Bridging illness uncertainty and self-care: The role of cognitive emotion regulation in type 2 diabetes management.

AIMS: This study assessed the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the relationship between illness uncertainty and diabetes health-promoting self-care behaviours. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 433 T2DM outpatients using the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale, the Diabetes Health Promotion Self-Care Scale, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Data were analysed using SPSS (v.29) for descriptive and Pearson correlation tests, and Process Macro for SPSS (Model 4, v.4.2) for mediation analysis. RESULTS: There is a statisticall

Does cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia reduce repetitive negative thinking and sleep-related worry beliefs? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT), i.e., worry, rumination, and transdiagnostic repetitive thinking, is thought to exacerbate and perpetuate insomnia in cognitive models. Moreover, RNT is a longitudinal precursor of depression and anxiety, which are often co-present alongside insomnia. Whilst accumulating evidence supports the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms, the literature on the effects of CBT-I on RNT has never been systematically appraised. Importantly, preliminary evidence suggests that reduction of RNT following

How do mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction improve mental health and wellbeing? A systematic review and meta-analysis of mediation studies.

Given the extensive evidence base for the efficacy of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), researchers have started to explore the mechanisms underlying their therapeutic effects on psychological outcomes, using methods of mediation analysis. No known studies have systematically reviewed and statistically integrated mediation studies in this field. The present study aimed to systematically review mediation studies in the literature on mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), to identify potential psychological mechanisms underlying MBCT and M

Difficulties in disengaging attentional resources from self-generated thoughts moderate the link between dysphoria and maladaptive self-referential thinking.

Negative emotions increase self-focused attention, a core feature of depression and anxiety-related disorders. However, the cognitive mechanisms associated with the tendency to self-focus-and, conversely, with the ability to voluntarily disengage attentional resources from the self and direct them towards the external environment-remain poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to examine whether a specific cognitive control mechanism that directs attention between self-generated thoughts and external information might moderate the relationship between dysphoria and maladaptive self-referentia

Introduction to the Special Issue on Cognitive and Behavioral Flexibility in Fear and Anxiety Disorders.

Converging lines of research highlight the significance of cognitive and behavioral flexibility in the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of fear and anxiety disorders. We have developed a Special Issue to highlight recent empirical investigations, contemporary theory, and novel directions for future study. It is hoped that this special issue will (a) underscore the centrality of cognitive and behavioral flexibility to fear- and anxiety-related psychopathology, (b) call attention to cognitive science approaches investigating related neuropsychological correlates, and (c) highlight novel expe

Cognitive-emotional sensitization and somatic health complaints.

Sensitization is conceptually related to cognitive bias in experimental psychopathology, and they share the basic mechanism of neuronal sensitization. Every strongly relevant individual concern, like fears, can yield cognitive bias or "cognitive-emotional sensitization". It might also be present for bodily and environmental information related to illness, and could be an etiological factor in medically unexplained complaints. Physiological and cognitive sensitization are theoretically compared. There is evidence for cognitive-emotional sensitization in some medically unexplained somatic compla

Depressive Symptoms and Self-Reported Emotion Regulation Strategy Use Among Empty-Nest Older Adults Following Recalled Happy and Sad Events.

Although the psychological consequences of the empty-nest period are heterogeneous, depressive symptoms remain an important concern among empty-nest older adults in China. However, little is known about how depressive symptoms are associated with the self-reported use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies following positive and negative emotional events. This study compared the self-reported use of nine ER strategies following recalled happy and sad events among empty-nest older adults with high versus low depressive symptoms (N = 145) using generalized estimating equations. Older adults with

The Role of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies on Problematic Smartphone Use: Comparison between Problematic and Non-Problematic Adolescent Users.

Prior work has suggested that individuals with deficits in emotion regulation skills are prone to compulsive behaviour and to following maladaptive coping strategies, such as smartphone overuse, to manage negative moods. Adolescence is a vulnerable developmental stage for deficits in emotion regulation, and these are linked to excessive smartphone use. The present study is the first to examine the links between the use of specific cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies and problematic smartphone use in a sample of adolescents. A total of 845 Spanish adolescents (455 females) completed t

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), cognitive style, and the temporal dynamics of frontal EEG alpha asymmetry in recurrently depressed patients.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), a meditation-based maintenance therapy, reduces the relapse risk in individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). However, only a few studies investigated the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this protective effect. We examined effects of MBCT on trait rumination and mindfulness, as indicators of global cognitive style, as well as on residual depressive symptoms in a group of recurrently depressed patients (n=78) in remission. Additionally, alpha asymmetry in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) was assessed. Alpha asymmetr

Orbital frontal cortex functional connectivity during gain anticipation linking the rumination and non-suicidal self-injury in late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent and especially among the adolescence population. It has been argued that abnormal brain activations in reward processing could be regarded as objective biomarkers in NSSI, but the evidence is mixed. This study aims to explore the reward processing mechanism of NSSI from the perspective of functional brain circuitry and investigate the role of a cognitive factor (rumination). METHOD: Seventy-one 17-21 years old participants performed a monetary incentive delay (MID) task during functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. Psychophysiol

Emotion regulation and disordered eating behaviour in youths: Two daily-diary studies.

OBJECTIVE: Disordered eating cognitions and behaviours in childhood and adolescence have been identified as precursors for the development of eating disorders. Another important contributor to eating disorder risk is maladaptive emotion regulation. However, while the regulation of negative affect has been the focus of much research, the literature on the role of positive emotion regulation in eating pathology is extremely limited. The present study extends previous research by examining the regulation of both positive and negative affect in disordered eating using two waves of a daily diary de

Restoring depleted resources: Efficacy and mechanisms of change of an internet-based unguided recovery training for better sleep and psychological detachment from work.

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of an Internet-based intervention, which aimed to improve recovery from work-related strain in teachers with sleeping problems and work-related rumination. In addition, mechanisms of change were also investigated. METHODS: A sample of 128 teachers with elevated symptoms of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index [ISI] ≥ 15) and work-related rumination (Cognitive Irritation Scale ≥ 15) was assigned to either an Internet-based recovery training (intervention condition [IC]) or to a waitlist control condition (CC). Night running and internet addiction among university students: a serial mediation model of stress/anxiety and rumination.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is prevalent among university students and is often linked to negative affect and maladaptive cognition. Time-specific physical activity such as night running may relate to IA, but the psychological mechanisms remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between night running and IA and tested whether stress/anxiety and rumination mediate this relationship in a serial pathway. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 1,138 undergraduates from two universities in Guangdong Province, China. Night running frequency

The effects of student bullying on non-suicidal self-injurious behavior in rural adolescents: the chain-mediated effects of alexithymia and ruminate thinking.

Bullying among students is a significant risk factor for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which can adversely impact the physical and mental health development of individuals. To explore the mechanisms by which student bullying affects adolescent non-suicidal self-injury, 701 adolescents were selected as participants. The assessment tools included the Bullying Questionnaire, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Ruminative Responses Scale, and Adolescents Non-suicidal Self-injury Assessment Questionnaire, which were used to measure the experiences of bullying, levels of alexithymia, rumination tendencies

Pain-Related Rumination, But Not Magnification or Helplessness, Mediates Race and Sex Differences in Experimental Pain.

UNLABELLED: Compared with white individuals and men, black individuals and women show a lower tolerance for experimental pain stimuli. Previous studies suggest that pain catastrophizing is important in this context, but little is known about which components of catastrophizing contribute to these race and sex differences. The purpose of the current study was to examine the individual components of catastrophizing (rumination, magnification, and helplessness) as candidate mediators of race and sex differences in experimental pain tolerance. Healthy undergraduates (N = 172, 74% female, 43.2% bla

Bedtime procrastination as a typical problem of self-regulation? Insights from the examination of heart rate variability, behavioral regulation and emotion regulation.

Bedtime procrastination (BP), recognized as a common self-regulation issue, is linked to insufficient sleep and in turn, adverse health outcomes. However, the specific contributions of different components of self-regulation - particularly the biological underpinnings - remain insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the relationship between BP and self-regulation components, namely vagally-mediated HRV (vmHRV) as physiological concomitant of self-regulation, behavioral regulation, and emotion regulation. A final sample of N = 135 adults completed a baseline vmHRV

Rethinking psychological treatment targets for pediatric rumination syndrome: Clinical implications from a case series analysis.

Rumination syndrome (RS) is a common pediatric disorder of gut-brain interaction. However, a dearth of research on efficacious treatment to help guide clinical decision-making remains. Thus, relying on well-established treatment recommendations for other conditions with similar mechanisms or symptom profiles may be helpful; for example, conceptualizing RS treatment targets to address it as a "tic disorder of the gut" could be beneficial. To demonstrate the clinical utility of this conceptualization, we presented two cases that provide broad implications for treating pediatric RS. In both cases

Puberty and Transdiagnostic Risks for Mental Health.

Puberty in girls represents a notable period of vulnerability for different psychological disorders. The research literature has primarily considered external and contextual factors that might explain these rises in symptomatology. In the present study, we investigate relations of pubertal status and timing with individual cognitive, emotional, and behavioral tendencies, commonly identified as transdiagnostic processes, in a sample of N = 228 girls (Mage  = 11.75 years). We also test whether these transdiagnostic processes mediate associations of pubertal status and pubertal timing with depres
