Brief report: sensory abnormalities as distinguishing symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in young children.

The purpose of this study was to explore the sensory profile of young children with ASD compared to young children with other developmental delays (DD) at first ASD assessment. Results found that young children with ASD had more tactile and taste/smell sensitivities and difficulties with auditory filtering than young children with other DD. Moreover, sensory scores were significantly correlated with stereotyped interests and behaviors. These findings support the hypotheses that young children with ASD show more sensory impairments than young children with other DD and that sensory symptoms are

Sensory Integration Training and Social Sports Games Integrated Intervention for the Occupational Therapy of Children with Autism.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This paper presents a research design for an integrated intervention using sensory integration training fused with social sports games for the treatment of children with autism. This study used a multiple baseline cross-subject design in a single-subject experiment, with structured play as the independent variable and expressive language skills of children with autism spectrum disorders as the dependent variable, with three phases of intervention: baseline, intervention period, and maintenance period. The expressive language ability was examined in terms of both oral expression and gestural ex

Representation of autism in fictional media: A systematic review of media content and its impact on viewer knowledge and understanding of autism.

The way autism is represented in fictional media can impact people's views of autistic people. For example, representations may contribute to negative views of autistic people as being unusual or dangerous, or they may challenge stereotypes and instead highlight the strengths of autistic people. This work aimed to review previous research to understand how autistic people have been represented in fictional media (Part A). It also sought to understand whether viewing fictional portrayals of autism has an impact on people's knowledge of autism and attitudes towards autistic people (Part B). Of 1

Correction approaches and hashtag framing in addressing Mpox misinformation on Instagram.

The rapid spread of health misinformation on social media poses significant challenges to public health crisis. Mpox misinformation has portrayed it as exclusively a sexually transmitted infection, resulting in misperceptions about infection risk and stigmatization of affected groups. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different correction approaches and message framing in reducing misperception and shaping disease-related attitudes, both immediately after exposure and after a 1-day delay. We employed a 2 × 2 design with a control group to test correction approaches (fact-based

Refining the conceptualization and assessment of internalized weight stigma: A mixed methods approach.

Internalized weight stigma has gained increasing attention in empirical studies, though questions remain about the adequacy of existing measures. The current study utilized a mixed methods approach, including a novel semi-structured interview, to revisit the conceptualization of internalized weight stigma and explore in more depth the stereotypes and impacts of weight reported by individuals with high scores on the widely-used Weight Bias Internalization Scale. All participants were interviewed as part of the screening procedures for two clinical trials (Study 1 n = 84, mean age=47.8 years, 83

How do people perceive sexual harassment targeting transgender women, lesbians, and straight cisgender women?

Third-party observers' opinions affect how organizations handle sexual harassment. Prior research has focused on perceptions of sexual harassment targeting straight cisgender women. We examined how targets' sexual orientation and gender identity impact these perceptions. In three preregistered studies, straight cisgender participants imagined a coworker confided that a male colleague had sexually harassed her. The target was a transgender woman, a lesbian woman, or a woman whose sexual orientation and gender identity were unspecified. In Study 1 (N = 428), participants reported believing that

What Can be Done to Reduce the Public Stigma of Gambling Disorder? Lessons from Other Stigmatised Conditions.

Gambling is embedded in Australian cultural history, and perceived as a normal, legitimate leisure activity. Despite this normalisation, people who experience gambling problems are heavily stigmatised which can lead to a variety of harms that extend beyond the individual. The stigma from the general public appears to be based on a stereotype of a typical "problem gambler"-selfish, greedy, impulsive and irresponsible. However, research suggests that people experiencing gambling problems have widely varying characteristics and do not conform to this stereotype. Regardless of whether the stigma i

Neural Dynamics of Autistic Repetitive Behaviors and Fragile X Syndrome: Basal Ganglia Movement Gating and mGluR-Modulated Adaptively Timed Learning.

This article develops the iSTART neural model that proposes how specific imbalances in cognitive, emotional, timing, and motor processes that involve brain regions like prefrontal cortex, temporal cortex, amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and cerebellum may interact together to cause behavioral symptoms of autism. These imbalances include underaroused emotional depression in the amygdala/hypothalamus, learning of hyperspecific recognition categories that help to cause narrowly focused attention in temporal and prefrontal cortices, and breakdowns of adaptively timed motivated attention and m

Tetrabenazine, a vesicular monoamine transporter-2 inhibitor, attenuates morphine-induced hyperlocomotion in mice through alteration of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine turnover in the cerebral cortex.

A single administration with morphine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) induced long-lasting hyperlocomotion in male ICR mice. Pretreatment of mice with a benzoquinolizine derivative tetrabenazine (TBZ; a reversible vesicular monoamine transporter-2 inhibitor) (1 mg/kg, i.p.) for 30 min significantly attenuated the hyperlocomotion induced by morphine, as compared with vehicle (saline)-pretreated mice. No significant change in locomotion was observed in mice pretreated with TBZ (1 mg/kg) alone. Mice treated with TBZ (1 mg/kg) showed an increase in immobility time in a tail suspension test, as compared with sali

Protective and restorative effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Jitai tablet against methamphetamine-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) is a psychostimulant with high abuse liability that affects the monoamine neurotransmitter systems, particularly the dopamine system. Currently there are no effective medications for the treatment of METH abuse to restore METH-induced dopaminergic dysfunction. The Jitai tablet (JTT), a commercial traditional Chinese medicinal preparation, has been shown to modulate the dopaminergic function both in heroin addicts and in morphine-dependent rats. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in a rodent model, whether JTT can protect against METH-induced neurot

Effects of prenatal immune activation on amphetamine-induced addictive behaviors: Contributions from animal models.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal environmental adversities may affect brain development and are associated with increased risk for schizophrenia, an illness with 50% comorbidity with addiction. Maternal immune activation by poly-inosinic-citidilic acid (Poly(I:C)) exposure can promote behavioral alterations consistent with schizophrenia symptoms in rodents. OBJECTIVES: Considering the vulnerability to addiction in patients with schizophrenia, we evaluated the interactions between prenatal Poly(I:C) administration and addiction in two animal models (behavioral sensitization and conditioned place preferenc

Decreased behavioral impairments in an Alzheimer mice model by interfering with TNF-alpha metabolism.

The performance of mice expressing PDAPP (+/+ or +/-) was studied in the Morris place navigation task. Different lines of questions were investigated using PDAPP+/- mice in which the activity of the cytokine Tumor Necrosing Factor alpha (TNFalpha) was attenuated by chronic treatment with anti-TNF or deleting TNFalpha (TNF-/-). Two different categories of behavior were analyzed in adult (6 months) and middle aged (15 months) subjects. Classically, the cognitive performance was assessed from the escape efficacy and quantitative bias toward the training position in a Morris water maze. Second, st

Extracellular dopamine and amphetamine after systemic amphetamine administration: comparison to the behavioral response.

To further delineate amphetamine-dopamine pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationships, we examined extracellular levels of dopamine and amphetamine in caudate-putamen after the s.c. administration of 8 mg/kg amphetamine. In a parallel group of animals, we also assessed caudate-putamen tissue levels of the drug. Extracellular concentrations of the transmitter and the drug exhibited similar temporal profiles, each achieving maximum concentrations within 30 min of drug administration. Tissue levels of amphetamine exhibited a similar, although slightly earlier time to maximum levels. The concent

A dose-response analysis of the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 in guinea pig: comparison with CPP.

The noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, dizocilpine maleate {(+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-cyclohepten-5, 10-imine maleate} [(+)MK-801], has attracted considerable interest because of its potential use as an anticonvulsant and neuroprotectant. However, its cognitive side effects in humans have limited its use in human pharmacotherapy. Although the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 have been documented in mouse, rat, pigeon, and rhesus monkey, there are no available data on its effects in guinea pig. The objective of this study was to conduct a dose-response analys

Effects of dopamine antagonists on neuronal histamine release in the striatum of rats subjected to acute and chronic treatments with methamphetamine.

In this study, we examined the changes in neuronal histamine (HA) release in the rat striatum after acute and repeated administration of methamphetamine (METH). We studied the regulation of METH-induced HA release by dopamine receptors and the relationship between METH-induced HA release and stereotyped behavior. Acute administration of METH (1 mg/kg) significantly increased HA release 60 min later. Pretreatments with the dopamine D2 antagonists sulpiride and haloperidol blocked the METH-induced increase of HA release, whereas pretreatment with a dopamine D1 antagonist, SCH23390, did not. More

Effects of risperidone on phencyclidine-induced behaviors: comparison with haloperidol and ritanserin.

In this study, we investigated whether risperidone, a serotonin-S2A (5-HT2A)/dopamine-D2 (D2)-receptor antagonist, inhibits phencyclidine (PCP)-induced stereotyped behaviors in comparison with haloperidol and ritanserin. Moreover, we also attempted to investigate the effects of these antipsychotics on the contents of dopamine, serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites in rat striatum and frontal cortex. In rats, PCP (5 mg/kg, i.p.) caused hyperlocomotion and stereotyped behaviors, including sniffing, head-weaving, backpedalling and turning. Both resperidone (0.8-2.4 mg/kg, p.o.) and haloperidol (
