Cells of Pasteurella haemolytica serotypes A1 and A6 were extracted with sodium salicylate and the chemical and antigenic composition of both extracts determined. A total of 412 feed samples and 632 litter samples from 15 poultry farms (2 breeding farms and 13 rearing farms) were examined for salmonella. Twelve of these farms had salmonella in litter, five farms had salmonella in the feed and four had salmonella in both feed and litter. During the ten year period 1970 through 1979, pneumococci from 1205 episodes of pneumococcal disease affecting children and adults in Australia were studied. These included 188 cases of bacteremic pneumonia (85% in adults), 103 cases of primary bacteremia (50% adults), 201 cases of meningitis (69% children), 13 cases of osteomyelitis and/or arthritis, and 13 cases of peritonitis. A total number of 18.675 sera of pigs were examined for the presence of antibodies to various serotypes of Leptospira in the Netherlands during the period from 1975 to 1980. The study showed an average of 21 per cent of positive serological findings. The distribution of these findings amongst the various serotypes of Leptospira was as follows: L. bratislava 39%; L tarassovi 22%; L. ballum 15% and L. icterohaemorrhagiae 12%. This study examined the resistance to penicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol of 318 pneumococcal strains isolated in Spanish hospitals from blood or cerebrospinal fluid of patients during 1979 to 1981. The antibody levels to Legionella pneumophila, serotype 1 in two groups of healthy New Zealanders have been determined by the indirect fluorescent antibody test. These have been compared with antibody levels obtained from patients' sera submitted for L. pneumophila antibody levels. Significant levels of antibody have been found among the healthy people. The lower age groups demonstrated greater levels of immunity than those of patients suspected of having the disease.

An outbreak of acute hemolytic disease in a large flock of sheep resulted in a mortality of approximately 5% in lambs. A diagnosis of Leptospira interrogans serotype hardjo infection was established on the basis of the presence of leptospires in the urine of one lamb, serologic findings in a guinea pig inoculated with this urine, L. hardjo titers in lambs, and pathologic findings. Prominent necropsy findings included severe icterus, thin watery blood, dark red to black kidneys and severe hemoglobinuria.

Kidneys of cattle, mice and badgers were cultured for leptospires in an attempt to evaluate the relative importance of these species in the epidemiology of bovine leptospirosis caused by the Hebdomadis serogroup. Leptospires closely related to serotype hardjo were recovered from 57 (28.5 per cent) of 200 cattle examined but no evidence of infection was found in either badgers or mice, indicating that cattle act as the maintenance host for serotype hardjo. Many cattle were seronegative carriers.

The cellular immunity to Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 3 and crude human thyroid extract in 64 patients with thyroid diseases and 25 controls was studied by the leucocyte migration test. Over a 2-year period 67 strains of Bordetella pertussis were identified in 231 single specimens of nasopharyngeal secretions submitted from patients suspected to have whooping cough in the National Capital Region; 89.5% of the identifications were made by culture. Serotype 1,3 was predominant. At least 75% of the patients with bacteriologically confirmed whooping cough had not been fully immunized. There was no evidence that adenoviruses or other viruses played any important etiologic role in the 204 cases of whooping cough or whooping cough syndrome studied virologically.

A total of forty-five guinea pigs were injected subcutaneously with 0.1 cu cm carboneum tetracholoratum each and were infected with Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 9. Part of the animals (31) were treated at the 24th hour following infection with omnopon (a morphine preparation).
