increased and prolonged accumulation in G2/M phase regardless of the cell type (lymphoblastoid or fibrob

Increased expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor in human epidermal keratinocytes after exposure to ionizing radiation.

The effect of exposure of human epidermal keratinocytes to ionizing radiation, both in vivo and in vitro, on the expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) was studied on the protein, mRNA, and functional levels. Quantitative fluorometry of short-term organ cultures incubated with a monoclonal antibody against human EGF-R revealed a dose-dependent increase of EGF-R expression 24 h after irradiation with 4 and 6 Gy, with an additional increase after 48 h. In biopsy specimens from patients undergoing radiation therapy a markedly increased expression could be determined by quantit

Lack of adaptive response to low doses of ionizing radiation in human lymphocytes from five different donors.

Various investigators reported a reduced yield of chromosome and chromatid aberrations in short-term cultures of human lymphocytes if a 'challenge' exposure to ionizing radiation was preceded by an 'adaptive' exposure. In order to examine the cell cycle dependence of the 'adaptive response', chromosome and chromatid aberration yields were estimated after challenge doses in the G1, S or G2 phase of lymphocytes which had been adapted in the early G1 phase. On testing two donors no protective adaptive response was found. Blood samples of four donors were tested for their capability to evoke the a

Non-targeted and delayed effects of exposure to ionizing radiation: II. Radiation-induced genomic instability and bystander effects in vivo, clastogenic factors and transgenerational effects.

The goal of this review is to summarize the evidence for non-targeted and delayed effects of exposure to ionizing radiation in vivo. Currently, human health risks associated with radiation exposures are based primarily on the assumption that the detrimental effects of radiation occur in irradiated cells. Over the years a number of non-targeted effects of radiation exposure in vivo have been described that challenge this concept. These include radiation-induced genomic instability, bystander effects, clastogenic factors produced in plasma from irradiated individuals that can cause chromosomal d

LEVELS OF EXPOSURE TO IONIZING RADIATION AMONG THE PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN CYCLOTRON OPERATION AND THE PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN THE PRODUCTION OF RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS, BASED ON RADIATION MONITORING SYSTEM.

This paper aims to determine the levels of exposure to neutron and photon radiation among the personnel engaged in cyclotron operation and the personnel engaged in the production of radiopharmaceuticals, with the use of the environmental radiation monitoring system (RMS) installed in the positron emission tomography laboratory. The annual exposures of employees operating the cyclotron measured with the use of the RMS system are: 1.39 ± 0.16 mSv in case of photon radiation and 2.61 ± 0.14 mSv in case of neutron radiation. In the case of employees in the radiopharmaceuticals' production zone, th

Reflections on the impact of advances in the assessment of genetic risks of exposure to ionizing radiation on international radiation protection recommendations between the mid-1950s and the present.

Efforts at protecting people against the harmful effects of radiation had their beginnings in the early 1900s with the intent of protecting individuals in medicine and associated professions. Such efforts remain vital for all of us more than 100 years later as part of our 'learning to live with ionizing radiation.' The field of radiation protection has evolved slowly over time with advances in knowledge on hereditary (i.e., genetic) and carcinogenic effects of radiation continually improving our ability to make informed judgments about how best to balance risks against benefits of radiation ex

Subacute thyroid injury and relative parathyroid preservation following ionizing radiation: altered HSP-90 immunoexpression in a rat model.

Ionizing radiation is widely used in the treatment of head and neck malignancies. However, its subacute effects on adjacent endocrine tissues have not yet been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the structural changes that develop in the thyroid and parathyroid glands following irradiation and to evaluate HSP-90 immunoexpression in these tissues. The researchers initially randomized eighteen male Wistar-Hannover rats into control and irradiation groups (n = 9 per group). Rats in the irradiation group underwent 6-MV photon irradiation of the head and neck target region using a no

Occupational Exposure to Ionizing Radiation in Female Physicians and Breast Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Advancements in health technologies have enabled the performance of minimally invasive procedures using ionizing radiation for radioscopy and fluoroscopy by various physicians including orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, urologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, and plastic surgeons. Simultaneously, there appears to be an increasing frequency of breast cancer among these professionals. In addition to other risk factors to which they are exposed, ionizing radiation plays a role in carcinogenesis. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted to summarize the av

Resilience of Hybrid Bioelectrodes in an Ionizing Environment: A Space Simulation Study of Limnospira indica Under Gamma Radiation.

Cyanobacteria possess unique biological properties and the ability to perform life-sustaining processes, which make them useful for applications in space exploration and colonization. Their potential use in bioelectricity and fuel production has garnered significant interest. This study explores the effects of ionizing radiation on the cyanobacterium Limnospira indica used in bioelectrodes. This is an important consideration as radiation levels in space are significantly higher than those experienced on Earth with its protective atmosphere and magnetosphere. In an approximate space radiation s
