Effect of starting temperature on the repeatability of thermotactile thresholds.

Hand-transmitted vibration has been observed to cause a wide variety of different signs and symptoms of neurological dysfunction. Different tests of tactile sensitivity, encompassing sensations of pressure, vibration, pain and temperature have been employed in the quantification of the sensorineural effects of vibration. However, since the results of such tests are dependent on different variables, and different versions of each test are used in different laboratories, the results are rarely reported in a manner allowing a direct comparison of results between studies. This paper reports on an

Maternal hypothermia during elective caesarean delivery: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing caesarean delivery are at risk of developing unintended perioperative hypothermia, defined as a core temperature <36.0°C. Most previous studies of core temperature in caesarean delivery patients have not been conducted with accurate measurements for the complete perioperative period. Therefore, we conducted a prospective observational study to identify the incidence and duration of pre- and post-operative maternal hypothermia with a high accuracy continuous temperature monitoring system. METHODS: Women ≥18 years old presenting for elective caesarean delivery un

Cardiovascular responses to orthostasis during a simulated 3-day heatwave.

Global warming has caused an increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of summer heatwaves (HWs). Prolonged exposure to hot environ … nitored during 10-min supine and 10-min 60° head-up tilt (HUT). SkBF, indexed using proximal-distal skin temperature gradient (∆TskP-D), was validated using Laser-Doppler Flowmetry (LDF). The HW significantly increased heart rate, cardiac output and SkBF of the leg in supine; HUT increased SkBF of the arm and leg, and significantly affected all cardiovascular vari …

Infrared thermography reveals surface body temperature changes during proestrus and estrus reproductive phases in Gyr heifers (Bos taurus indicus).

Our aim was to evaluate the application of infrared thermography (IRT) to detect body surface temperature variation of body regions during the proestrus and estrus phases of the reproductive cycle of Gyr heifers and investigate environmental factors that could affect these measurements. Fifty-seven heifers were submitted to an ovulation synchronization protocol. This was followed by monitoring the heifers every 12 h over 60 h. Heifers were monitored for rectal and vaginal temperature using a digital thermometer. The surface temperature of the eye, vulva, and muzzle regions were monitored by IR

Assessment of Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer Measurement Sites in Birds.

The standard method of obtaining body temperature in a bird can be a stressful event, making routine evaluations challenging. Twenty-eight privately owned birds in good health were enrolled in the study to compare digital and infrared (IR) temperature readings. Digital thermometer readings in the cloaca were compared with two different IR thermometers, Ototemp (OT) and VetTemp (VT), used at the skin of the cloaca, breast, axillary area and tympanic membrane. The majority of the IR temperature readings were not significantly different from the cloacal digital reading. Additionally, the differen

Advances, shortcomings, and recommendations for wind chill estimation.

This article discusses briefly the advances made and the remaining short-comings in the "new" wind chill charts adopted in the US and Canada in 2001. A number of indicated refinements are proposed, including the use of whole body models in the computations, verification of heat exchange coefficients by human experiments, reconsideration of "calm" wind conditions, reconsideration of frostbite threshold levels, the inclusion of cold-related pain and numbness in the charts, etc. A dynamic numerical model is applied to compare the effects of wind speeds, on the one hand, and air temperatures, on t

Involvement of sensory nerve endings in cold and heat urticaria.

The involvement of sensory nerve endings in acquired cold and heat urticaria was studied in 8 patients. After repeated topical application of capsaicin, the skin was tested for whealing with cold and heat stimuli. Capsaicin pretreatment prevented the urticarial responses for 4-7 days. Since capsaicin is known to induce selective impairment of the chemosensitive nerve endings, the results suggest that these nerve fibers may play an important role in acquired cold and heat urticaria. The possible mechanisms are discussed.

A physiological body-cooling unit for treatment of heat stroke.

The high incidence of heat stroke during the Mecca pilgrimage in hot weather prompted the development of a new method of rapidly cooling hyperpyrexial patients. A cooling bed was devised which achieved a high rate of evaporative cooling by spraying patients with water at 15 degrees C and warm air, which reached the body surface at 30-35 degrees C. The cooling bed also made possible the administration of ancillary treatment both efficiently and hygienically.

Evolutionary importance for the membrane enhancement of the production of vitamin D3 in the skin of poikilothermic animals.

The photoproduction of vitamin D in the skin was essential for the evolutionary development of terrestrial vertebrates. During exposure to sunlight, previtamin D3 formed in the skin is isomerized to vitamin D3 (calciol) by a temperature-dependent process. Since early land vertebrates were poikilothermic, the relatively slow conversion of previtamin D3 to vitamin D3 at ambient temperature put them at serious risk for developing vitamin D deficiency, thus leading to a poorly mineralized skeleton that could have ultimately halted further evolutionary development of vertebrates on land. We evaluat

Respiratory muscles's thermographic analysis in asthmatic youth with and without bronchospasm induced by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermographic pattern of regions of interest (ROI) of respiratory muscles in young asthmatics with and without bro … reater drop in FEV1 observed in individuals with EIB-cr was initially associated with a decrease in skin temperature, with a difference between the nonasthmatics in the abdominal muscle area. It is likely that this decrease in temperature occurred due to a temporary displacement of blood flow to the most used muscle groups, with a decrease in the region of the ski …

The effects of temperature and body size on immunological development and responsiveness in juvenile shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum).

Sturgeon are an important evolutionary taxa of which little is known regarding their responses to environmental factors. Water temperature strongly influences growth in fish; however, its effect on sturgeon immune responses is unknown. The objective of this study was to assess how 2 different temperatures affect immune responses in shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) relevant immune organs such as the meningeal myeloid tissue, spleen, thymus and skin. These responses were studied in 2 different sizes of same age juvenile sturgeon kept at either 11 °C or 20 °C (4 treatment groups), befo

[The effect of a water-cooled vest on heat intolerance in a patient with anhidrosis due to familial amyloidosis of Finnish type].

The patient was a 70-year-old male with familial amyloidosis of Finnish type who complained of heat intolerance due to anhidrosis during outdoor activities in summer. A water-cooled TM-2 vest was tried for this patient to reduce his body heat during exercises. Following the morning activities including jogging in August his body temperature rose up to 38.0 degrees C without wearing the partly frozen vest. However, when he wore it, his temperature rose up to only 37.2 degrees C after the exercises, which was 0.8 degree C lower than when he did not wear the vest. Headache and tachycardia during

Feasibility and Safety of Intraoperative Abdominal Warming During Spinal Surgery in the Prone Position: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia caused by general anesthesia leads to several complications, including shivering, coagulopathy, surgical site infections, and delayed wound healing. Prone positioning for spine surgery severely restricts the available body surface area for warming, complicating intraoperative temperature management. This study investigated a novel approach utilizing the anatomical space beneath the chest and abdomen created by a standard four-point bolster support to maintain intraoperative core body temperature using standard pediatric underbody forced-air war

Biofeedback and relaxation in the treatment of migraine headaches: comparative effectiveness and physiological correlates.

Twenty-seven migraine headache patients were divided into three equal groups which received thermal biofeedback, frontalis EMG biofeedback, … nd maintained that performance as long as six months after training. Examination of the patterns of skin temperature and EMG changes in the three groups over the course of training also points to a relationship between skin temperature control and reduction in migraine headache symptomatology, and suggests that this relationship is worthy of further investigation.
