Use of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of cortical blindness in pregnancy.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be helpful in the assessment of eclampsia and preeclampsia with central nervous system symptomatology such as cortical blindness. We describe a rare case of complete binocular blindness postpartum with no other neurologic deficits, in which MRI abnormalities were undetected on computed tomography. The better soft-tissue discrimination of MRI may visualize important but subtle lesions which ultimately may help to explain the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism in such cases.

The spinal cord in rheumatoid arthritis with clinical myelopathy: a computed myelographic study.

Thirty one patients with suspected myelopathy due to rheumatoid arthritis were examined by plain radiography and 27 had computed myelography. Clinical features and radiological findings were compared. Deformity of the spinal cord could occur in the absence of combined anterior and posterior compression and correlated closely with clinical features only when considered in combination with skeletal and adjacent soft tissue abnormalities. The best surgical results were achieved by transoral odontoidectomy.

The effect of bolus properties on muscle activation patterns and TMJ loading during unilateral chewing.

Mastication is a vital human function and uses an intricate coordination of muscle activation to break down food. Collection of detailed muscle activation patterns is complex and commonly only masseter and anterior temporalis muscle activation are recorded. Chewing is the orofacial task with the highest muscle forces, potentially leading to high temporomandibular joint (TMJ) loading. Increased TMJ loading is often associated with the onset and progression of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Hence, studying TMJ mechanical stress during mastication is a central task. Current TMD self-managemen

Comparison of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography in the diagnosis of upper cervical spinal cord compression.

Because of its ability to visualize soft-tissue structures in greater detail than any previous radiographic modality, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been heralded as one of the greatest advances in recent years. It is particularly well suited in diagnosis of spinal disorders since it can visualize the spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid without intrathecal contrast agents. This is a preliminary report of our experience of NMR examination in 106 patients studied since November 1982 at Case Western Reserve University Hospital. One of the best applications of NMR is for compressive lesions

Diagnostic and prognostic value of (cone-beam) computed tomography in dental sleep medicine for obstructive sleep apnea: a systematic review.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Determine whether cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or computed tomography (CT) measurements of the upper airway, craniofacial structures and soft tissues provide diagnostic or prognostic value for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in dental sleep medicine. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov. Eligible studies until September 2025 included polysomnography or polygraphy confirmed OSA, CBCT- or CT-based measurements, and either PSG/PG-confirmed non-OSA controls, defi

A data-driven approach for real-time soft tissue deformation prediction using nonlinear presurgical simulations.

A method that allows a fast and accurate registration of digital tissue models obtained during preoperative, diagnostic imaging with those captured intraoperatively using lower-fidelity ultrasound imaging techniques is presented. Minimally invasive surgeries are often planned using preoperative, high-fidelity medical imaging techniques such as MRI and CT imaging. While these techniques allow clinicians to obtain detailed 3D models of the surgical region of interest (ROI), various factors such as physical changes to the tissue, changes in the body's configuration, or apparatus used during the s

[18F]FDG PET/CT for the diagnosis of diabetic foot osteomyelitis.

Infected foot ulcers are common complications in diabetic patients and frequently progress to osteomyelitis. [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has emerged as a practical and accurate imaging modality to differentiate between soft tissue infection and diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO). This study describes [18F]FDG PET/CT indications, diagnostic accuracy, imaging protocols, interpretation criteria and pitfalls for the work-up of DFO.

Laryngeal actinomycosis.

Actinomyces odontolyticus, a component of normal human flora, has been implicated in cervicofacial actinomycosis, which most commonly involves the perimandibular soft tissues and is characterized by slowly progressive abscess and sinus tract formation. Actinomycosis has rarely been reported to involve the larynx, and the imaging findings of laryngeal involvement have not been reported. We present a case of laryngeal actinomycosis with findings on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography.

Intraaortic growth of hydatid cysts causing occlusion of the aorta and of both iliac arteries: case report.

A woman who had been operated on previously for a paraspinal hydatid cyst presented with claudication of the lower limbs. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images showed multiple cysts in the soft tissues of the back, retroperitoneum, and lumen of the aorta and iliac arteries. Occlusion of the aorta and iliac arteries by recurrent hydatid cysts after previous surgery was confirmed with angiography and subsequent surgical exploration. The authors present the imaging findings of this unusual manifestation of cystic echinococcosis.

[A case of ureteral polyp prolapsing into bladder in a 3-year-old boy].

A 3-year-old boy was referred to us with a diagnosis of bladder tumor. On cystoscopy, a yellowish-white pedunculated tumor was found at the right trigone and biopsy revealed an inflammatory change. Computed tomographic (CT) scan showed a soft tissue density from the lower ureter to the bladder. Open surgery confirmed a ureteral polyp originating from the lower ureter prolapsing into the bladder, which mimicked bladder tumor. The need of open surgery in such cases is discussed.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the superior vena cava: computed tomography demonstration and review of the literature.

A case is reported of a 79-year-old man with rapid onset of superior vena cava syndrome caused by an epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Contrast-enhanced helical computed tomography showed a soft-tissue mass with punctate calcifications obstructing the superior vena cava and infiltrating adjacent fat. Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a very rare primary mesenchymal tumor of the superior vena cava that often presents with calcifications. It should to be added to the differential diagnosis of tumors of the anterior mediastinum.

Computed tomography in the management of orbital trauma.

Computed tomography (CT scanning) is a valuable aid in the management of orbital trauma because it provides a method of visualizing tissues and objects of many different densities. CT scanning can be used to study orbital fractures in order to suggest the prognosis for improvement of ocular malpositions after surgery. The extent of fractures and the etiology of many soft tissue abnormalities can be determined by this technique. Foreign bodies can be accurately localized so that the approach to their removal can be planned.

Computed tomography of the spinal canal and cord.

Selective cases have been presented to demonstrate the usefulness of computed tomography in disorders of the spine and spinal cord. The osseous structures are more readily demonstrated than the soft tissues. The cord is difficult and inconsistently identified. However, cystic lesions (syringomyelia) may, at times, be demonstrated. The transverse projection of the CT scan is an added benefit in demonstrating bony spinal lesions. The use of metrizamide with faster scanners should improve the usefulness of this technique in evaluating intraspinal lesions.
