The use of a faecal preservative and several staining methods, together with formalin ether concentration, were evaluated for the improved diagnosis of intestinal amoebiasis and giardiasis in 1285 patients with diarrhoea or dysentery and from asymptomatic controls. Forty cases of lymphoma were categorized as Burkitt-type lymphoma in a study of fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears. These constituted 14.3% of all cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed between 1974 and 1982. The median age was 22 years in these cases, 81.8% of which had extranodal tumors. The majority of the cells in the smears (59.8% +/- 8.32%) were in the 11 micron to 15 micron size range and 60.3% +/- 10.3% had noncleaved nuclei. Meganeurites have been described by light and electron microscopy in several neuronal lipid storage diseases. In neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), they appear to be less frequent. We present the first combined Golgi-electron microscopy study of a patient with NCL, which shows that the axons from neurons with meganeurites arise from their distal poles. Our results reinforce the assumption that neuronal malfunction in this disorder, as in other neuronal storage diseases, is also due to the presence of such meganeurites in the area of the axon hillock-initial axon segment.

The increasing use of fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid has refocused attention on Hürthle cell lesions. From 2,317 cytologic studies on "cold" nodules, 70 diagnoses of Hürthle cell tumor were made. The acute lesion in Legionnaires' disease pneumonia is an acute fibrinopurulent bronchopneumonia in which the alveoli are filled with many neutrophils and macrophages and abundant fibrin.
