Complications when augmenting the posterior maxilla.

The maxillary posterior edentulous region presents a challenge when planning for restoring missing teeth with a dental implant. The available bone in such cases is often not dense and not adequate for the placement of a properly sized implant because of maxillary sinus pneumatization and alveolar bone loss. Maxillary sinus lift is a predictable procedure to provide adequate bone height for the purpose of implant placement. However, complications are encountered during or after the execution of the sinus lift procedure. In this article, the prevention and management of maxillary sinus complicat

Association Between Osteomeatal Complex Variations and Maxillary Sinus Membrane Thickness: A CBCT Study.

INTRODUCTION: Perforation is the most common complication of sinus floor elevation (SFE) surgery, and is closely associated with the thickness of the maxillary sinus membrane. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maxillary sinus membrane thickness and anatomical variations in the osteomeatal complex (OMC). METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography scans were retrospectively analyzed, encompassing 1957 sinuses. Mucosal thickness (MT) and mucosal appearance (MA) were classified as normal, flat thickening, polypoid thickening, or ostium obstruction. Ostium width (OW), infundibulum

Does alveolar ridge preservation reduce the need for sinus floor elevation: A comparative study to spontaneous healing.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of atrophy in the maxillary posterior region, characterized by reduced vertical bone volume, implant placement becomes challenging. Augmentation procedures like sinus lifts are often needed to address insufficient bone volume. This study aims to explore if alveolar ridge preservation, using a bovine bone substitute and a porcine collagen membrane, significantly decreases the need for sinus lifts compared to natural wound healing after tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this comparative clinical study, 40 patients requiring a total of 53 extractions were assigne
