Antifouling Properties of Amine-Oxide-Containing Zwitterionic Polymers.

Biofouling due to nonspecific proteins or cells on the material surfaces is a major challenge in a range of applications such as biosensors, medical devices, and implants. Even though poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has become the most widely used stealth material in medical and pharmaceutical products, the number of reported cases of PEG-triggered rare allergic responses continues to increase in the past decades. Herein, a new type of antifouling material poly(amine oxide) (PAO) has been evaluated as an alternative to overcome nonspecific foulant adsorption and impart comparable biocompatibility.

Superhydrophilic and topography-regulatable surface grafting on PEEK to improve cellular affinity.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely used in the preparation of orthopedic implants due to its biological inertness and similar mechanical modulus to natural bone. However, the affinity between biological tissue (bone and soft tissue) and PEEK surface is weak, leading to low osseointegration and an increased risk of inflammation. The situation could be improved by modifying PEEK surface. Surfaces with good hydrophilicity and proper microtopography would promote cellular adhesion and proliferation. This work presented a two-step surface modification method to achieve the effect. Polyacry

Bioactive PEEK: Surface Enrichment of Vitronectin-Derived Adhesive Peptides.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a thermoplastic polymer that has been recently employed for bone tissue engineering as a result of its biocompatibility and mechanical properties being comparable to human bone. PEEK, however, is a bio-inert material and, when implanted, does not interact with the host tissues, resulting in poor integration. In this work, the surfaces of 3D-printed PEEK disks were functionalized with: (i) an adhesive peptide reproducing [351-359] h-Vitronectin sequence (HVP) and (ii) HVP retro-inverted dimer (D2HVP), that combines the bioactivity of the native sequence (HVP) with

Efficient Osteogenic Activity of PEEK Surfaces Achieved by Femtosecond Laser-Hydroxylation.

Poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) is regarded as an attractive orthopedic material because of its good biocompatibility and mechanical properties similar to natural bone. The efficient activation methods for the surfaces of PEEK matrix materials have become a hot research topic. In this study, a method using a femtosecond laser (FSL) followed by hydroxylation was developed to achieve efficient bioactivity. It produces microstructures, amorphous carbon, and grafted -OH groups on the PEEK surface to enhance hydrophilicity and surface energy. Both experimental and simulation results show that our mod

L-ribose specific recognition surface constructed by pillar[5]arene-based host-guest interaction.

In living organisms, chiral molecules have specific chiral conformations that produce different physiological effects. Ribose is one of the components of RNA, which mainly plays a role in regulating biological activity. Inspired by the biological recognition of sugars, functional chiral surfaces for recognizing L-ribose through non-covalent interactions were constructed. In the strategy of this study, a functional chiral gold surface based on host-guest interactions was constructed through the assembly of the host molecule single-function alynyl pillar[5]arene(SAP5) and the guest molecule (S)

Etiology, pathology, and host-impaired immunity in medical implant-associated infections.

Host impaired immunity and pathogens adhesion factors are the key elements in analyzing medical implant-associated infections (MIAI). The infection chances are further influenced by surface properties of implants. This review addresses the medical implant-associated pathogens and summarizes the etiology, pathology, and host-impaired immunity in MIAI. Several bacterial and fungal pathogens have been isolated from MIAI; together, they form cross-kingdom species biofilms and support each other in different ways. The adhesion factors initiate the pathogen's adherence on the implant's surface; howe…

Characteristics of Phospholipid-Immunosuppressant-Antioxidant Mixed Langmuir-Blodgett Films.

Hemocompatibility is one of the major criteria for the successful cardiovascular applicability of novel biomaterials. In this context, monolayers of certain biomolecules can be used to improve surface biocompatibility. To this end, biocoatings incorporating a phospholipid (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DOPC), an immunosuppressant (cyclosporine A, CsA), and an antioxidant material (lauryl gallate, LG) were fabricated by depositing Langmuir films onto gold or mica substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. These LB monolayers were thoroughly characterized by means of quar

Reconciling the Conflict between Optical Transparency and Fouling Resistance with a Nanowrinkled Surface Inspired by Zebrafish's Cornea.

Surface topography has been demonstrated as an effective nonchemical strategy for controlling the fouling resistance of a surface, but its impact on optical transparency remains a barrier to the application of this strategy in optical materials. To reconcile the conflicting effects of surface topography on optical transparency and fouling resistance, here we study the optical properties and antifouling performance of nanowrinkled surfaces inspired by the corneal surface of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Experimental and numerical analyses demonstrate that a good compromise between optical transparen

Depletion attractions drive bacterial capture on both non-fouling and adhesive surfaces, enhancing cell orientation.

Depletion attractions, occurring between surfaces immersed in a polymer solution, drive bacteria adhesion to a variety of surfaces. The latter include the surfaces of non-fouling coatings such as hydrated polyethylene glycol (PEG) layers but also, as demonstrated in this work, surfaces that are bacteria-adhesive, such as that of glass. Employing a flagella free E. coli strain, we demonstrate that cell adhesion on glass is enhanced by dissolved polyethylene oxide (PEO), exhibiting a faster rate and greater numbers of captured cells compared with the slower capture of the same cells on glass fro

Conditions for Shake-Gel Formation: The Relationship between the Size of Poly(Ethylene Oxide) and the Distance between Silica Particles.

Colloidal silica suspensions are widely used in many fields, including environmental restoration, oil drilling, and food and medical industries. To control the rheological property of suspensions, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymers are often used. Under specific conditions, the silica-PEO suspension can create a phenomenon called a shake-gel. Previous works discussed the conditions necessary to form a shake-gel and suggested that the bridging effect of the polymer is one of the important mechanisms for shake-gel formation. However, we noted that the influence of PEO size compared to the separ

Antimicrobial potential and osteoblastic cell growth on electrochemically modified titanium surfaces with nanotubes and selenium or silver incorporation.

Titanium nanotube surfaces containing silver, zinc, and copper have shown antimicrobial effects without decreasing osteoblastic cell growth. In this in-vitro study we present first results on the biological evaluation of surface modifications by incorporating selenium and silver compounds into titanium-dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes by electrochemical deposition. TiO2-nanotubes (TNT) and Phosphate-doped TNT (pTNT) were grown on the surface of Ti6Al4V discs by anodization. Hydroxyapatite (HA), selenium (Se) and silver (Ag) compounds were incorporated by electrochemical deposition. Colony forming unit

Self-Assembly of Size-Controlled m-Pyridine-Urea Oligomers and Their Biomimetic Chloride Ion Channels.

The m-pyridine urea (mPU) oligomer was constructed by using the intramolecular hydrogen bond formed by the pyridine nitrogen atom and the NH of urea and the intermolecular hydrogen bond of the terminal carbonyl group and the NH of urea. Due to the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds, mPU oligomer folds and exhibits strong self-assembly behaviour. Affected by folding, mPU oligomer generates a twisted plane, and one of its important features is that the carbonyl group of the urea group orientates outwards from the twisted plane, while the NHs tend to direct inward. This feature is beneficial to

The effect of a novel pillar surface morphology and material composition demonstrates uniform osseointegration.

Long-term survival of orthopedic implants requires a strong and compliant interface between the implant and surrounding bone. This paper further explores the in-vivo response to a novel, macro-scale osseointegration surface morphology. In this study, we examine the effects of material composition on osseointegration in relation to the controlled surface geometry. The pillared surface is constructed of discontinuous surface geometry which creates an open space for unencumbered bone migration. In creating an open, macro-scale morphology we have demonstrated a bone migration and integration that

Silica-filled methacrylic composites with extremely high compressive strength.

SYLOID® 244 has never been applied as a filler in composites with potential dental application. Therefore, the aim of research was to apply this silica in its unmodified and diazonium salt-modified forms in different mass ratios as fillers in light-cured methacrylic composites. The effectiveness of modification process was confirmed with the use of Raman spectroscopy. Methacrylic composites with the modified and unmodified SYLOID® 244, as well as unfilled resin as a control group were prepared. Their basic physicochemical properties, such as depth of cure, mass stability during incubation in s

Understanding and Characterizing the Drug Sorption to PVC and PE Materials.

Characterizing the sorption of drugs onto polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) materials in terms of thermodynamic adsorption properties and atomistic details (local arrangements, orientation, and diffusion) is fundamental for the development of alternative materials that would limit drug sorption phenomena and plasticizer release. Here, a combination of experiments and sophisticated calculations of potential of mean forces are carried out to investigate the sorption of paracetamol and diazepam to PE and PVC surfaces. The simulated Gibbs free energies of adsorption are in line with th

Titanium surface with nanospikes tunes macrophage polarization to produce inhibitory factors for osteoclastogenesis through nanotopographic cues.

Definitive prevention of inflammatory osteolysis around peri-implant bone tissue remains unestablished. M1 macrophages play a key role in the host defense against inflammatory osteolysis, and their polarization depends on cell shape. Macrophage polarization is controlled by environmental stimuli, particularly physicochemical cues and hence titanium nanosurface might tune macrophage polarization and function. This study determined whether titanium nanosurfaces with anisotropically patterned nanospikes regulates macrophage polarization for inhibiting osteoclast differentiation of osteoclast prec

Bio-inspired surface modification of PEEK through the dual cross-linked hydrogel layers.

The biocompatible high-performance material PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is an attractive implant material, however, its hydrophobicity and high friction coefficients severely hinder its biomedical applications. Thus, it is inferred from the recent advances in surface modification technology, achieving the biomimetic natural joint lubrication systems on PEEK still remains a challenge. In view of the above, herein we proposed a novel two-step strategy to fabricate a "soft (dual cross-linked hydrogel) layer-hard (PEEK) substrate" texture that mimics the structure and function of soft cartilage on
