Assessing young children's views of their academic, social, and emotional lives: an evaluation of the self-perception scales of the Berkeley Puppet Interview.

In a prospective, longitudinal study we examined the psychometric properties of the self-perception scales of the Berkeley Puppet Interview (BPI). A total sample of 97 young children were assessed with the BPI at 3 time points: preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. The BPI assesses young children's self-perceptions of their school adjustment in 6 domains: academic competence, achievement motivation, social competence, peer acceptance, depression-anxiety, and aggression-hostility. Results showed that 4 1/2- to 7 1/2-year-olds possess a multidimensional self-concept that can be reliably meas

A Tablet Computer-Based Food Record for the Self-Assessment of Nutritional Intake in Patients Undergoing Geriatric Rehabilitation: Prospective Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status is an influential factor for functional status and rehabilitation outcomes in patients undergoing geriatric rehabilitation. Although there is evidence for the potential of eHealth interventions in patients undergoing geriatric rehabilitation in general, the evidence for eHealth interventions with a focus on nutrition is scarce. In other target groups with older people, eHealth applications to support nutrition, such as computer-based food records, have been used successfully. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify whether it is feasible for pa

Modified Mansoor's self-report tool for cardiovascular risk assessment predicts major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events and amputations in peripheral artery disease.

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) constitutes a major global burden of disease. Regarding patient-cases of patients with PAD, it is of outstanding interest to identify patients with a high risk for adverse in-hospital events. Thus, risk stratification tools including scores are of key interest for prognosis prediction. Materials and methods: The German nationwide inpatient statistics 2005-2018 was used for this analysis. Patient-cases of PAD patients were stratified according to a modified Mansoor's Self-Report Tool for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment class and compared. The predictiv

Self-assessment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale on the patient's smartphone proves to be non-inferior to clinic data capture.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate self-assessment of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) using the patient's smartphone and to analyze non-inferiority to clinic assessment. METHODS: In an observational study, ALSFRS-R data being remotely collected on a mobile application (App-ALSFRS-R) were compared to ALSFRS-R captured during clinic visits (clinic-ALSFRS-R). ALS progression rate (ALSPR)-as calculated by the monthly decline of ALSFRS-R-and its intrasubject variability (ALSPR-ISV) between ratings were used to compare both cohorts. To investigate non-inferiority…

The Mobile Toolbox for remote, self-administered cognitive assessment in older adults: associations with in-clinic cognitive testing and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Remote, smartphone-based cognitive assessments such as the Mobile Toolbox (MTB) may increase the accessibility of Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. We examined the feasibility of the MTB among cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults and investigated its associations with standardized in-clinic cognitive testing and amyloid and tau positron emission tomography imaging. METHODS: A total of 100 CU older adults self-administered the MTB remotely on their personal devices. Linear regression models correcting for demographics investigated associations of MTB fluid and crystal

Longitudinal concordance of body composition and anthropometric assessment by a novel smartphone application across a 12-week self-managed weight loss intervention.

Smartphone applications (SPA) now offer the ability to provide accessible in-home monitoring of relevant individual health biomarkers. Previous cross-sectional validations of similar technologies have reported acceptable accuracy with high-grade body composition assessments; this research assessed longitudinal agreement of a novel SPA across a self-managed weight loss intervention of thirty-eight participants (twenty-one males, seventeen females). Estimations of body mass (BM), body fat percentage (BF%), fat-free mass (FFM) and waist circumference (WC) from the SPA were compared with ground tr

A Shear-Thinning, Self-Healing, Dual-Cross Linked Hydrogel Based on Gelatin/Vanillin/Fe3+ /AGP-AgNPs: Synthesis, Antibacterial, and Wound-Healing Assessment.

A shear-thinning and self-healing hydrogel based on a gelatin biopolymer is synthesized using vanillin and Fe3+ as dual crosslinking agents. Rheological studies indicate the formation of a strong gel found to be injectable and exhibit rapid self-healing (within 10 min). The hydrogels also exhibited a high degree of swelling, suggesting potential as wound dressings since the absorption of large amounts of wound exudate, and optimum moisture levels, lead to accelerated wound healing. Andrographolide, an anti-inflammatory natural product is used to fabricate silver nanoparticles, which are charac

Assessment of knowledge and acceptability of HIV self-testing among students of selected universities in southwest Nigeria: an online cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: in Nigeria, it was estimated that 1.9 million people were living with HIV of which 130,000 people were newly infected with HIV. HIV self-testing would potentially increase access to HIV testing for people to know their status, get diagnosed, and initiate treatment as soon as possible. Our study aims to assess the knowledge of HIV Self-Testing (HIVST) and the acceptability of this youth-friendly approach among students in southwest Nigeria online. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted among bona fide undergraduate students (2019/2020 session) of two popular tertiary inst

Assessment of the self-reported dysphagia in patients undergoing one-level versus two-level cervical disc replacement with the Prestige-LP prosthesis.

OBJECTIVES: Cervical disc replacement (CDR) has been established as an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for treating cervical degenerative pathologies over the past decade. However, swallowing difficulties challenge patient safety due to the increased risk of malnutrition, dehydration and aspiration pneumonia after CDR. Currently, there are limited studies focusing on the incidences, severity and associated risk factors for dysphagia after CDR. This paucity, therefore, necessitated this retrospective study on post-operative dysphagia after one- and two-level CDR.

Assessment of Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Safety Using the Self-Controlled Tree-Temporal Scan Statistic Signal-Detection Method in the Sentinel System.

The self-controlled tree-temporal scan statistic-a new signal-detection method-can evaluate whether any of a wide variety of health outcomes are temporally associated with receipt of a specific vaccine, while adjusting for multiple testing. Neither health outcomes nor postvaccination potential periods of increased risk need be prespecified. Using US medical claims data in the Food and Drug Administration's Sentinel system, we employed the method to evaluate adverse events occurring after receipt of quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (4vHPV). Incident outcomes recorded in emergency depar

An exploratory qualitative assessment of self-reported treatment outcomes and satisfaction among patients accessing an innovative voluntary drug treatment centre in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: In Malaysia, compulsory drug detention centres (CDDCs) hold suspected drug users for two years without adjudication. Acute detoxification without healthcare access has been documented. CDDCs are criticized globally due to ineffectiveness in treating addiction and human rights violations. In response, the Malaysian government began transitioning these facilities into voluntary drug treatment centres known as "Cure and Care" (C&C) centres that embrace a holistic treatment-based approach to drug addiction rehabilitation. METHODS: An explorative qualitative study was undertaken to exp

Reliability and validity of the Finnish version of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form, patient self-report section.

BACKGROUND: The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form (ASES) is one of the most widely used shoulder outcome tools in clinical work and in scientific studies. However, it has not been validated in the Finnish language. The aims of this study were to cross-culturally adapt the ASES to the Finnish language and to study the psychometric properties of the self-report section of the ASES. METHODS: A total of 105 patients with shoulder symptoms answered the questionnaires of the ASES, a single disability question, the Simple Shoulder Test (SST), and the Short-Fo
