The effect of microwave radiation on the stability and formation of gramicidin-A channels in lipid bilayer membranes.

The effects of microwaves on the single-channel kinetics of gramicidin-A channels in lipid bilayer membranes were examined. Attempts were made to separate thermal and athermal effects by accurate measurements of temperature at the site of the membrane and by relating the measured parameters to their previously characterized temperature dependence. It was found that microwave radiation does not affect single-channel conductance or channel life time to a degree that is significantly different from that expected of a purely thermal effect. On the other hand, the rate of channel formation is decre

The effect of pilocarpine and atropine administration on radiation-induced injury of rat submandibular glands.

In the management of head and neck tumors by radiotherapy, the patients are prone to suffer from radiation-induced damage of the salivary glands. This experiment was carried out to examine the effect of pilocarpine and atropine on the rat submandibular gland and to establish whether it is possible to protect the salivary glands from irradiation by altering the amount of secretory granules in the serous cells prior to irradiation. The submandibular glands of rats were irradiated after pretreatment with or without drugs. Single irradiation of 18 Gy caused significant damage to the submandibular

Differential effect of ionizing radiation on transcription in repair-deficient and repair-proficient mice.

Experiments were designed to examine in vivo changes in total transcription and in the expression of the c-fos gene following whole-body exposure of mice to JANUS fission-spectrum neutrons. Radiation repair-deficient (wst/wst) and -proficient (wst/., C57BL/6 x C3H F1) mice were exposed to JANUS fission-spectrum neutrons calibrated to deliver a gut dose of 50 cGy. Animals were sacrificed less than 10 or at 60 min postirradiation, and gut tissues were removed for study. Our results revealed that, in repair-proficient mice, an immediate depression (relative to untreated control) in total transcri

Thermal responses to 5.6-GHz radiofrequency radiation in anesthetized rats: effect of chlorpromazine.

Anesthetized rats were exposed to 5.6-GHz continuous wave radiofrequency radiation at an average power density of 60 mW/cm2 (average specific absorption rate 12 W/kg). Exposure was performed to raise colonic temperature from 38.5 to 39.5 degrees C. Following acute administration of chlorpromazine, body temperature exhibited a faster return to baseline temperature when exposure was discontinued. When exposure was initiated at 38.5 degrees C and continued until lethal temperatures resulted, chlorpromazine-treated animals exhibited significantly shorter survival times than saline-treated animals.

The radiation sensitivity of the haemopoietic microenvironment--effect of dose rate on ectopic ossicle formation.

The haemopoietic microenvironment (HM) consists of a complex mixture of cellular types and extra-cellular matrix. It is essential for prolonged haemopoiesis in both the normal situation and after bone marrow transplantation. The competence of the HM can be assessed by ectopic grafting of femoral marrow. A complete haemopoietic organ develops at the site of implantation. Stem cells (CFU-S) which inhabit the ossicle formed after ectopic implantation can be measured, to assess the function of the engrafted HM to support haemopoiesis. Using this functional endpoint we have examined the radiation s

Effect of diphosphonate on the prevention of X-radiation-induced inhibition of bone formation in rats.

A histologic and histometric study of the effect of EHDP (ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate) on the alveolar wound healing of irradiated animals is presented. This drug was selected based on its osteosclerotic effect when applied at low doses. The three left mandibular molars of 80 male Wistar rats were extracted. The rats were grouped into 4 sets of 20 rats each. Group I received no further treatment; Group II received daily intraperitoneal injections of EHDP (7.5 mg/Kg of body weight during 10 days); Group III: 15 Gy of X-radiation were applied to the head; and Group IV were irradiated and

Effect of alkoxyglycerols on the frequency of fistulas following radiation therapy for carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

The incidence of injuries following radiation therapy for carcinoma of the uterine cervix is markedly decreased by the administration of alkoxyglycerols. This is the case for less harmful injuries as well as for the more severe ones, i.e. the fistulas. Recto-vaginal and vesico-vaginal fistulas are reduced with 47 per cent when alkoxyglycerols are administered prior to radiation treatment.

Effect of ionizing radiation on the human brain: white matter and gray matter T1 in pediatric brain tumor patients treated with conformal radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To test a hypothesis that fractionated radiation therapy (RT) to less than 60 Gy is associated with a dose-related change in the spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) of normal brain tissue, and that such changes are detectable by quantitative MRI (qMRI). METHODS: Each of 21 patients received a qMRI examination before treatment, and at several time points during and after RT. A map of brain T1 was calculated and segmented into white matter and gray matter at each time point. The RT isodose contours were then superimposed upon the T1 map, and changes in brain tissue T1 were analyzed as

Variations in head tilt during the acquisition of cone beam computed tomography scans and their effects on effective radiation dose.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the impact of variations in anteroposterior and lateral tilts of patients head on radiation-weighted doses to organs/tissues and effective doses using 3 different cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) machines. METHODS: An anthropomorphic phantom was used to estimate radiation doses in 3 CBCT machines (OP300, Eagle X 3D, and Eagle Edge). Thermoluminescent dosimeters were placed in regions corresponding to pre-stablished organ/tissues. CBCT examinations from the posterior mandible and anterior maxilla regions were acquired, with 3 different anteroposterior angul

Effects of microwave or infrared radiation on protein ruminal degradation and in vitro intestinal digestibility in feedstuffs.

Microbial crude protein (MCP) is the main source of amino acids (AA) in the small intestine, followed by rumen undegraded protein (RUP). Due to limited MCP synthesis and increased AA demand in high-producing ruminants, strategies to enhance intestinal protein availability are relevant. This study evaluated the effects of thermal processing on six protein-rich feedstuffs: soybean meal, wheat bran, cottonseed meal, corn gluten feed, whole cottonseed, and whole soybean seed. A preliminary trial using soybean meal determined optimal processing times based on ruminal degradability curves. Two mathe

Diosgenin alleviates radiation nephropathy by suppressing renal mTORC1 signalling with concomitant effects on the gut and liver.

BACKGROUND: Radiation nephropathy is a progressive inflammatory and fibrotic condition lacking effective therapies. The underlying cellular signalling mechanisms and their potential systemic involvement remain poorly defined. METHODS: We integrated single-cell transcriptomics, network pharmacology, molecular docking and dynamics simulations, and in vivo validation in a murine model of whole-body irradiation. RNA sequencing data from healthy and irradiated mouse kidneys were analyzed to map cell-type-specific signalling activities of mTORC1, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and inflammation,

Evaluation of Synergic Effects of Molybdenum Disulfide Treatment and Near-Infrared Radiation on Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Introduction: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as an anticancer reagent, can absorb near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths in phototherapy. In the present study, the synergic effect of MoS2 (in nanostructure) and NIR radiation on human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) was evaluated via protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. Methods: Gene expression profiles of hMSCs were extracted from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and analyzed via PPI network analysis. The validity of findings was assessed via the Kaplan-Meier Plotter. Results: FN1, ACTA2, CCL2, CXCL8, FBN1, and LEP genes were se

Serum Pro-N-Cadherin Correlates With Cardiac Injury in the Radiation Late Effects Cohort of Nonhuman Primates.

BACKGROUND: The delayed effects of radiation exposure on the heart often manifest as cardiac fibrosis and diastolic dysfunction, which can develop years after exposure. However, no Food and Drug Administration-approved serological biomarker is available to assess an individual's risk of developing radiation-related heart disease (RRHD). OBJECTIVES: The authors hypothesize that the risk of RRHD can be assessed using serum pro-N-cadherin (PNC), a promising marker for predicting subclinical heart failure in the general population. METHODS: We examined 46 male nonhuman primates (NHPs) that survi
