Trauma is a predominant cause of acute shoulder pain, commonly secondary to fractures (clavicle, scapula, or proximal humerus) or soft tissue injuries (typically involving the rotator cuff, acromioclavicular ligaments, or labroligamentous complex). Radiography is the imaging modality of choice for initial assessment of acute shoulder pain and identification of potential fractures. In cases where radiographs yield normal or inconclusive results, additional imaging modalities such as ultrasound, MRI, or CT of the shoulder without contrast, or MR or CT arthrography, may be useful to diagnose the

OBJECTIVE: This analysis critically compares publications discussing complications and functional outcomes of plate fixation (PF) versus intramedullary fixation (IF) for midshaft clavicle fractures.
METHODS: Relevant studies published between January 1990 and October 2014, without language restrictions, were identified in database searches of PubMed®, Medline®, Embase and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Studies that compared postoperative complications and functional outcomes between PF and IF for midshaft clavicle fractures, and provided sufficient data for analysis, we

The floating shoulder is an uncommon but important injury pattern. Although it is frequently defined as an ipsilateral fracture of the clavicle and scapular neck, recent studies suggest that ligament disruption associated with a scapular neck fracture contributes to the functional equivalent of this injury pattern, with or without an associated clavicle fracture. Determining the specific injury patterns indicates the potential for significant instability, and correlating these patterns with clinical outcome is a challenge. Because the degree of ligament disruption is difficult to assess on rad

BACKGROUND: Neer type II/bilateral distal clavicular fracture is an extremely rare injury combination, with few cases having been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper reports a case of polytrauma in a 16-year-old female following a road traffic accident. The radiographs revealed distal fractures of the bilateral clavicles (Neer type II), and an open reduction and internal fixation procedure was performed. Initially, the distal fracture of the right clavicle was fixed with a six-hole hook plate before the fracture of the left clavicle was fixed using a pre-contoured lateral locking plate fo

Injuries to the upper extremity in paediatric and adolescent athletes are increasingly being seen with expanded participation and higher competitive levels of youth sports. Injury patterns are unique to the growing musculoskeletal system and specific to the demands of the involved sport. Shoulder injuries include sternoclavicular joint injury, clavicle fracture, acromioclavicular joint injury, osteolysis of the distal clavicle, little league shoulder, proximal humerus fracture, glenohumeral instability and rotator cuff injury. Elbow injuries include supracondylar fracture, lateral condyle frac

BACKGROUND: The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons multicenter taskforce studying proximal humerus fractures reached no consensus on which outcome measures to include in future studies, and currently no gold standard exists. Knowledge of commonly used outcome measures will allow standardization, enabling more consistent proximal humerus fracture treatment comparison. This study identifies the most commonly reported outcome measures for proximal humerus fracture management in recent literature.
METHODS: A systematic review identified all English-language articles assessing proximal humerus f

INTRODUCTION: Scapular body fractures represent less than 1% of all skeletal fractures. Operative criteria and risk factors for scapular fracture instability are well defined. Non-operative management of scapular body fractures show satisfactory results but with shortening and medialization of the scapular body. The aim of this study is to evaluate if surgical treatment will result in an improved quality of life and shoulder function compared to non-operative treatment on patients suffering from a scapular body fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a total of 381 retrospectively identified sc

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral fractures are commonly encountered injuries. The development of locking plate technology and reverse shoulder arthroplasty may have changed the treatment patterns of these fractures.
METHODS: We used the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System database in New York State to determine the incidence of proximal humeral fractures from 1990 through 2010 and the choice of treatment: closed reduction-internal fixation, open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF), hemiarthroplasty (HA), or total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA).
RESULTS: The population-adjusted inciden

Most of the papers in the literature are on rotator cuff lesions. This paper will deal with a somewhat forgotten part of the shoulder, the joint and the nontendinous structures around the joint. Since 1985, we have performed ultrasound examinations of the shoulder. We have collected many cases and some of them will be performed. The shoulder joint can be partly examined by ultrasound. We can get some information about joint effusions, humeral head cartilage, some part of the labrum, loose bodies, ganglions and fractures around the joint. The acromio-clavicular joint is also part of the examina

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal humerus fracture dislocations can be challenging given the extensive injury to the proximal humeral anatomy and increased risk of devascularization of the humeral head often seen in these injuries. The purpose of this study is to undertake a systematic review of the literature on the functional outcomes, rate of revision, and short- and long-term complications for proximal humerus fracture dislocations treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
METHODS: The PubMed and OVID Embase databases were queried for literature reporting on proximal h

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies on shoulder arthroplasty have usually described small patient populations, and few articles have addressed the survival of shoulder implants. We describe the results of shoulder replacement in the Norwegian population (of 4.7 million) during a 12-year period. Trends in the use of shoulder arthroplasty during the study period were also investigated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 1,531 hemiprostheses (HPs), 69 total shoulder replacements (Neer type TSR), and 225 reversed total shoulder replacement (reversed TSR) operations were reported to the Norwegian Arthropl
