Phosphorus metabolic disorder of Guizhou semi-fine wool sheep.

Guizhou semi-fine wool sheep are affected by a disease, characterized by emaciation, lameness, stiffness in the gait, enlargement of the costochondral junctions, and abnormal curvature in the long bones. The objective of this study was to determine possible relationships between the disease and mineral deficiencies. Samples of tissue and blood were collected from affected and unaffected sheep. Samples of soil and forage were collected from affected and unaffected areas. The samples were used for biochemical analyses and mineral nutrient measurements. Results showed that phosphorus (P) concentr…

Copper deficiency in sheep with high liver iron accumulation.

An outbreak of enzootic ataxia among sheep raised in the northeastern region of Brazil is described. Copper (Cu) deficiency was diagnosed in a herd of 56 sheep, among which five presented characteristic clinical symptoms of enzootic ataxia. The symptoms began 30 days after birth, with a clinical condition that included locomotion difficulty, limb ataxia, tremors, and continual falls. Liver biopsies were performed and blood was collected to determine hepatic and plasmatic Cu, iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) concentration, respectively. The laboratory results showed that the animals presented low coppe…

Renal sympathetic nerve activity during asphyxia in fetal sheep.

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is an important mediator of fetal adaptation to life-threatening in utero challenges, such as asphyxia. Although the SNS is active well before term, SNS responses mature significantly over the last third of gestation, and its functional contribution to adaptation to asphyxia over this critical period of life remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the hypotheses that increased renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) is the primary mediator of decreased renal vascular conductance (RVC) during complete umbilical cord occlusion in preterm fetal sheep (101 ± 1 …

Atypical scrapie/Nor98 in a sheep from New Zealand.

In a consignment of sheep brains from New Zealand, to be used in Europe as negative control material in scrapie rapid screening test evaluations, brain samples from 1 sheep (no. 1512) gave the following initially confusing results in various screening tests: the brainstem repeatedly produced negative results in 2 very similar screening kits (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]-1, ELISA-2), a macerate made from brainstem and cerebellum returned a clearly positive result in ELISA-2, and the macerate and a brainstem sample gave negative results in a third screening test (ELISA-3). In subseq…

Conditioning taste aversion to Mascagnia rigida (Malpighiaceae) in sheep.

The objective of this study was to determine if sheep could be averted to Mascagnia rigida, a toxic plant found in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Twelve female sheep naïve to M. rigida were randomly allocated to two treatment groups: control (treated with 15 mL water orally by a drenching gun) and lithium group (treated with 150 mg LiCl/kg body weight orally by a drenching gun). For conditioning, sheep were allowed to feed on M. rigida leaves for 15 min, followed by LiCl or water administration. The time spent eating M. rigida leaves was measured. The conditioning was repeated dai…

Drainage routes of bronchial blood flow in anaesthetized sheep.

The systemic circulation to the lung supplies the trachea and airway walls and may be important in the pathophysiology of asthma and pulmonary oedema. An understanding of the venous drainage pathways of this bronchial blood flow may be therapeutically important. The purpose of this study was to understand the normal drainage pathways in sheep. In seven anaesthetized, ventilated sheep we injected echo contrast agents into a systemic vein or into the bronchial artery while performing echocardiography to determine whether the drainage could be observed to the right heart and/or to the left heart.…

Lymphangiogenesis following obstruction of large postnodal lymphatics in sheep.

We examined the impact of lymph flow obstruction in large post-nodal lymphatic vessels in sheep. A silk ligature was placed 2 cm downstream from the prescapular or popliteal lymph node and tightened to interrupt flow. At 6, 12 and 16 weeks after lymph flow blockage, a network of small interconnecting lymphatics (approximately 10-40 microm in diameter) could be observed in the vicinity of the ligature. These were identified using antibodies to the lymphatic endothelial markers LYVE-1 or VEGFR-3 or unequivocally, with the upstream intraluminal injection of the non-specific cell dye CFDA-SE. The …

[Molecular Cloning of Smooth Muscle Calponin h1 in SHeep.].

It was found that the level of Calponin h1 (CaP h1) mRNA was significantly up-regulated by Estrogen in the myometrium of sheep towards the end pregnancy. Although the CaP h1 has been widely used as a reference gene to observe the changes of expression level of other genes, the full-length gene in sheep has not been obtained. With the oligo nucleotide primers according to human, mouse and pig CaP h1 mRNA, the full-length cDNA of CaP h1 was cloned by 5'- and 3'-RACE (Genbank accession number = AY327118). The cDNA was 1499bp in length and contained a complete open reading frame of 891 bp, encodin…

Polioencephalomalacia in adult sheep grazing pastures with prostrate pigweed.

Polioencephalomalacia was diagnosed in 2 animals from different farms. In apparently healthy animals from same farms, fecal thiaminase and a significant reduction in erythrocyte trans-ketolase activity was observed. The presence of thiaminase in Amaranthus blitoides could have contributed to the development of polioencephalomalacia in sheep grazing on natural pastures.

Antidepressants, sex steroids and pituitary-adrenal response in sheep.

The importance of sex differences in major affective diseases such as depression is providing a new focus for investigating the interactions between sex, sex steroids and antidepressants. In this study, we examined the acute effects of sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and imipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) on the endocrine endpoints, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol secretion in gonadectomised male and female sheep. Each sheep was treated with an acute subcutaneous (s.c.) injection containing vehicle, sertraline (5 and 10 mg/kg), or imipramine (10 mg…

PrPSc accumulation in myocytes from sheep incubating natural scrapie.

Because variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans probably results from consumption of products contaminated with tissue from animals with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, whether infectious prion protein is present in ruminant muscles is a crucial question. Here we show that experimentally and naturally scrapie-affected sheep accumulate the prion protein PrP(Sc) in a myocyte subset. In naturally infected sheep, PrP(Sc) is detectable in muscle several months before clinical disease onset. The relative amounts of PrP(Sc) suggest a 5,000-fold lower infectivity for muscle as compared to…

Chronic rotator cuff injury and repair model in sheep.

BACKGROUND: Most rotator cuff surgery is performed on chronic tears. As there is no animal model in which to examine the physiology of muscle and tendon injury and repair in this setting, we developed a chronic rotator cuff injury model in sheep. METHODS: The infraspinatus tendon was released in thirty-six female sheep. Biopsy specimens were obtained from the muscle and were analyzed for fat content. The force generated by the muscle with supramaximal stimulation was recorded intraoperatively. A control group (twelve sheep) underwent an immediate tendon repair. In the remaining twenty-four sh…

Emerging diseases. Hunt for mad cow in sheep reassuring.

Experts on brain-riddling spongiform diseases have grown steadily more uneasy over signs that so-called mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which is linked to a lethal human illness, may be lurking in sheep. A study in the 10 August issue of Nature now offers evidence that BSE is not rampant in sheep after all, although scientists are far from ready to let their guard down.
