The significance of hypersensitivity to autologous sweat and serum in cholinergic urticaria: cholinergic urticaria may have different subtypes.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of cholinergic urticaria (ChU) has been unclear except for the involvement of acetylcholine. Attempts to classify ChU according to etiology have rarely been performed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of responsiveness to autologous sweat and serum in ChU in relation to their clinical characteristics. METHODS: This study involved 18 patients diagnosed with ChU between January 2010 and April 2011 in the Catholic Medical Center-St. Paul's Hospital. History taking included symptom duration, association with atopy, decreased sweat secretions, seasonal variatio…

Forkhead transcription factor FoxA1 regulates sweat secretion through Bestrophin 2 anion channel and Na-K-Cl cotransporter 1.

Body temperature is maintained in a narrow range in mammals, primarily controlled by sweating. In humans, the dynamic thermoregulatory organ, comprised of 2-4 million sweat glands distributed over the body, can secrete up to 4 L of sweat per day, thereby making it possible to withstand high temperatures and endure prolonged physical stress (e.g., long-distance running). The genetic basis for sweat gland function, however, is largely unknown. We find that the forkhead transcription factor, FoxA1, is required to generate mouse sweating capacity. Despite continued sweat gland morphogenesis, ablat…

Impairment of calcitonin gene-related peptide-induced potentiation of cholinergic sweat secretion in patients with multiple system atrophy.

Loss of sweating is a characteristic feature of multiple system atrophy (MSA) with autonomic failure, and widespread anhidrosis may lead to hyperthermia and collapse in a hot environment. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is present in the periglandular nerves around sweat glands and is a strong stimulant of methacholine (MCH)-mediated cholinergic sweating. The present study evaluated CGRP-related regulation of cholinergic sweating in patients with MSA. CGRP-induced potentiation of MCH-mediated cholinergic sweating was significantly reduced in MSA patients as compared with normal age-matc…

Calcium-dependent regulation of membrane ion permeability in a cell line derived from the equine sweat gland epithelium.

We measured the rates of 125I- and 86Rb+ efflux from preloaded, cultured equine sweat gland cells. The calcium ionophore ionomycin increased the efflux of both isotopes. Anion efflux was unaffected by Ba2+, but this cation inhibited 86Rb(+)-efflux, suggesting that [Ca2+]i-activated potassium channels were present. Activation of these channels was not, however, important for the efflux of anions. We measured 125I- efflux from valinomycin-depolarised cells in which anion cotransport was inhibited. Changes in 125I- efflux reflect changes in anion permeability under these conditions, and ionomycin…

Mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma of eyelid: a clinicopathologic study of 21 cases with histochemical and electron microscopic observations.

This is a clinicopathologic study of 21 cases of mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma involving the eyelid. The tumor occurred in middle-aged adults (median age 60 years) and has a predilection for males. In this series eight patients (40%) had one or more local recurrences, one of whom died with extensive local invasion of the face after multiple recurrences in a 15-year interval. Only one patient had metastasis to the submandibular lymph nodes, which was treated by radical neck dissection. Involvement of the head, especially the face and scalp, was observed in 78% of the cases from the litera…

Conformal L012-Gold Nanoparticles/Laser-Induced Graphene Interfaces-Based Flexible Electrochemiluminescence Array for Multiplexed Detection of Sweat Metabolites.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) holds promise for wearable multiplexed sweat sensing due to its high sensitivity, broad linear dynamic range, and inherent capacity for parallel signal acquisition through electrochemical-to-optical conversion. However, its advancement has been constrained by the lack of conformal ECL analytical interfaces capable of adapting to deformable skin while maintaining efficient charge transport and stable ECL output. Herein, we developed a conformal ECL analytical interface fabricated via a simple drop-casting strategy, comprising laser-induced graphene (LIG) integrate…

A full-range sweat rate sensor with superhydrophobic heterophase shunt for psychology, skin health and body dehydration evaluating.

Sweat secretion provides insights into physiological and psychological states. However, the current single detection method is not compatible with the simultaneous monitoring of gaseous and liquid sweat, which restricts its application for exploring dynamic physiological processes. Herein, a fully integrated sweat sensor with a heterophase shunt for full-range sweat rate monitoring is reported. Through non-interfering integration of epidermal microfluidic conductivity sensing and humidity detection, continuous measurement across 0.182 ∼ 10 μL/(min·cm2) is achieved. The LiCl-doped UiO-66-NH2 en…

Metal-organic framework-based wearable electrochemical glucose sensors for sweat analysis: materials design, sensing mechanisms, and future perspectives.

The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus has intensified the demand for continuous, reliable, and patient-friendly glucose monitoring technologies. Conventional blood-based glucose testing remains invasive and unsuitable for continuous monitoring, motivating extensive research into non-invasive wearable sensing platforms. Sweat has emerged as an attractive biofluid for glucose monitoring due to its accessibility and compatibility with skin-interfaced devices; however, the low glucose concentration, complex matrix, and dynamic secretion rates pose significant analytical challenges. Metal-orga…

Organic acids enhanced the phototransformation of 1-nitronaphthalene in skin sweat: The critical role of carbon-centered radicals.

Skin contact is an important route for human exposure to atmospheric pollutants. Many atmospheric pollutants possess photochemical activity, and skin sweat provides a natural environment for the photogeneration of reactive species (RSs) from pollutants. However, the photochemical transformation of atmospheric pollutants in skin sweat and their toxicological effects on the skin remain poorly understood. Herein, 1-nitronaphthalene (1-NN), a common atmospheric pollutant, was used as a model compound to investigate the influence of key components (i.e., Organic acids, Fe3 +) of skin sweat on the d…

A skin-interfaced, miniaturized platform for triggered induction, capture and colorimetric multicomponent analysis of microliter volumes of sweat.

Eccrine sweat can serve as a source of biomarkers for assessing physiological health and nutritional balance, for tracking loss of essential species from the body and for evaluating exposure to hazardous substances. The growing interest in this relatively underexplored class of biofluid arises in part from its non-invasive ability for capture and analysis. The simplest devices, and the only ones that are commercially available, exploit soft microfluidic constructs and colorimetric assays with purely passive modes of operation. The most sophisticated platforms exploit batteries, electronic comp…

Real-world data confirm elexacftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor modulators halves sweat chloride concentration in eligible people with cystic fibrosis.

Sweat chloride concentration, a diagnostic feature in cystic fibrosis (CF), reflects CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) activity. CFTR modulator therapies, especially elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), has improved CF outcomes. We report nationwide, real-world data on sweat chloride concentration in people with CF (pwCF) with and without modulator therapies. All Danish pwCF with a minimum of one F508del allele were included. Sweat chloride measurements were stratified by genotype and modulator treatment. Differences were assessed using mixed-effects models. We included 977 swea…

Wearable biosensors for real-time sweat analysis and body motion capture based on stretchable fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators.

Carbon neutrality is a global green energy revolution meaning that the carbon dioxide can make ends meet. However, with the mushroom of the fifth generation wireless systems (5G) and the Internet of Things (IoT), it is a great challenge for powering the ubiquitous distributed devices, because the battery production and high overhead maintenance may bring more carbon emissions. Here, we present wearable biosensors for real-time sweat analysis and body motion capture based on stretchable fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators (F-TENG). The F-TENG is made of stretchable conductive fiber (Ecofle…
