INTRODUCTION: Mallet finger injuries are common and involve disruption of the terminal extensor mechanism overlying the distal interphalangeal joint. Many operative techniques have been advocated. The pull-in suture technique is a useful surgical procedure for the treatment of mallet finger. Although this procedure allows accurate realignment of the tendon-bone, it has limitations.
PURPOSE: To eliminate these limitations, we present here a modification of the pull-in suture technique.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2008 to October 2009, 10 mallet fingers treated using this modification w

A 14-year-old Quarter Horse had chronic facial swelling and a more recent history of progressive bilateral epiphora. Radiographic findings were compatible with exostosis of the nasofrontal suture. Computed tomography (CT) of the head, including CT dacryorhinocystography, confirmed the diagnosis and allowed presurgical planning of resection of the exostosis, which resulted in resolution of the clinical signs.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the technique and advantages and limitations of spring-assisted cranioplasty for sagittal suture synostosis.
METHODS: Preliminary data are presented of the first 41 patients treated with this technique at our institution.
RESULTS: The cephalic index was 75 after surgery and dropped to 74 one year after surgery. Mean blood loss of both procedures combined was 54 ml.
CONCLUSION: Spring-assisted cranioplasty requires only two small incisions and is at least as effective as other techniques with respect to the cephalic index. Blood loss, operati

PURPOSE: Premature fusion or craniosynostosis of suture(s) of the calvaria is known to result in skull deformation. However, absence of sutures may be interpreted as premature closure of a suture of the calvaria. In the study, the authors investigated skull configuration in skulls found to have isolated absence of the sagittal suture.
METHODS: For this study, 400 adult and child skulls from all of the authors' osteological collections were analyzed.
RESULTS: Of these 400 skulls, three specimens were found to have isolated absence of the sagittal suture (one child and two adults). None of the…

The delay phenomenon is a surgical procedure performed to raise a wider skin flap and to improve the survival of skin flaps. Surgery, chemicals, sutures, and lasers can be used for the delay procedure. In this study, delayed forehead flaps created by suturing were used for coverage of nasal skin defects in eleven patients. In 7 patients, the cross-paramedian forehead flap was used to increase the extent of flap lengthening. In the first session, suture delay was performed on both sides of the forehead flap margin. In the second session, the flap was elevated and sutured to its new position, 7 …

BACKGROUND: A surgical knot is the key feature to assure appropriate wound support while combining tissue edges. Little evidence is available on the in vivo behavior of knots and the evaluation of knots in the living tissue. This study introduces a knot score model, which is defined by microscopic evaluation and the loop-holding capacity.
MATERIALS: In a double-blinded and comparative study, 3 surgeons placed 10 intramuscular single-loop sutures in the longissimus muscle group of the dorsolumbar region at each side parallel to the vertrebral column. For accomplishing the study, 72 rabbits and…

Seventeen patients averaging 51 years of age underwent 23 surgical procedures, including suture suspension for both midface and neck rejuvenations. A 3/0 polypropylene thread with bioabsorbable cones with multiple point fixations in addition to 2 x 0.5-cm polypropylene surgical mesh are used in this technique. The mean postoperative, follow-up time was 9 months. Of the 17 patients, 12 underwent this procedure for midface rejuvenations, 3 for facial palsy, 5 for neck aesthetic procedures, 2 for brow ptosis, and 1 for brow asymmetry. The average number of sutures used for each face was 4 and 2 w…

BACKGROUND: The cause of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis remains elusive. Although compressive forces have been implicated in premature suture … niques and in situ hybridization analysis using bone sialoprotein.
RESULTS: Control group sagittal sutures-which normally remain patent in mice-showed their customary histologic appearance. In contradistinction, sagittal sutures subjected to cyclic loading showed histologic evidence of premature fusion (craniosynostosis). In addition, alkaline phosphatas …

Premature suture obliteration results in an inability of cranial and facial bones to grow, with resulting craniofacial dysmorphology requiring surgical correction. Understanding the biological signaling associated with suture morphogenesis will enable less invasive treatment of patients with fused sutures, combined with therapy using biological molecules. While a number of advances have been made in identifying the genetic etiologies of various craniosynostotic syndromes, the pathogenesis of this condition is still not completely understood. Recently, it has been shown that differential expres…

PURPOSE: Classic literature indicates an infrequency of metopic craniosynostosis (3 to 10 percent) compared to other single-suture craniosyn … nosis of single-suture synostosis. There was an outpacing of sagittal suture involvement over other sutures. Data demonstrate a decrease in unicoronal synostosis and an increase in metopic synostosis (p = 0.011). Geostatistical analysis reveals increasing separation between populations over the study period: 9.8 miles in the first 5 years to 20.8 miles in …

Multiple fixation options exist for coracoclavicular stabilization, but many are technically demanding and require hardware removal. In the study reported here, we reviewed a specific fixation technique that includes suture anchors moored in the base of the coracoid process. We retrospectively reviewed 24 consecutive cases of patients who underwent coracoclavicular stabilization with a suture anchor for a type III or type V acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation or a group II, type II or type V distal clavicle fracture. Eighteen of the 22 patients had full strength and painless range of motio

Various techniques have been described for securing the nail plate back in its anatomic position after trauma or for reconstructive exposure. The figure-of-eight suture technique uses the paronychial folds and notches in the distal aspect of the nail plate to create both ventral and proximal forces to secure the nail plate under the eponychial fold. The transverse figure-of-eight suture prevents the nail from moving distally or dorsally. It is simple, secure, and easily taught to non-hand surgeons. This technique can also be used when the eponychium is damaged. It is a useful adjunct to the ar

PURPOSE: Understanding xenograft rejection is crucial for the potential introduction of xenotransplantation into clinical practice. Small-animal models play an essential role in this context and substantially contribute to our knowledge about mechanisms of xenograft rejection.
METHODS: Rat-to-mouse corneal xenografts were performed by using 2 suturing techniques. Sutures were left either as long or as short as possible to limit the extent of a nonspecific inflammatory response. Cyclosporine A (CsA), monoclonal antibody anti-T cells, and a specific inhibitor of inducible NO synthase (alone or …

Often the necessity is given, that large soft tissue defects of most diverse genesis have to be supplied. Because it means always substantial disadvantages for the person affected, it applies to perform the reconstructions so fast and as carefully as possible. If there is spare tissue needed for the compensation of the defect this has to come from the direct neighbourhood so that the tissue matches in colour and texture with the surrounding skin. This procedure concerns in particular the face, which as communication level of first degree may not be disturbed by repulsive stigmas and defects. F

AIM: The aim of the study was to compare the outcome, complications and costs of three skin suture techniques after Caesarean section.
METHODS: The study sample was 310 women who underwent caesarean section between 2003 and 2007. The sample was divided into three groups: an intradermal suture with non-reabsorbable thread was applied in 98; metallic clips were placed in 90; 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate (2-OCA) glue was used for wound closure in 112. The sutures were checked at 4 days and 2 months after the operation to determine cosmetic outcome, patient compliance, strength of incision closure, alle…
