OBJECTIVE: To document adverse effects of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use in community-based users attending a medical clinic.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective recruitment, questionnaire-based interview, physical examination and investigations, with follow-up, of people who attended, anonymously, an inner-city hospital clinic established specifically to examine AAS use.
PARTICIPANTS: 58 men, comprising 27 past AAS users, 14 present users and 17 potential users (who formed the control group).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Clinical adverse effects and abnormal laboratory findings.

A 17-year-old female is presented who developed antiepileptic drug hypersensitivity syndrome after treatment with carbamazepine. The initial diagnoses were idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and toxic shock syndrome. The patient was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and intravenous steroids. After a severe climax on days 2-4 she recovered completely and was discharged on the eighth day of hospitalization. Although we do not have direct proof, we believe that these treatment modalities, especially the IVIG, shortened and ameliorated the clinical course of the disease.

Twenty-three patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria and 3 patients with urticaria pigmentosa received a 2-week treatment with daily application of potent topical steroid using plastic occlusion. Seventy per cent of the chronic urticaria patients had a statistically significant, immediate response, which, however, did not last until the final evaluation after 1.5 years. The management of infant bronchiolitis with bronchodilators and steroids is controversial. A literature review on this topic allows to determine the influence of these medications on the first episode of viral bronchiolitis. The effect of alpha and beta adrenergic drugs is undoubtful but it is not possible to anticipate a positive or negative response based on the age of the child nor on a family history of atopic disease. Systemic steroid therapy has no immediate effect but inhaled steroids may be tried during the recovery period to reduce short term morbidity.

The endocrine response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation was reviewed in 94 women undergoing in vitro fertilization during 114 cycles. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the effect of short-term oral contraceptive suppression on the recovery of pituitary gonadotropin function and subsequent controlled ovarian hyperstimulation. During an 18-month period a prospective randomised trial was conducted on 40 selected patients with bacterial corneal ulcers. Two groups were compared: one was treated with antibiotic only and the other with antibiotic plus steroid. Complications were similar in the two groups. No delay in healing rate of the ulcers was seen with the use of topical steroid. Two methods of assessing visual improvement are discussed, but it was not possible to demonstrate a difference in visual outcome between the two groups.

Examined the effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AS) on behavior, baseline heart rate (HR), and stress-induced HR responses. Twenty-four cynomolgus monkeys were assigned to four mixed social groups of both AS and sham control animals.
