Reaction of mast cells, the content of free and cell histamine and serotonin in the lung tissue at early stage of inflammation were studied on the model of hyperergic pleurisy in albino rats. Intrapleural antigen injection to sensitized rats was followed by progressive degranulation of mast cells of pleural and subpleural lung tissue with release of histamine and serotonin. Changes in the blood plasma cyclic nucleotide (cAMP and cGMP) level under the effect of vestibuloprotectors: bemytil and etoxibemytil were studied in rats with experimental motion sickness. It is established that rotation causes increase in the cAMP level and decrease in the cGMP level. The effect of the vestibuloprotectors is determined by the dose of the drug and is aimed first of all at maintaining a stable cAMP level in vestibular exertion. Under conditions of this experiment etoxibemytil was more effective than bemytil.

An endogenous brain lectin exhibiting beta-galactoside specificity (RBL-16) was localized during postnatal cerebellum development both at the light- and electron-microscopical level. In the present study, the effects of chloroquine and ethanol administration during gestation have been investigated on the developing rat fetus. Intragastric administration of chloroquine (700 mg/kg body weight) resulted in several structural abnormalities. Although phenobarbital is frequently used in the treatment of status epilepticus, little has been published concerning the dose or serum concentration which effectively control adult status. The levels of pineal and serum melatonin at mid-light and mid-dark of male rats under a photoperiod of 12h light:12 h darkness with age ranging from day 1 to day 42 postpartum were determined. At mid-dark, pineal melatonin levels were found to increase with age; when the body weight was considered, an early developmental rise (1-to-9-day old), an active period (11- to 17-day old), and a period of lower levels (after 21-day-old) were noted. To investigate the interactions between methotrexate (MTX) and irradiation of the central nervous system, adult rats were infused with MTX via the lateral cerebral ventricle either before, during, or following single fraction irradiation to the cervical spine. Single doses ranging from 1600 cGy to 3200 cGy were administered and the dose-response curve for forelimb paralysis was compared with that seen in irradiated animals which did not receive MTX. There was no effect on the dose-response curve when MTX was administered simultaneously with or following irradiation compared to radiation alone.

Water-soluble nonionic x-ray contrast media have greatly improved the quality and safety of myelography. Toxic side effects are still observed however. The side effects are generally worse with the first nonionic agent, metrizamide, which has a glucoselike side group. We attempted to demonstrate the presence of immunoreactive (ir) CRF in rat testis by RIA, and by an immunocytochemical technique. The RIA was performed on 27,000 x g supernatants of phosphate buffer extracts of adult rat testes, and revealed a high concentration of irCRF (51 - 74 ng/g testis), with a clear parallelism to the standard curve prepared with synthetic rat CRF. In contrast, the peripheral blood level of irCRF was extremely low (less than 0.05 ng/ml). The rate of bilirubin production was studied in 12-hour-old rats exposed to bupivacaine HCl by subcutaneous injection. The bilirubin production was estimated by measuring the excretion rate of carbon monoxide (VeCO) using an open flow-through system. No significant difference was found between the VeCO of bupivacaine HCl-treated and control animals, or between the levels of bilirubin in the pooled blood of treated (0.92 +/- 0.32 SE mg/dl) and control (1.0 +/- 0.28 SE mg/dl) animals.
