Social and Support Services Offered by Cleft and Craniofacial Teams: A National Survey and Institutional Experience.

BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary approach to patients with craniofacial abnormalities is the standard of care by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA). The standards of team care, however, do not require provision of social support services beyond access to a social worker. The purpose of this investigation is to study social support services provided by ACPA teams, funding sources for services, and family interest in services. METHODS: A survey was submitted to ACPA cleft and craniofacial team leaders (N = 161), which evaluated the provision of potentially beneficial socia…

Competition between frontoparietal control and default networks supports social working memory and empathy.

An extensive body of literature has indicated that there is increased activity in the frontoparietal control network (FPC) and decreased activity in the default mode network (DMN) during working memory (WM) tasks. The FPC and DMN operate in a competitive relationship during tasks requiring externally directed attention. However, the association between this FPC-DMN competition and performance in social WM tasks has rarely been reported in previous studies. To investigate this question, we measured FPC-DMN connectivity during resting state and two emotional face recognition WM tasks using the 2

Psychological distress, social support and medication adherence in patients with ischemic stroke in the mainland of China.

Stroke research and rehabilitation have traditionally focused on the physical and functional impact of a stroke. Less attention has been given to the psychosocial factors associated with this chronic condition. By the few studies that have specifically focused on psychosocial factors in the context of stroke, poststroke depression is demonstrated to significantly influence stroke outcomes. Associations of stroke with psychological symptoms other than depression have rarely been evaluated. This study was aimed to investigate the changes of psychological stress, social support and medication adh…

Connectedness, social support and internalising emotional and behavioural problems in adolescents displaced by the Chechen conflict.

The study investigated factors associated with internalising emotional and behavioural problems among adolescents displaced during the most recent Chechen conflict. A cross-sectional survey (N=183) examined relationships between social support and connectedness with family, peers and community in relation to internalising problems. Levels of internalising were higher in displaced Chechen youth compared to published norms among non-referred youth in the United States and among Russian children not affected by conflict. Girls demonstrated higher problem scores compared to boys. Significant inver…

Change in stress and social support as predictors of cognitive decline in older adults with and without depression.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between stress, social support, and cognition in geriatric depression is complex. In this study, we sought to examine whether an increase in stressful life events or a decrease in social support would lead to subsequent cognitive decline among older adults with and without depression. METHODS: The sample consisted of 112 depressed and 101 non-depressed older adults who enrolled in the Neurocognitive Outcomes of Depression in the Elderly (NCODE) study. Participants were assessed clinically, agreed to interviews focusing on stressful life events and social support, a…

Gender and anxiety in Nepal: the role of social support, stressful life events, and structural violence.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the world, anxiety disorders are 1.5-2 times more prevalent among women than men but the reasons for this gender disparity remain elusive. Despite frequent attribution to cultural roles of men and women, data regarding gendered risk factors in non-Western settings are scant. AIMS: This study evaluated the role of gender as a moderator (effect modifier) of stressful life events (SLEs) and social support on the risk of anxiety in Nepal. A cross-sectional random sampling design was employed to recruit 316 persons in a rural community. The participants completed the Beck …

The many layers of social support: capturing the voices of young people with spina bifida and their parents.

Young people with physical disabilities experience greater difficulty than their able-bodied peers in many psychosocial domains as they transition toward adulthood. However, firsthand knowledge of the dimensions of social support that young people with physical disabilities find useful during this stage is lacking. This qualitative study involved 50 participants (21 youths with spina bifida and 29 parents) and focused on gaining an insider's perspective on the nature of social support. Building on the work of LaGreca, themes were mapped into four broad support domains: tangible, information, c…

The effect of dyadic intervention on self-efficacy, social support, and depression for men with prostate cancer.

Urinary and sexual dysfunctions are side effects of radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer (PC) that contribute to depression. Despite the effectiveness of support groups at reducing depression in cancer patients, men typically do not participate in them. The purpose of this pilot study was to test the effects of a dyadic intervention (one-to-one support) on social support (Modified Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors), self-efficacy (Stanford Inventory of Cancer Patient Adjustment), and depression (Geriatric Depression Scale). Subjects were randomized to group. Controls (N=15; …

Are abnormal gastrofiberscopic findings related to hostility with poor social support or to negative responses to stress?

Recent studies have highlighted physiological effects of emotional stress presumably leading to gastrointestinal disease. This study examined the effects of stress (hostility) and coping (social support and negative responses to stress) on asymptomatic gastric diseases. We investigated whether gastrofiberscopic findings were related to stress and coping in 269 volunteers without gastrointestinal complaints. These subjects were taking part in primary health care assessments. Analysis of variance found that volunteers with abnormal gastrofibercopic findings (i.e., erosions and/or ulceration) dem…

A social support intervention for parents of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: results of a randomized trial.

Evaluated a 15-month social support intervention for mothers of children with JRA. Five mentors (mothers of young adults who have had JRA since childhood) were linked to mothers of children with JRA ages 2 to 11 for purposes of enhancing specific types of social support and overall mental health. The total number of reported mental health symptoms decreased in the experimental group and remained the same in the control group. The experimental group showed greater improvement on all indices of support relative to the control group. Trends in the data consistently favored the experimental group,…

The effects of social support on women's health during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period.

This review of the literature on social support and its relationship to maternal health indicates that emotional, tangible, and informational support are positively related to mothers' mental and physical health around the time of childbirth. The importance of various types of support changes with the changing needs of women as they move from pregnancy to labor and delivery, and then to the postpartum period. During pregnancy, emotional and tangible support provided by the spouse and others is related to the expectant mother's mental well-being. In addition, informational support in the form o…

Employed cancer survivors develop a peer-support intervention to improve social connections: a participatory design study.

INTRODUCTION: Among the 4.3 million working-age breast cancer survivors in the U.S., employment offers financial stability, purpose, and normalcy. However, many face barriers that hinder workforce participation, including social disconnection. Using a participatory intervention design approach that directly engages survivors, this study aimed to identify root causes of disconnection and prioritize solutions to support psychosocial wellbeing and work retention. METHODS: This study recruited six employed breast cancer survivors for a design team that used the Intervention Design and Analysis Sc
