Multi-class deep learning architecture for COVID-19, tuberculosis, and pneumonia classification using chest X-ray images.

Advancements in medical imaging and deep learning have enabled the development of intelligent systems that assist clinicians in diagnosing complex pulmonary diseases. This study addresses the growing concern over lung abnormalities caused by diseases such as COVID-19, tuberculosis (TB), and pneumonia. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based multi-class classification framework that uses chest X-ray images to automatically detect COVID-19, TB, pneumonia, and normal conditions. The original publicly available dataset exhibited class imbalance, with significantly fewer COVID-19 case

Deep generative abnormal lesion emphasization validated by nine radiologists and 1000 chest X-rays with lung nodules.

A general-purpose method of emphasizing abnormal lesions in chest radiographs, named EGGPALE (Extrapolative, Generative and General-Purpose Abnormal Lesion Emphasizer), is presented. The proposed EGGPALE method is composed of a flow-based generative model and L-infinity-distance-based extrapolation in a latent space. The flow-based model is trained using only normal chest radiographs, and an invertible mapping function from the image space to the latent space is determined. In the latent space, a given unseen image is extrapolated so that the image point moves away from the normal chest X-ray

Addressing the Contrast Media Recognition Challenge: A Fully Automated Machine Learning Approach for Predicting Contrast Phases in CT Imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Accurately acquiring and assigning different contrast-enhanced phases in computed tomography (CT) is relevant for clinicians and for artificial intelligence orchestration to select the most appropriate series for analysis. However, this information is commonly extracted from the CT metadata, which is often wrong. This study aimed at developing an automatic pipeline for classifying intravenous (IV) contrast phases and additionally for identifying contrast media in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study used 1200 CT scans collected at the i

Third-Generation Dual-Source Computed Tomography for Coronary Angiography With Individually Tailored Scan Protocols Can Achieve a Low Radiation Dose With Good Image Quality in Unselected Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the image quality and radiation exposure associated with coronary angiography obtained with a third-generation dual-source computed tomography, using body mass index (BMI)- and heart rate (HR)-adapted protocols in real-world patients. METHODS: Three scan protocols were implemented with regard to HR: prospective turbo high-pitch spiral, sequential, and retrospective spiral modes. We adapted the reference kilovoltage value according to BMI. Image quality was evaluated using a 4-point scale, and effective dose estimates were calculated using the dose-length product. RESULT

Lung and airway shape in neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is a rare lung disease associated with significant air trapping. Although chest CT is crucial in establishing a diagnosis, CT and biopsy findings do not reveal airway abnormalities to explain the air trapping. OBJECTIVE: We compared lung and airway morphology obtained from chest CT scans in children with NEHI and control children. In the children with NEHI, we explored relationships between lung and airway shape and lung function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children with NEHI who underwent clinic

Is celiac artery compression syndrome genetically inherited?: a case series from a family and review of the literature.

The median arcuate ligament is a tendinous arch joining the two medial borders of the diaphragm crura together. In 13-50% of asymptomatic subjects it is responsible for significant angiographic celiac trunk compression. The significance of median arcuate ligament-associated celiac artery compression has been a source of some controversy in the past literature, and the etiology remains unclear. We report here a case series from a family that was diagnosed by the use of multidetector computed tomography. The observation of this syndrome in a family suggests that the responsible anatomic relation
