Auditory neuropathy with preserved cochlear microphonics and secondary loss of otoacoustic emissions.

Auditory neuropathy is defined as absent or severely distorted auditory brainstem responses with preserved otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonics. This entity can be found in various circumstances including pre-lingual children. An almost universal characteristic reported from adult patients is the ineffectiveness of traditional hearing aids. Adequate management of pre-lingual cases therefore remains an open problem. This paper describes two pre-lingual children whose follow-up data demonstrated a selective loss of the otoacoustic emissions, whereas the cochlear microphonics remained

Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) as a Potential Referral Metric for Adult Cochlear Implant Candidacy Evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate (1) if the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) could be used to identify ears that meet cochlear implant (CI) candidacy beyond the "60/60" referral guidelines and (2) investigate the relationship between SII from patients' own hearing aids (HAs) and SII from optimally fit clinic-stock HAs such that a patient's own HAs can act as a proxy for an optimally fit HA and thus as a referral metric. DESIGN: Prospective study of 23 participants (≥18 years) with bilateral moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss who were CI candidates

Translabyrinthine removal of large acoustic neuromas.

Several surgical approaches to the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal have been developed for the removal of acoustic neuromas. The choice of an approach may be influenced by hearing levels and tumor size. We reviewed the records of the primary translabyrinthine removal of 167 large (> or = 4 cm) acoustic neuromas performed between 1982 and 1990. Patients ranged in age from 15 to 83 years, with a mean of 43 years (male, 49%; female, 51%). Total removal was achieved in 95%. The facial nerve was preserved anatomically intact in 91%. At follow-up (mean, 2.1 yr), facial nerve funct

Logometro®: The psychometric properties of a norm-referenced digital battery for language assessment of Greek-speaking 4-7 years old children.

In educational and clinical settings, few norm-referenced tests have been utilized until now usually focusing on a single or a few language subcomponents, along with very few language rating scales for parents and educators. The need for a comprehensive language assessment tool for preschool and early school years children which could form the basis for valid and reliable screening and diagnostic decisions, led to the development of a new norm-referenced digital tool called Logometro®. The aim of the present study is to describe Logometro® as well as its psychometric characteristics. Logometro

[Dissociations between music and language functions after cerebral resection: A new case of amusia without aphasia].

We present the neuropsychological study of a patient, I.R., who sustained bilateral damage to the temporal lobes and to the right frontal lobe as a result of successive brain surgeries that occurred ten years earlier. The patient is 40 years old and right-handed; she had no special training in music or in language, representing, therefore, the large majority of listeners. Her performance is compared to that of four neurologically intact subjects who are closely matched in terms of education, sex and age. In the present study, we report I.R.'s performance on various tests aiming at assessing he

Auditory brainstem response versus magnetic resonance imaging for the evaluation of asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are compared for the evaluation of patients with asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). MRI with gadolinium administration is the current gold standard for identifying retrocochlear lesions causing asymmetric SNHL. The study seeks to determine the sensitivity and specificity of ABR in screening for possible retrocochlear pathology. Most important among SNHL etiologies are neoplastic lesions such as vestibular schwannomas, cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors, as well as multiple sclerosi
