In this retrospective study, experience in status epilepticus (SE) over an 18-month period at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital is reported. Sixty-three episodes in 41 patients were studied. Fifty-one per cent of patients were under 10 years of age. Fifty-one per cent of patients were classified as remote symptomatic, 29% idiopathic, 15% acute symptomatic and 5% febrile. Bolus doses of diazepam were used in 62 of 63 episodes, phenytoin in 18, diazepam infusion in 9, paraldehyde in 12 and phenobarbitone in 9. A 27-year-old man had a 5-year history of a peculiar state characterized by clouded consciousness provoked by ingestion of alcohol. The present study, conducted between January 1975 and June 1983, includes 282 adult patients admitted for status epilepticus (SE) in 2 intensive care units (3.5% of all admissions). Uncontrolled diabetes can result in many neurological and non-neurological complications. It's common for hypoglycemia to present as a seizure; however, in cases of hyperglycemia, especially in the absence of ketones, seizures are uncommon. Here, we present a case of a 75-year-old female with no prior history of epilepsy disorder presenting as focal status epilepticus complicated by Todd's paralysis.
