Robotic-assisted inguinal lymphadenectomy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lymphadenectomy represents the standard treatment for various types of cancer. The introduction of robotics in lymph node dissection may have an important impact on post-lymphadenectomy complications. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed. RESULTS: In our review, robotic inguinal lymphadenectomy was performed on 51 patients. Penile squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histological type of the primary neoplasia. No intra-operative complications were reported. One case of conversion to open was reported. The mean duration of hospitalization was 2 days. The du…

Robotic Mitral Valve Repair: The Learning Curve.

OBJECTIVE: Adoption of robotic mitral valve surgery has been slow, likely in part because of its perceived technical complexity and a poorly understood learning curve. We sought to correlate changes in technical performance and outcome with surgeon experience in the "learning curve" part of our series. METHODS: From 2006 to 2011, two surgeons undertook robotically assisted mitral valve repair in 458 patients (intent-to-treat); 404 procedures were completed entirely robotically (as-treated). Learning curves were constructed by modeling surgical sequence number semiparametrically with flexible

Frontiers in robot-assisted retroperitoneal oncological surgery.

Robot assistance has been rapidly adopted by urological surgeons and has become particularly popular for oncological procedures involving the retroperitoneal space. The wide dissemination of robot assistance probably reflects the limited amount of operating space available within the retroperitoneum and the advantages provided by robot-assisted approaches, including 3D imaging, wristed instrumentation and the shorter learning curve compared with that associated with the equivalent laparoscopic techniques. Surgical procedures that have traditionally been performed using an open or laparoscopic

[Robotic pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy : Video article].

Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy is one of the most complex procedures in general surgery. Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy was initially described in 1994; however, its worldwide distribution is so far limited to only a few specialist centers. Robotic surgery using the DaVinci® system can overcome many limitations of laparoscopic surgery. The system is a promising tool for a more widespread introduction of minimally invasive surgery for pancreatic diseases. Mortality rates of 0-5% and pancreatic fistula rates of 0-35% are described in the literature; therefore, thorough complica

Robotic assisted laparoscopic excision of a retroperitoneal Ganglioneuroma.

INTRODUCTION: Ganglioneuromas are rare benign neoplasms of the sympathetic nervous system. We describe the case of an incidentally found ganglioneuroma in a woman. To our knowledge this is the first described case of robotic excision of a retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma. CASE: A 41-year-old female had an incidental retroperitoneal mass found during a routine US. CT scan and MRI showed an 8.3cm homogeneous mass, adjacent to left kidney upper pole, with peripheral contrast enhancement. Metabolic tests were normal. Patient was positioned in a left flank position and five ports were introduced tra

Human-robot sensor interface for cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. A program of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is related to physical activities or exercises to regain the optimal quality of life. CR relies on the necessity to evaluate, control and supervise a patient's status and progress. This work has two objectives: on the one hand, provide a tool for clinicians to assess the patient's status during CR. On the other hand, there is evidence that robots can motivate patients during therapeutic procedures. Our sensor interface explores the possibility to integrate a robotic agent into cardiac th

Robotic surgery for esophageal cancer: Merits and demerits.

Since the introduction of robotic systems in esophageal surgery in 2000, the number of robotic esophagectomies has been gradually increasing worldwide, although robot-assisted surgery is not yet regarded as standard treatment for esophageal cancer, because of its high cost and the paucity of high-level evidence. In 2016, more than 1800 cases were operated with robot assistance. Early results with small series demonstrated feasibility and safety in both robotic transhiatal (THE) and transthoracic esophagectomies (TTE). Some studies report that the learning curve is approximately 20 cases. Follo

Robotic Rectopexy for Rectal Prolapse in Pediatric Patients.

Rectal prolapse is the protrusion of the rectum out of the anus. Surgical correction can be accomplished via open and minimally invasive abdominal approaches, as well as from the perineum. Robotic rectopexy is an option for minimally invasive treatment of rectal prolapse. There are no studies that have established the efficacy of robotic rectopexy for rectal prolapse in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to review the experience of robotic rectopexy at a single institution. This is a retrospective review of our pediatric robotic rectopexy experience from 2012 to 2015. Extravesical robotic ureteral reimplantation for ureterovaginal fistula.

INTRODUCTION: We present a video describing the technical considerations for performing an extravesical robotic ureteral reimplantation. METHODS: A 55-year old woman presented with urinary incontinence secondary to a ureterovaginal fistula after robotic-assisted hysterectomy. After failure of more conservative measures, she proceeded to a robotic ureteral reimplantation. Following port placement, the ureter is identified at the level of the iliac vessels and dissected circumferentially. The ureter is dissected free to the level of the ureterovaginal fistula, transected, and the distal remnant

Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Trachelectomy: A Standard Technique.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To describe a standard reproducible technique for simple robotic- assisted laparoscopic trachelectomy. DESIGN: Step-by-step demonstration of the technique using videos and pictures (Canadian Task Force classification level 3). SETTING: The incidence of trachelectomy after supracervical hysterectomy has been increasing, given the popularity of supracervical hysterectomy. The most common indication for trachelectomy is symptomatic cyclic bleeding. Trachelectomy can be performed vaginally as well as laparoscopically with or without robotic assistance. This video demonstrates a

Transoral Robotic Surgery with Sialendoscopy for a Plunging Ranula.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Plunging ranulas are oral mucoceles that often cannot be visualized directly and thus can be challenging to diagnose and differentiate from other neck lesions. Surgery is the preferred treatment option, but the optimal approach requires careful consideration. METHODS: We report the case of a plunging ranula presenting as an isolated neck mass in a 33-year-old patient. This patient was treated with a novel transoral robotic surgery (TORS)-assisted approach aided by sialendoscopy. RESULTS: TORS allowed for exceptional visualization and access to the plunging ranula and subling

Open versus robotic cystectomy: Comparison of outcomes.

Open radical cystectomy (ORC) is the current gold standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer. As surgeons become more proficient in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques, the number of patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) is increasing. Although minimally invasive methods are on the rise, research that critically compares open surgery with robotic methods is limited. In this review, we surveyed and appraised the current literature comparing ORC and RARC with regards to perioperative, functional, and oncologic outcomes in order to distinguish th
