Benign and malignant breast lesions in cytologic preparations can be difficult to distinguish. The authors applied the silver nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) technique to cytologic preparations obtained from surgical specimens to evaluate its diagnostic usefulness in making this distinction. Ascorbate is found in high concentrations in the aqueous, lens and retina of a variety of animal species. Several functions have been proposed for this, including a vital role in aqueous secretion. A 69-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of pyuria and renal dysfunction. Discs of urinary catheter material were exposed to the flow of artificial urine containing cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Within 10 h an adherent biofilm composed of the bacteria and of their exopolysaccharide products had developed on the uncoated catheter material. On the silver-coated catheter material no biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa had developed.

A patient with severe cyclophosphamide cystitis was treated with intravesical silver nitrate instillation to control bleeding. This resulted in apparent reflux and extravasation of the silver nitrate solution with secondary retroperitoneal inflammation. Subsequently, the patient required treatment for a small, fibrotic bladder with persistent reflux. The precautions and recommendations for treatment of such difficult patients are discussed.

Lymph node involvement in cat scratch disease is characterized by a granulomatous lymphadenitis with micro-abscesses. Recently, it has been shown that the possible aetiological agent is a micro-organism which stains with some silver stains. In this study 60 lymph nodes were studied from 60 patients, using a modified Dieterlé's stain. In 40 cases (66%) rod-shaped bacilli with rounded extremities were observed. There have been several reports of perisaccular fibrosis of the endolymphatic sac in some autopsied cases of Meniere's disease. We attempted to initiate perisaccular fibrosis of the sac in guinea pigs by injecting a small amount of 10% silver nitrate solution that cauterizes the tissue readily to produce scar, ie, fibrosis. Initial examination of hematoxylin & eosin-stained tissue from a human brain specimen did not reveal the fungi which were seen in subsequent tissue sections stained with methenamine-silver nitrate. This study investigated the individual and combined toxicity of silver (AgNPs), titanium dioxide (TiO₂NPs), and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO₂NPs) in zebrafish (Danio rerio), with emphasis on acute/chronic mortality, oxidative stress, bioaccumulation, and histopathology.
