Estimation of the age at onset of Huntington's disease from factors associated with the affected parent.

In an attempt to relate the age at onset of Huntington's disease to parental factors, the effects of parental onset-age (Po) and the age of the transmitting parent at the birth of a subsequently affected child (Pc) have been examined in a sample of cases ascertained from Victorian kindreds. There was a significant positive linear regression of onset-age on the variable Po-Pc; the result was independent of the sex of affected parent or child. It is suggested that the pathogenetic process is activated in individuals at a fixed time before their genetically determined onset-ages and need not comm

Emotional face processing across neurodevelopmental disorders: a dynamic faces study in children with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is classically associated with poor face processing skills, yet evidence suggests that those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also have difficulties understanding emotions. We determined the neural underpinnings of dynamic emotional face processing across these three clinical paediatric groups, including developmental trajectories, compared with typically developing (TD) controls. We studied 279 children, 5-19 years of age but 57 were excluded due to excessive motion in fMRI, leaving 222: 87 ASD, 44 ADHD

Cross-sectional analysis of potential risk factors of the pineal gland calcification.

The Pineal gland (PG) is the site of production of melatonin as an important central hormone in the body. It is not known yet whether PG calcification (PGC) is an age-associated physiological process or a pathologic condition caused by lifestyle-factors and metabolic-dysregulations.Here, we performed a cross-sectional analysis on 586 patients referred to have Computed Tomographic (CT) scans (above 15 years old), in the Ali Ebne Abi Taleb hospital radiology center in 2017-2018. Based on the CT-scans of the brain, the presence of PGC was recorded and a score of scale 0 to 6 (PGC_score) was calcu

Insula and orbitofrontal cortical morphology in substance dependence is modulated by sex.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Frontolimbic circuits are involved in learning and decision-making processes thought to be affected in substance-dependent individuals. We investigated frontolimbic cortical morphometry in substance-dependent men and women and determined whether morphometric measurements correlated with decision-making performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight abstinent SDI (17 men/11 women) were compared with 28 controls (13 men/15 women). Cortical thicknesses and volumes were computed by using FreeSurfer. After controlling for age and intracranial volume, group and sex effects

Endocrine disrupting effects of estrone on male Siniperca chuatsi: From gonadal remodeling to gene regulation.

Estrone (E1), a ubiquitous environmental estrogen, poses a potential threat to the reproductive health of aquatic organisms. To evaluate the inducing effect of E1 exposure on gonadal feminization in male Siniperca chuatsi, male fish were exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 μg/L E1 for 60 days. The effects of E1 exposure on serum sex hormones, gonadal histological sections, vasa in situ hybridization, cell apoptosis, and gene expression in S. chuatsi were systematically examined. The results showed that 0.1 μg/L E1 treatment significantly inhibited testicular germ cell development, while 1 μg/L E1 t

Sex-specific differences in age-related aortic valve calcium load: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Aging of the aortic valve, characterized by leaflet thickening and loss of extensibility, leads to progressive changes in valve function. These age-related mechanisms have not been evaluated yet in sex-specific calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) onset and progression. Recent studies reported the association between high aortic valve calcification (AVC) load and male gender in patients with CAVS while women present faster progression than men. To evaluate these age- and sex-specific differences, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis with meta-regression. A systematic search rela

Comparing the effectiveness of a crowdsourced video and a social marketing video in promoting condom use among Chinese men who have sex with men: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Crowdsourcing has been used to spur innovation and increase community engagement in public health programmes. Crowdsourcing is the process of giving individual tasks to a large group, often involving open contests and enabled through multisectoral partnerships. Here we describe one crowdsourced video intervention in which a video promoting condom use is produced through an open contest. The aim of this study is to determine whether a crowdsourced intervention is as effective as a social marketing intervention in promoting condom use among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM)

[Understanding and reaching young clandestine sex workers in Burkina Faso to improve response to HIV].

In 1998, researchers in Burkina Faso enrolled 300 women more or less involved in commercial sex work in an open cohort to determine whether adequate management of their sexually transmitted infections and exposure to well-designed, well-delivered, and plentiful communication for behaviour change (CBC) might reduce their vulnerability to HIV. In 2000, they observed that the non-professional sex workers (occasional or clandestine sex workers) were more difficult to reach, to mobilize and to keep involved in the project's different activities. This group was also infected at the same or higher ra

Sex differences in the impact of social determinants of health on substance use disorder treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and clinical severity factors are known to shape substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes, yet limited research has explored how these influences differ by sex. Understanding these differences is important to improving treatment equity and outcomes in publicly funded treatment systems. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the 2018-2022 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D), a national dataset of adults discharged from publicly funded SUD treatment programs. Sex-stratified binary logistic regressions were used to examine predic

Surgical Decision-Making for Individuals with Differences of Sex Development: Stakeholders' views.

INTRODUCTION: Advocacy and human rights organizations have called for a moratorium on elective surgical procedures until the patient is able to fully participate in the decision-making process. Due to the controversial nature surrounding surgery in differences of sex development (DSD) care, we aimed to assess the factors that teens and adults with DSD, parents, healthcare providers and other allied professionals consider pertinent to complex surgical decisions in DSD. METHODS: Stakeholders (n=110) in DSD care participated in semi-structured interviews exploring features and potential determin

Genomic insights into stepwise selection reshaping fruit traits and male-biased selection driving hermaphroditism in papayas.

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a promising model system for genetic and genomic studies of fruit traits and sex determination in tropical trees and fruits. However, the genomic basis of the artificial selection for key fruit traits and commercially crucial hermaphroditism remains poorly understood. In this study, we assembled the genomes for two phenotypically divergent hermaphroditic cultivars, including their haplotype-phased sex-determining regions (SDRs). Population genomic analyses of wild, common-type (for vegetable use), and fruit-type (for fresh consumption) papayas revealed a clear domesti

Analyzing Mandibular Characteristics for Age and Gender Variation Through Digital Radiographic Techniques: A Retrospective Study.

Background Forensic odontology has emerged as a crucial method for identifying skeletal or dental remains. Due to the restricted accuracy of current techniques for estimating age at death, researchers have endeavored to illustrate age-related alterations in dental hard tissues. Bone remodeling constitutes an ongoing and intricate process throughout our lifespan. It is believed that morphological changes in the mandible during an individual's lifetime are influenced by both dental condition and the individual's age. Objectives This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mandibular parameters su

Age- and sex-specific effects of maternal separation on the acoustic startle reflex in rats: early baseline enhancement in females and blunted response to ambiguous threat.

Early life adversity (ELA) increases the incidence of later-life anxiety disorders. Dysregulated threat processing, including responsivity to ambiguous threats, is an indicator of anxiety disorders and can be influenced by childhood experiences. The acoustic startle response is a defensive reflex displayed by mammals when exposed to sudden intense stimuli reflecting individual variations in vigilance. These measures can be altered by previous experience and experimental modifications, including the introduction of unconditioned aversive stimuli. Rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in the

Fourfold lifespan extension in C. elegans daf-2 mutant males.

Aging is a universal biological process driven by conserved genetic networks that balance somatic maintenance with growth and reproduction. The insulin/insulin-like growth factor I signaling pathway is a central architect of this balance, and inhibiting its activity has long been established as a primary mechanism to extend lifespan across diverse species. However, our understanding of this pathway's limits has been constrained by a historical focus on hermaphroditic models, which inherently link longevity extensions to a rigid trade-off involving immense reproductive costs and restricted soma
