Iron-Enriched Carbonized Straw Reduces Rice Antimony Accumulation by Shifting the Dominant Antimony Sink from Soil Adsorption to Root-Surface Iron Plaque Sequestration.

Straw return is widely practiced in paddies, yet its role in antimony (Sb) transfer from soil-to-rice remains unclear. This study compared raw straw, carbonized straw (CR), and iron-manganese-enriched carbonized straw (FMCR) to resolve dynamic coupling among rhizosphere biogeochemistry, soil Sb bioavailability, iron plaque, and rice Sb accumulation. Straw return increased pH, SOC, reactive Fe, available K, and porewater sulfate, but decreased Eh and available P, driving stage-dependent Sb immobilization, reductive release, and reactivation. Dominant Sb sink shifted from soil/carbon matrix-iron…

Bacillibactin-Mediated Improvement of Peanut Iron Nutrition, Yield, and Grain Quality by Bacillus cereus Rpea2 in Calcareous Soils.

Iron deficiency in calcareous soils restricts peanut growth and yield. We isolated a high-siderophore strain, Bacillus cereus Rpea2, from the peanut rhizosphere intercropped with maize and assessed its effects on iron nutrition from mechanism to field performance. Genome analysis revealed a complete bacillibactin biosynthetic cluster. In hydroponics, Rpea2-derived siderophore alleviated iron-deficiency chlorosis, increased SPAD values, active iron in young leaves, and shoot biomass. Enhanced iron availability reduced expression of AhFRO1 and AhIRT1 and lowered root ferric-chelate reductase act…

Molecular Mechanisms and Mitigation Strategies of Cadmium Accumulation in Rice for Food Safety.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains remains a major food safety concern. Although mechanisms of Cd uptake, sequestra … m inconsistently in the field. This review proposes an integrated soilto-grain framework that links rhizosphere processes with Cd transport and redistribution in plants. We emphasize that Cd transport is closely associated with the homeostasis of essential micronutrients, particularly Mn, Zn, and Fe. Consequently, single-target interventions may inadvertently …

Niche-driven divergence of prokaryotic and viral communities in Pogonatum cirratum.

Ecological niche partitioning shapes microbial communities in terrestrial mosses, yet its underlying mechanisms and associated viral diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized prokaryotic and viral communities in the rhizosphere soil (Rs) and endophytic niche (Pc) of Pogonatum cirratum using amplicon and metagenomic sequencing. Rs exhibited higher species richness, co-dominated by Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinomycetota, whereas Pc was dominated by Pseudomonadota (81.13%) but showed greater functional diversity. Source tracking revealed that 10.57% of Pc taxa origin…

Low Cadmium Accumulating Potato Varieties for Safe Food Production: Mechanisms, Genetic Targets, and Integrated Agronomic Strategies.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of agricultural soils threatens food safety by promoting Cd accumulation in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers. Low-Cd-accumulating cultivars offer a promising mitigation strategy, although their effectiveness is strongly influenced by genotype × environmental interactions. This review synthesizes current evidence indicating that stable low-Cd phenotypes arise from coordinated regulation of soil Cd bioavailability, rhizosphere processes, root uptake, transporter-mediated translocation, and intracellular sequestration rather than cultivar genetics alone. Particular …

Pectin-modified Nano-selenium inhibits Phytophthora capsici infection and enhances the nutritional quality of pepper fruits.

Phytophthora blight caused by Phytophthora capsici severely limits pepper production, and chemical fungicides induce pathogen resistance and reduce fruit quality. Nano‑selenium (nano-Se) shows biocontrol potential but suffers from poor stability. Here, metabolomic analyses were performed to explore the mechanism by which pectin-modified nano-Se (nano-Se@PT) acts in pepper. Results showed that nano-Se@PT enhanced plant resistance by modulating the phenylpropanoid pathway (elevating 6-nitrocoumarin by 30%) and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Nano-Se@PT recruited beneficial rhizosphere microorganis…

Structural determination of mugineic acid, an iron(III)-chelating substance secreted from graminaceous plants for efficient iron uptake.

Iron is an essential element for organisms, but its solubility in soil is often extremely low. Previously, plants were considered to take up iron only after its reduction to ferrous ions. Takagi reported that oat and rice secrete chelating substances that solubilize ferric iron in the rhizosphere for efficient iron uptake. In 1978, Takemoto et al. reported the chemical structure of an iron-chelating compound secreted from barley roots, designated as mugineic acid. Mugineic acid and its derivatives, collectively known as mugineic acid family phytosiderophores (MAs), chelate ferric iron using oc…
