A comparison of the effect of triamcinolone ointment and mouthwash with or without zinc on the healing process of aphthous stomatitis lesions.

Background. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common ulcerative diseases of the oral mucosa. Definitive etiology of RAS has not been conclusively established. There is no certain treatment for aphthous stomatitis but some drugs such as steroids are commonly used for the treatment of RAS. Regarding the effect of zinc on the healing process of epithelial layer and cell division, in this research the effect of triamcinolone (with orabase) in combination with a zinc-containing mouthwash and triamcinolone alone on the healing process of RAS lesions was assessed. Methods. The pr…

Hemorrhagic stomatitis in a natural hybrid of Vipera ammodytes × Vipera berus due to inappropriate substrate in terrarium.

A natural hybrid of Vipera ammodytes × Vipera berus was presented having low body weight, seizures and generalized swelling of the cephalic region. Based on the history of the case and clinical examination, hemorrhagic stomatitis of traumatic origin was diagnosed. The snake was kept in a terrarium with wood chips as a substrate, and the material had induced trauma in the oral mucosa which was further complicated with Salmonella Arizonae and Morganella morganii co-infection, abscessation and osteomyelitis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of bacterial infec…

Analysis of the genetic basis of periodic fever with aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome.

PFAPA syndrome is the most common autoinflammatory syndrome in children from Western countries. In spite of its strong familial clustering, its genetic basis and inheritance pattern are still unknown. We performed a comprehensive genetic study on 68 individuals from 14 families. Linkage analysis suggested a susceptibility locus on chromosome 8, but direct molecular sequencing did not support this initial statistical finding. Exome sequencing revealed the absence of any gene that was mutated in all patients. Exhaustive screening of genes involved in other autoinflammatory syndromes or encoding

Ozone exposure causes a decoupling of conductance and photosynthesis: implications for the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance model.

Industrialization has significantly altered atmospheric chemistry by increasing concentrations of chemicals such as nitrogen oxides (NO( x )) and volatile organic carbon, which react in the presence of sunlight to produce tropospheric ozone (O(3)). Ozone is a powerful oxidant that causes both visual and physiological damage to plants, impairing the ability of the plant to control processes like photosynthesis and transpiration. Damage to photosynthesis and stomatal conductance does not always occur at the same rate, which generates a problem when using the Ball-Berry model to predict stomatal

Allergic contact stomatitis to dodecyl gallate? A review of the relevance of positive patch test results to gallates.

Gallic acid esters or gallates are antioxidants used as preservatives in food and cosmetics. Few cases of gallates causing allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) have been reported in the literature. We present a case report of a 42-year-old beauty therapist who presented with a swollen tongue. Patch testing was positive to dodecyl gallate, commonly reported as being present in edible oil and oily foods such as margarine. Our patient avoided foods presumed to contain gallates and at the 6-week review reported a substantial improvement in her tongue symptoms. We reviewed our database and found 16 (7

Occurrence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis only on lining mucosa and its relationship to smoking--a possible hypothesis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common ulcers affecting the oral cavity. Though it is known that RAS affects only the lining (non-keratinized) mucosa sparing the masticatory (keratinized) mucosa and is unlikely to be seen in smokers, no concrete explanations have been put forward. A hypothesis is proposed that the keratin layer blocks the ingress of antigens and prevents the occurrence of RAS on masticatory mucosa. Similarly, combustible products of smoking are known to cause keratinization and therefore have a similar effect on the lining mucosa and inhibit its occurren…

The familial Mediterranean fever gene as a modifier of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenopathy syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenopathy (PFAPA) syndrome is a sporadic disease, characterized by periodic attacks of inflammation. Mutations in the MEFV, the gene associated with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), may lead to subclinical inflammation in asymptomatic carriers and modify the phenotype of some inflammatory diseases. We aimed at investigating the effect of MEFV gene mutations on disease phenotype in PFAPA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The cohort of this ongoing prospective study consisted of 124 children with PFAPA syndrome, followed in a single refe…

A study of the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis using a urea breath test.

AIM: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common, well-known pathogenic agents in the development of peptic ulcers. Some investigators have shown a relationship between H. pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). However, this relationship is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the association between H. pylori and RAS using the urea breath test (UBT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-three patients with RAS and 44 non-RAS controls were evaluated. There were no differences in gender or age in the two groups. The UBT was used to detect H. pylori infection. Da…

A composite index for determining the impact of oral ulcer activity in Behcet's disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Although number, frequency and healing time of oral ulcers and pain are generally used for clinical practice and studies in Behcet's disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), no standardized activity index is currently present to monitor clinical manifestations associated with oral ulcers. The aim of this study was to develop a standardized composite index (CI) to assess oral ulcer activity in BD and RAS. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 121 patients with BD and 45 patients with RAS were included. Sixty-five percentage of BD and 68.9% of RAS patients were in act…

Usefulness of low-level laser for control of painful stomatitis in patients with hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for the control of painful stomatitis in patients with hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD). BACKGROUND DATA: LLLT has been successfully applied to various painful oral mucosal diseases, although there have been few reports on LLLT for HFMD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial, the painful period of HFMD stomatitis was compared between the LLLT group (n=11) and the placebo LLLT one (n=9), which had similar clinical backgrounds. The LLLT parame…

Nitric oxide induces stomatal closure and enhances the adaptive plant responses against drought stress.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a very active molecule involved in many and diverse biological pathways where it has proved to be protective against damages provoked by oxidative stress conditions. In this work, we studied the effect of two NO donors, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine SNP-treated on the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to water stress conditions. After 2 and 3 h of drought, detached wheat leaves pretreated with 150 microM SNP retained up to 15% more water than those pretreated with water or NO(2)(-)/NO(3)(-). The effect of SNP treatment on water retentio

Herpesviruses in tortoises: investigations into virus isolation and the treatment of viral stomatitis in Testudo hermanni and T. graeca.

Various studies were done during a spontaneous outbreak of stomatitis-rhinitis-complex (mouth rot) in a collection of Mediterranean land tortoises (21 Testudo hermanni, Hermann's tortoises, and three Testudo graeca, spur-thighed tortoises) in southern Germany. These studies were intended to help diagnose the causative agent, establish a possible diagnostic method in vivo and provide information on the efficacy of aciclovir and ganciclovir against chelonian herpesviruses. Thirteen T. hermanni and no T. graeca died within a period of 6 weeks following the introduction of one apparently healthy T…

Effects of altered cytoplasmic domains on transport of the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein are transferable to other proteins.

Alterations of the cytoplasmic domain of the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein (G protein) were shown previously to affect transport of the protein from the endoplasmic reticulum, and recent studies have shown that this occurs without detectable effects on G protein folding and trimerization (R. W. Doms et al., J. Cell Biol., in press). Deletions within this domain slowed exit of the mutant proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum, and replacement of this domain with a foreign 12-amino-acid sequence blocked all transport out of the endoplasmic reticulum. To extend these studies, we determ…

Immunogenicity of recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus-vectored vaccines expressing the Machupo virus glycoprotein in different genome positions.

Recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) is a powerful vaccine platform that elicits durable cellular and humoral immune responses. rVSV vaccines have successfully been used for various hemorrhagic fever-causing viruses. Here, we create and evaluate rVSV vaccines for Machupo virus (MACV), a highly pathogenic New World (NW) mammarenavirus that causes Bolivian hemorrhagic fever. VSV genome rearrangements impact attenuation of the viral vector and the immune response to the vaccine. Therefore, in this study, we directly compare the effect of altering the MACV glycoprotein complex (GPC) posit…

Clinical outcomes in adults' subjects with aphthous stomatitis treated with an oral hyaluronic acid-based medical device.

BACKGROUND: Oral mucosal ulcers are quite common in an otherwise healthy population and can determine a real worsening of the quality of life. Conventional therapy is not appropriate since ulcers often recur and, even if not needed, therapy lasting not less than 2-3 weeks carries a high risk of serious side effects. The use of hyaluronic acid applied as an adhesive gel over the lesions seems to have potential in terms of efficacy and the avoidance of side effects. Of course, hyaluronic acid-based formulations show different effects and tolerability. METHODS: In our study, we retrospectively r

Recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein carrying a foot-and-mouth disease virus epitope as a vaccine candidate.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most highly contagious animal diseases. In an effort to overcome the drawbacks of the currently used inactivated foot-and-mouth disease virus vaccine, a novel recombinant protein carrying foot-and-mouth disease virus VP1 GH loop epitope linked to vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein was expressed in a baculovirus system. Its antigenicity was confirmed with ELISA using monoclonal antibody against foot-and-mouth disease virus. Twice immunizations one month apart in field pigs resulted in a significant antibody increase compared to the glutathione S-t…
